Book excerpt: "This book begins with the story of the killing of a number of Assiniboine (Nakoda) Indians by a group of Montana frontiersmen in the Cypress Hills of southern Saskatchewan in 1873. The event is known as the Cypress Hills Massacre. The book uses excerpts from contemporary Montana and Canadian newspapers, archival correspondence and other documents to tell the story. This includes the events of the massacre itself, the formation and subsequent involvement of the Northwest Mounted Police in the arrests of the perpetrators, the extradition trial in Helena, Montana in 1875 and a subsequent trial in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876. Archival material from unpublished correspondence and previously published material has been gathered together to show how the retelling of the story changes through time by both white participants/observers and members of the Carry-the-Kettle Nakoda Nation who are descended from the survivors of the massacre. The archaeological section tells about the history of the location of the massacre site in the 1930s and 1940s (now designated as Cypress Hills National Historic Site), a history of the whiskey trade in the 1860s and 1870s and the archaeological research related to that trade that has taken place to date in Saskatchewan and Alberta, a report on the archaeological work that took place in 1972 at Solomon's Post in the Cypress Hills, and a full report on the work at nearby Farwell's post from 2008 to 2010."--

Book excerpt: "Get them out" was a Canadian government policy to remove Aboriginal Peoples from the Cypress Hills area, according to Nekaneet Band Elder, Gordon Oakes, in this book's foreword. Walter Hildebrandt and Brian Hubner explain why the Cypress Hills - a 2,600 square kilometre plateau straddling the Alberta/Saskatchewan/US border - were an important gathering place for Aboriginal Peoples for thousands of years, and why the Canadian government did not want them there. The Indians and the Métis came because game and lodge pole pine were plentiful. Buffalo abounded and the authors describe all aspects of the buffalo hunt from spiritual preparation to the final kill. Fur traders and wolfers came, too, - mostly from Montana - and with them clashes between the different worlds leading to the 1873 Cypress Hills massacre. That event brought the North-West Mounted Police and led to the building of Fort Walsh in the Hills. It was in the Hills that Chief Sitting Bull and the Dakotas sought refuge after defeating Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn. While the NWMP worked to maintain peace, they also helped disperse Aboriginal Peoples from the area. As a result, today there is only one Indian Reserve in the Cypress Hills area.

For many politicians and developers, "to make something" of the North came to mean thinking of the North as an empty hinterland waiting to be exploited, and today, hydroelectric projects, mining, milling, pulp and paper, and other industries have changed much of the North beyond recognition.One of the first parts of the North to be aggressively industrialized was northern Manitoba. When all of Manitoba was given in 1670 to a group of entrepreneurs, a precedent was set that was replicated throughout the provinceís history. After the province entered confederation in 1870, provincial politicians and business leaders began to look to the northern resources as a new key to the provinceís economic development. Particularly after 1912, they saw resource development in the North as a strategy to expand the provincial economy from its agricultural base. Book excerpt: Settler colonialism in Canada has traditionally been portrayed as a gentler, if not benevolent, colonialism—especially in contrast to the Indian Wars in the United States. This national mythology has penetrated into comparative genocide studies, where Canadian case studies are rarely discussed in edited volumes, genocide journals, or multi-national studies. Indeed, much of the extant literature on genocide in Canada rests at the level of self-justification, whereby authors draw on the U.N Genocide Convention or some other rubric to demonstrate that Canadian genocides are a legitimate topic of scholarly concern. In recent years, however, discussion of genocide in Canada has become more pronounced, particularly in the wake of the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. This volume contributes to this ongoing discourse, providing scholarly analyses of the multiple dimensions or processes of colonial destruction and their aftermaths in Canada. Various acts of genocidal violence are covered, including residential schools, repressive legal or governmental controls, ecological destruction, and disease spread. Additionally, contributors draw comparisons to patterns of colonial destruction in other contexts, examine the ways in which Canada has sought to redress and commemorate colonial harms, and present novel theoretical and conceptual insights on colonial/settler genocides in Canada.
