It was a formula, expressing to some extent the trend of her mind, which was of the rebellious, recalcitrant order. She did not mean by it that she was either so callous or so unreasonable as many of her schoolmates and teachers thought her; only that she was impervious to argument when she happened to desire very greatly her own way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cynthia's Revels: Or, the Fountain of Self-Love Cynthia's Revels, because of its formlessness, complexity, and allegorical nature, probably yields less to the average reader than any other of Jonson's plays. This edition represents an effort to make the play more intelligible, partly by disentangling and analyzing its various elements, and partly by a detailed explanation of its obscurities and allusions. This has not been so dreary a task as one would imagine, to judge from the criticism which has for years been dealt out to this 'comicall satyre.' Swinburne's characterization, for example, of Jonson's 'cyclopean ponderosity of perseverance which hammers through scene after scene at the task of ridicule by anatomy of tedious and preposterous futilities, ' is hardly calculated to bias many toward the play. I have no wish to palliate its faults: its woeful lack of dramatic action, monotonous repetition of absurdities, and absence of artistic unity are all apparent enough. But no true impression of it is derived from a mere enumeration of its imperfections. With all its blemishes, one is yet constantly aware that it is a product of Jonson's maturing powers; and, aside from its literary qualities, it presents, especially to the student, questions of absorbing interest, most of which have hitherto received but little serious attention. What relation does it bear to the Stage-Quarrel, that fiery war fought out on the boards of the common stage? Who are the detractors of Cynthia, and who the culprits upon whom she has visited divine justice? Does the satire of manners, which forms the groundwork of the play, represent a conventional or an original and sincere attack on the foppery of the time? Cinderella's story has been told over and over, but never has it been touched by the kind of magic created by the contributors of this book. Mary Blair painted the original pictures for Walt Disney's incomparable animated film, and here her elegant art is gathered together as a picture book. Cynthia Rylant's stories about hardscrabble lives have won not only awards and honors, but hearts. Who better to take a young girl from the darkness of her garret room to the light and brilliance of a ballroom? Together these two great artists have created something quite astonishing: a Cinderella that is breathtaking, heartrending, and joyous, both for those who are coming to the tale for the very first time, and for those who think they know it well.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shining Way With the advance of civilization, and all the valuable improvements of twenty-two hundred years, that splendid road, built for pedestrians and vehicles, has never been surpassed. Over it the commerce of the empire was borne. That magnificent highway, one Of the marvels Of the centuries, but faintly typifies the beauty, the Splendor, the glory, the undying charm Of the Shining Way of which I am to speak in this book. The prophet Isaiah describes it: And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those; the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. NO lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon; it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there. (isaiah xxxv, 8. Book excerpt: New York Times best-selling author Cynthia Leitich Smith turns to realistic fiction with the thoughtful story of a Native teen navigating the complicated, confusing waters of high school — and first love. When Louise Wolfe’s first real boyfriend mocks and disrespects Native people in front of her, she breaks things off and dumps him over e-mail. It’s her senior year, anyway, and she’d rather spend her time with her family and friends and working on the school newspaper. The editors pair her up with Joey Kairouz, the ambitious new photojournalist, and in no time the paper’s staff find themselves with a major story to cover: the school musical director’s inclusive approach to casting The Wizard of Oz has been provoking backlash in their mostly white, middle-class Kansas town. From the newly formed Parents Against Revisionist Theater to anonymous threats, long-held prejudices are being laid bare and hostilities are spreading against teachers, parents, and students — especially the cast members at the center of the controversy, including Lou’s little brother, who’s playing the Tin Man. As tensions mount at school, so does a romance between Lou and Joey — but as she’s learned, “dating while Native” can be difficult. In trying to protect her own heart, will Lou break Joey’s?

She hires a more homespun chef and adds the preternaturally beautiful Zachary to her wait staff. But with hundreds of new vampires on the rise and Bradley off assuming the powers of Dracula Prime, Zachary soon reveals his true nature -- and a flaming sword -- and they hit the road to staunch the bloodshed before it’s too late. Even if they save the world, will there be time left to salvage Quincie’s soul?

Book excerpt: kira-kira (kee' ra kee' ra): glittering; shining Glittering. That's how Katie Takeshima's sister, Lynn, makes everything seem. The sky is kira-kira because its color is deep but see-through at the same time. The sea is kira-kira for the same reason. And so are people's eyes. When Katie and her family move from a Japanese community in Iowa to the Deep South of Georgia, it's Lynn who explains to her why people stop them on the street to stare. And it's Lynn who, with her special way of viewing the world, teaches Katie to look beyond tomorrow. But when Lynn becomes desperately ill, and the whole family begins to fall apart, it is up to Katie to find a way to remind them all that there is always something glittering -- kira-kira -- in the future. Luminous in its persistence of love and hope, Kira-Kira is Cynthia Kadohata's stunning debut in middle-grade fiction.

Book excerpt: "Brilliantly faceted and extremely funny. . . . While I was reading it, I was making a list of all the people I wanted to send it to, until I realized that I wanted to send it to everyone I know." — Ann Patchett “Improbably charming...will have you chortling and reading lines aloud.” — PEOPLE The internationally bestselling, compulsively readable novel—spiky, sharp, intriguingly dark, and tender—that combines the psychological insight of Sally Rooney with the sharp humor of Nina Stibbe and the emotional resonance of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Martha Friel just turned forty. Once, she worked at Vogue and planned to write a novel. Now, she creates internet content. She used to live in a pied-à-terre in Paris. Now she lives in a gated community in Oxford, the only person she knows without a PhD, a baby or both, in a house she hates but cannot bear to leave. But she must leave, now that her husband Patrick—the kind who cooks, throws her birthday parties, who loves her and has only ever wanted her to be happy—has just moved out. Because there’s something wrong with Martha, and has been for a long time. When she was seventeen, a little bomb went off in her brain and she was never the same. But countless doctors, endless therapy, every kind of drug later, she still doesn’t know what’s wrong, why she spends days unable to get out of bed or alienates both strangers and her loved ones with casually cruel remarks. And she has nowhere to go except her childhood home: a bohemian (dilapidated) townhouse in a romantic (rundown) part of London—to live with her mother, a minorly important sculptor (and major drinker) and her father, a famous poet (though unpublished) and try to survive without the devoted, potty-mouthed sister who made all the chaos bearable back then, and is now too busy or too fed up to deal with her. But maybe, by starting over, Martha will get to write a better ending for herself—and she’ll find out that she’s not quite finished after all.

The journey between the city of Mexico and the coast - the same which Montezuma's footmen traversed three centuries and a-half ago - is now with difficulty performed in fifty hours by a Spanish diligencia. Yet is it pretty much the rate at which Spanish matters generally speed, for, above whatsoever soil her imperial standard waves, its influence is felt like the shade of the deadly upas.
