Download or read book My Daddy’S Chair written by Valerie Kalmenson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the real-life experiences of Valerie's eldest son, Sean, who was injured in an automobile accident. Paralyzed from the waist down, the doctors told him he would never be able to walk again. All of Lucas's memories of his father consist of him in a wheelchair. While he has no suspicions about this fact, when he looks around and sees other people living their day-to-day lives in chairs, he can't help but be curious. Wheelchairs, while they are nothing to be afraid of, often raise questions for children that they cannot themselves answer. The bond between father and son is exceptionally beautiful and moving. This book traces that relationship while striving to answer some of the hitherto unanswered questions that Lucas and other children may have about their parents or anyone living with similar handicaps or disabilities.

Download or read book The Visitors written by Patrick O'Keeffe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One warm July night, when thoughts of Ireland are far from James Dwyer's mind, a homeless man with a sunburnt face, who smells like dry wood, comes to the screen door of his Michigan apartment. Walter has two messages. The first is that an old lady is lying in the middle of his street. But when James goes to look there's nobody to be seen. The second, while apparently more ordinary, is ultimately more troubling: a childhood friend wants him to visit. Kevin Lyons, the wayward older son of a neighbouring builder James knew long ago as a boy in Tipperary, now lives in the USA too, and wants to reconnect with his past. But James, who has spent years establishing the foundations of his American life, has put that past behind him. As the day of the visit approaches, James slowly re-examines the mysteries of that time: what happened to Aunt Tess, who went away to become a nurse in Dublin; what Kevin's father was really doing late at night by candlelight in his makeshift office in the yard; what became of Kevin's red-haired sister Una, who young Jimmy fell for in a big way and whether, after all these years, people like Kevin ever really change. The Visitors is a captivating story of the interwoven fates of two families, of the gap between childhood and the adult world, between a river in Ireland (and all that happened there) and another in America, and of the shocking revelations that come with crossing the divide.

Book Synopsis Constraints on Language Acquisition by : Helen Tager-Flusberg
Download or read book Constraints on Language Acquisition written by Helen Tager-Flusberg and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of research most scholars generally agree that language acquisition is a complex and multifaceted process that involves the interaction of innate biologically-based mechanisms devoted to language, other non-linguistic cognitive and social mechanisms, linguistic input, and information about the social and physical world. Theoretical work in the field of language acquisition now needs to focus in greater depth and detail on some specific aspects of this general model, which is the main goal of this book. The chapters in this volume provide some new insights into one of the most remarkable accomplishments achieved by almost all children. The particular questions that are raised by contributors include: * What kinds of constraints operate on the process of language development? * Which aspects of the acquisition process depend on language-specific mechanisms? * Are there critical brain structures necessary for the acquisition of language? * What role do cognitive and social mechanisms play in language development? * How critical is perceptual input about the physical and social world? * What is the specific role played by linguistic input in the child's construction of a linguistic system? Questions are addressed from the perspective of children who come to the task of acquiring language with many hurdles to overcome, including deafness and blindness, mental retardation, autism, and prenatal or perinatal brain damage involving the left hemisphere. Each section contributes some insight on how an innate language-specific biological substrate interacts with cognitive and social factors, as well as external information, to support the child's construction of a linguistic system. Studies of atypical children offer a singular contribution to this enterprise by allowing us to see the specific influences of each component, and in turn, they shed new light on how all children are able to acquire language so effortlessly and during such a brief period of development.
Book Synopsis Little Miss Strange by : Joanna Rose
Download or read book Little Miss Strange written by Joanna Rose and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A girl grows up among Colorado hippies in this “powerful story about coming of age in the 1970s . . . An amazing book” (Richmond Times-Dispatch). Sarajean Henry lives with a Vietnam veteran she accepts as her father. When she comes home, Jimmy might be preparing dinner—or he might be shooting up. Her mother, whoever she was, disappeared long ago. Sarajean scams her way through childhood, surviving on intuition, smoking pot by age ten. Gathering carelessly discarded clues in this rootless world of communal living, drugs, and adults who reject the traditional trappings of adulthood, she slowly attempts to solve the mystery of where she came from—and piece together the identity she’s always longed for. “Sometimes sweet, sometimes frightening, sometimes hauntingly beautiful” (Statesman Journal), this novel offers both an up-close look at a historically tumultuous moment in American culture, and a timeless look at “an oddly ‘normal’ childhood as seen through the eyes of a child who knows nothing else” (Library Journal). “An extraordinarily powerful first novel . . . Sarajean is impossible to forget.” —Kirkus Reviews “Packed with colorful details reminiscent of the dream the era of ‘free love’ left behind.” —Redbook “A wondrous, uncanny book, like few others you will read . . . So assured and accomplished that it seems the work of a seasoned novelist at the peak of her talent.” —The Oregonian “The closest thing to a perfect book that I have read in years.” —The Bellingham Herald
Book Synopsis My Mother's Child by : Stella C. Hatgiannis
Download or read book My Mother's Child written by Stella C. Hatgiannis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hatgiannis draws a verbal picture of life in a bygone era . . . corner candy stores, horse-drawn ice cream wagons, little red tricycles and territorial fights with the neighborhood "kids." She describes her visit to Greece as a six-year-old and her reluctance to admit having a good time. She was quite determined to make "momma" sorry she ever took her away from "daddy." Hatgiannis describes moments of conflict growing up when told that "nice Greek girls don't" . . . go to dances, get valentines, go out with boys and how she tries to prove that "yes, they do!" She re-creates scenes from her early childhood and the metamorphosis that takes place when she becomes the sole wage earner and caretaker of her mother. Her acquaintance with Telly Savalas is a fun read as she shares the excitement generated by this memorable moment in the life of a 'little Greek girl" grown up. Hatgiannis has re-created the past in authentic stories that evoke both tears and laughter. Her creative side depicts her twin brother's thoughts in the womb and her mother's ascent to Heaven . . . Hatgiannis writes from the heart as she shares stories from the life of a "little Greek girl."
