Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A partial reflection experiment, conducted on Aitutaki, Cook Island, before, during and after the 1965 Solar Eclipse, is described. A small portion of the data collected during the expedition is presented in the form of ten electron density profiles collected between the times of 13 minutes before totality until two and one half hours after totality. Also included is a three day noon-time average electron density profile for comparison purposes. The statistics of D-region echoes are described and their implications are discussed. The general conclusion from the data is that the solar eclipse caused little, or no changes in the electron density distribution at altitudes below 75 km. The predominant eclipse effects were noticed at altitudes of 78 km and higher. The data presented also suggest that the D-region electron density recovered to near normal in a time interval of about 80 minutes after totality. Even though the data analyzed are too few to reach definite conclusions regarding the electron density history during the eclipse, the trends evident from the results are sufficiently well defined to establish the usefulness of the experimental technique for D-region investigation during a solar eclipse. Book Synopsis Physics of Geomagnetic Phenomena by : S. Matsushita
Download or read book Physics of Geomagnetic Phenomena written by S. Matsushita and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Geomagnetic phenomena, Volume I covers the significant advances in geomagnetism and the penetrations into the generation of geomagnetic field phenomena. This volume is composed of three chapters. Chapter I deals briefly with the discovery and developments in geomagnetism, followed by discussions on some fundamental topics of the field, including the aurora and geomagnetic storms. This chapter also considers the instruments, geomagnetic stations, and the correlations between geomagnetic indices. Chapter II describes the magnetic properties of minerals and various processes of acquisition of remanent magnetization. This chapter also provides palaeomagnetic data for the direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field in ancient times. Chapter III explores geomagnetic variations caused by solar flares and eclipses. This book will prove useful to physicists, students in upper atmospheric and space topics, and scientists in allied fields with a background in geomagnetism.

Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

The text also describes the solar system beyond mars, including the major planets; pluto and the icy satellites of the outer planets; the comets and meteors; and the meteorites and asteroids. The inner solar system, including the airless rocky bodies; mars, venus, and earth; and planets and life about other stars, is also encompassed. Mathematicians, chemists, physicists, geologists, astronomers, meteorologists, and biologists will find the book useful.
