Book Synopsis Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors by : Lester J. Layfield
Download or read book Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors written by Lester J. Layfield and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors provides the practicing pathologist with a single reference for describing and illustrating the cytologic features of musculoskeletal tumors. Using fine-needle aspiration (FNA), the approach of this work is encyclopedic: both relatively common and relatively rare lesions are depicted. It is expected that Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors will serve to widen the usage of the FNA technique which can: substantially decrease patient morbidity; lessen the complications that arise due to other biopsy techniques; and shorten the time as well as expense required for diagnosis. The chapters on soft tissue lesions are organized by direction of differentiation. Each chapter documents both the common and uncommon lesions within the tissue group. Summaries of clinical findings are given along with the histopathologic and cytologic description. Key diagnostic points (in tabular form) and a discussion of the differential diagnosis complete each section. The section on skeletal lesions is organized along predominant cell type seen in smears. This approach facilitates grouping of lesions into diagnostically useful categories, allowing the pathologist faced with an unfamiliar lesion to rapidly access the portion of the text most useful for differential diagnosis. Within each chapter, the organization is similar to that within the soft tissue chapters. The introduction discusses technical concerns, limitations of the technique, and a diagnostic approach in both tabular and narrative form. Information on grading of soft tissue sarcomas completes the introduction.
Book Synopsis Recent Concepts in Sarcoma Treatment by : J.R. Ryan
Download or read book Recent Concepts in Sarcoma Treatment written by J.R. Ryan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been significant advances in the treatment of sarcomas in the past several years. Further, different clini cal treatment programs are being advocated in different areas including surgery alone, surgery with preoperative or post operative chemotherapy, surgery with different radiotherapy modalities, with each investigator espousing his own treat ment program. On the other side, there is the question of whether these treatment programs are offering better results or whether the natural history of sarcomas has changed. The International Symposium on Sarcomas was held at Innisbrook Resort, Tarpon Springs, Florida, October 8-10, 1987. This was the first international symposium to date involving all of the disciplines treating sarcomas including pathologists, orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, medical oncologists, pediatric oncologists, and radiation oncol ogists. The Symposium brought together a number of special ists working in the clinical field of sarcomas for a presen tation of their specific treatment programs and their results. The presentations were followed by panel discussions to stimulate educational debate as to the different forms of treatment for sarcomas and to formulate some conformity in control of disease, control of spread, and ultimate function for the patient. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In observing the development of modern scientific knowledge, many indivi duals have expressed concern over the rapid growth of information in various specialized disciplines. Over 100 years ago the first Secretary of the Smith sonian Institution, and more recently Dr. Vannevar Bush while proposing the modern expansion of the National Institutes of Health, both noted prob lems that prevented the proper utilization of information by individuals in medical and related scientific fields. These observations, tagether with con comitant implications of future difficulty, are particularly pertinent to the field of oncology. The rapid evolution of the latter discipline has largely been aided by the incorporation of concepts and methods developed over a long period of time, and drawn from a wide variety of other scientific fields. The large body of discoveries that have contributed to our current understanding of neoplasia, however, cannot be viewed as being made up of equal parts. They bring to mind Claude Bernard's view "des determinismes simples et complexes" in the physiological and biochemical regulation of bod ily functions. He was able to observe that the most important and basic of physiologic processes were destined to be fewer in number than those of less fundamental and more highly specialized purpose. He understood that in the future development of medical science, sturlies of the lauer would occupy much of the time and attention of investigators, and were likely to contribute much to scientific literature.
