Book excerpt: If you read other guides to bicycling Europe you'll find, between yawns, they are filled with very general practical information and describe routes in a long-winded narrative format, impractical for most cyclists. In addition, most focus on just one region or country. Written by Jerry Soverinsky, the owner of a Chicago-based tour company specializing in European destinations (www.cbttours.com) and former Second City comedy writer, this book differs from its predecessors by featuring (a.) detailed information for planning and riding 7- to 10-day tours in 10 countries, (b.) route descriptions in the form of precise, turn-by-turn "cue sheets" based on notable landmarks, and (c.) details for each tour, including historical overviews of regions, food and lodging accommodations to suit any budget, and up-to-date contact information. Whether you actually make it to Europe to ride or not, this highly-entertaining cycling book is well worth the read.

Book excerpt: "Cycling Europe: Great Day Rides" tells you everything you need to know to take interesting and beautiful self-guided single day cycling rides in Europe while staying in any of over 30 fascinating European cities. Rent a bike locally and head out of town on your adventure on some of the great rides in Europe - without having to move your luggage as you would with point-to-point cycle touring. Whether you are on a general European vacation or even on business in Europe, and want to add some riding beyond the standard city tour -- this book is for you! Ride on these generally flat routes on your rented bike -- maybe even an e-bike. Have your companion join you on the biking, or meet up later in the day while they enjoy these wonderful base cities. Michael Lyon has been cycle touring in Europe each summer for more than 25 years, and is the author of the successful and highly reviewed cycle touring book providing for point-to-point cycle touring: "Cycling Along Europe's Rivers: Bicycle Touring Made Easy and Affordable." "Cycling Europe: Great Day Rides" gives you the information you need for these wonderful day rides: Over 30 base cities and 90 day rides in Europe - with many of these cities possibly already on your vacation literary! Each base city provides up to four suggestions for different day rides without the logistics of carrying your luggage and moving hotels daily. Includes suggestions for using trains or river boats for your return to facilitate longer one-way rides. Cities are all interesting places to stay and enjoy the evenings. Each city provides days of terrific fun and exploration for any non-riders travelling companions. Fantastic routes, mostly flat easy terrain, generally well-marked, and most often along bike trails following Europe's beautiful river network. Much more than city day rides! Where to go, how to get there, where to stay, where to rent bikes, what to bring, when to go, and how to prepare. Over 30 custom maps providing route overviews, color in Kindle format. Note that this book does not provide detailed turn-by-turn directions, but rather route overviews with target cities for navigation, interesting stops, and overnights. Most of these routes are well-marked and with easy navigation, and that is all you need, although more detailed maps and GPS are available for more directions. Stay in amazing, beautiful, and interesting cities as a base while day riding -- some more well-known, and others open for discovery -- plenty to see and do for non-riding companions and for when you are finished riding. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to examine the entire life cycle in the Middle Ages. Drawing on a wide range of secondary and primary material, the book explores the timing and experiences of infancy, childhood, adolescence and youth, adulthood, old age and, finally, death. It discusses attitudes towards ageing, rites of passage, age stereotypes in operation, and the means by which age was used as a form of social control, compelling individuals to work, govern, marry and pay taxes. The wide scope of the study allows contrasts and comparisons to be made across gender, social status and geographical location. It considers whether men and women experienced the ageing process in the same way, and examines the differences that can be discerned between northern and southern Europe. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries suffered famine, warfare, plague and population collapse. This fascinating consideration of the life cycle adds a new dimension to the debate over continuity and change in a period of social and demographic upheaval.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating business cycle turning points is still an important task for economic policy decisions. This study does this for the Austrian economy for the period between 1976 and 2005, using only quarterly national accounts data of Austria, Germany and the euro area. Three different filtering methods are applied: first-order differences, the Hodrick-Prescott filter, and the Baxter-King filter. To all of them, two different methods of determining the business cycle are applied: the ad-hoc determination of the business cycle and a dynamic factor model, taking into account the common variations of Austria, the euro area and the German business cycle movements. The results of both methods are dated by the Bry-Boschan algorithm in order to locate peaks and troughs of the cycle. The results are interpreted and compared to already exiting studies on the euro area and the Austrian business cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to mountainbiking, cycling or walking the GTMC, Grande Traversée du Massif Central, in southern France, from Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne to Montpellier and Sête on the Mediterranean. The GTMC is a long-distance mountain biking trail that crosses the entire Massif Central in France visiting all of the major regions, including the Auvergne with its chain of volcanic puys in the Monts-Dôme and Monts-Dore ranges, the Cézallier plateau and the remote Margeride, home of the French Resistance in the Second World War, the high forested hills of the Cévennes National Park, made famous by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, and finally the dry limestone hills bordering the coastal Mediterranean plain. Much of the route is off-road and uses many Grandes Randonnées, so it also makes an excellent walking route. Just over 700km in length it offers a challenge and a thorough exploration of one of southern France's most beautiful and historically interesting regions. The route is described in 17 stages, with maps for off-road and on-road routes, making it suitable for both expert and novice bikers, with full details of facilities and places of interest en route and other useful data for planning the trip.

Book excerpt: In 2012, Bradley Howard set off on a three month journey which ran roughly 3000 miles across Europe. During his cycle, Bradley visited 9 Countries and 'no-trace' camped 64 times. As if that wasn't enough, he took on the Swiss Alps on the way, which tested him to his limits. Whilst on tour, Brad visited many amazing places, including National Parks such as Hohe Tauern, insanely high dams such as the Grande Dixence, and Fairytale Castles such as Neuschwanstein. Through his trip, Bradley kept a journal, which he has now turned into this book, to share his knowledge and adventures with others. In this book, he gives us his reflections on profound insights that came from his adventure, how he managed to live on a budget whilst being on the road, and how he kept himself fuelled whilst he still maintained his Vegan diet. Along the way, Bradley worked hard to tread in harmony with the environment. So don the spandex, let's go on an adventure!
