Book excerpt: Cynthia Ann Parker (c.1825-71) was an Anglo-American who was kidnapped in 1836 aged around 10 by a Comanche war band who had massacred her family's settlement. Adopted by the Comanche, she lived with them for 24 years completely forgetting her previous life and married a chieftan with whom she had three children, including the last free Comanche chief, Quanah Parker. When she was about 34 she was recaptured by the Texas Rangers but spent her remaining 10 years refusing to adjust to white society and, heartbroken by the loss of her family, stopped eating and died of influenza in 1871. This short work published in 1886 draws on the testimonies of those connected with Parker's story and includes four photographic portraits.

Cynthia would then grow up with her captors and live among the Comanche for the next 24 years. Parker was recaptured during the Battle of Pease River in 1860 and would spend the remaining 11 years with various members of her birth family.
