Book Synopsis The Lisbon stock exchange in the twentieth century by : Maria Eugénia Mata
Download or read book The Lisbon stock exchange in the twentieth century written by Maria Eugénia Mata and published by Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra / Coimbra University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses both domestic and foreign readers, and for that reason appears in English. Following the survey of history of the Lisbon Exchange published in 1996 by David Justino, the present text extends that medieval period to the Nineteenth century analysis to the present day. Many other Stock Exchanges in Europe and elsewhere have been studied and published by many authors, but no comparable book for Portugal has existed until the present work. The text is accessible to medium-knowledge readers. In a world of internationalization of corporations and financial institutions it is paramount that they be able to mobilize the capacities of the Capital Market to finance the economy, and to possess a thorough understanding of the role of a Stock Exchange for the efficient working of that market. Portugal is a case of great interest to developing countries, as it was able to re-instate the market after 1974, and with such success that the country joined the European Union in 1986 and the innovative Euronext Group of Stock Exchanges in 2002. The book discloses for the first time a database used to calculate a share index that was developed over three years with the help of the FCT grant PTDC/HIS-HIS/100132/2008, and using a methodology that makes that index comparable to common international indices and compatible with the General Index computed daily by the Exchange.

Presenting a range of multidisciplinary perspectives, this volume investigates the concepts and practices of comparison from the early modern period to the present. Each chapter demonstrates how comparison has helped to drive the seemingly irresistible dynamism of the modern world, exploring how comparatively minded assessors determine their units of analysis, the criteria they select or ignore, and just who it is that makes use of these comparisons—and to what ends.

Book excerpt: Protecting economic competition has become a major objective of government in Western Europe, and competition law has become a central part of economic and legal experience. National competition laws have long helped shape the relationship between government and the economy, and theirinfluence has grown dramatically during the last decade. Competition law has also played a key role in the process of European integration, and is likely to do so in the future. Yet, despite its importance, images of European experience with competition law often remain vague and are sometimesdangerously distorted. This book examines that experience, analysing the dynamics of European competition law systems, revealing their impacts and assessing the political and economic issues they raise.

Book Synopsis The Modernization of the Western World by : John McGrath
Download or read book The Modernization of the Western World written by John McGrath and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering Western history from the ancient world to the current era of globalization, The Modernization of the Western World describes the forces of social change and what they have meant to the lives of the people caught up in them. The volume presents the history of Western civilization from a historical sociology perspective, introducing readers to the analyses of thinkers like Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Adam Smith, Ferdinand Tönnies, and Max Weber, in order to provide tools for understanding how societies function and change. This application of modernization theory argues, not that what has happened in the West should or even must happen in non-Western societies, but that understanding modernization as a process of social change affords a better understanding of why and how life has changed over the past millennium. The interactions of Western and non-Western societies have had a profound effect on each other; this is the story of the development of a truly global economy. This new edition has been updated to include a final chapter which addresses recent developments—economic disturbances in the global marketplace, cyberwarfare, and the rise of populist movements—testing the relevance of classic modernization theory for today. Featuring a glossary, maps and illustrations, boxed features, and an extensive index, this book will be of particular interest to students looking to understand world history as well as those interested in historical sociology and modernization theory.

Book Synopsis Banking and Finance in the Mediterranean by : John A. Consiglio
Download or read book Banking and Finance in the Mediterranean written by John A. Consiglio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a panoramic picture of the many national and international trends and developments, factors, customs, and events that have characterised banking in the Mediterranean area over the past two centuries. During this period banking in the Mediterranean evolved distinct characteristics, several going well beyond the restricted realities of colonial relations. The range of issues covered by the book is extensive and includes both national banking evolution and pan-regional topics. The chapters touch upon various aspects of Iberian, Italian, French, Greek, Maltese, Moroccan, and Ottoman banking history, focusing particularly on issues relating to central banking, numismatics, archival recording, and pan-Mediterranean economic dynamics. The history of certain specific institutions is also considered, including the Imperial Ottoman Bank, The Ionian Bank, The Banque d'Etat du Maroc, and others. Bringing together papers by leading banking and finance historians which were first presented at the European Association for Banking History conference held in Malta in June 2007, this volume offers an invaluable insight towards a wider and more detailed understanding of the roles of banking and finance in Mediterranean economic history. Seen in a context of what has hitherto been something of a historical vacuum in terms of the coverage of much writing on European banking and financial history, and the importance given to the Mediterranean region's banking history in its own right, this is an innovative book that both contributes towards our knowledge the subject, and establishes a pattern for further work in this important area of European economic history.
Book Synopsis The Foundations of Worldwide Economic Integration by : Christof Dejung
Download or read book The Foundations of Worldwide Economic Integration written by Christof Dejung and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume discuss worldwide economic integration between 1850 and 1930, challenging the popular description of the period after 1918 as one of mere deglobalisation. The authors argue that markets were not only places of material exchange, but also socially structured entities, shaped by the agency of individual actors and by complex structures of political and economic power. Economic transactions were supported by an array of different institutions, ranging from formalised regulations to informal relations of personal trust. They argue that these networks were strong enough to prosper even during and after World War I, in a political climate often hostile to foreign trade. The Foundations of Worldwide Economic Integration shows that institutionalism altered its shape in the face of circumstances that increasingly challenged international trade. By presenting case studies from various countries, this book offers a fresh perspective on crucial periods of economic globalisation.
