Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed the advancement of automated algorithmic trading systems as institutional solutions in the form of autobots, black box or expert advisors. However, little research has been done in this area with sufficient evidence to show the efficiency of these systems. This paper builds an automated trading system which implements an optimized genetic-algorithm neural-network (GANN) model with cybernetic concepts and evaluates the success using a modified value-at-risk (MVaR) framework. The cybernetic engine includes a circular causal feedback control feature and a developed golden-ratio estimator, which can be applied to any form of market data in the development of risk-pricing models. The paper applies the Euro and Yen forex rates as data inputs. It is shown that the technique is useful as a trading and volatility control system for institutions including central bank monetary policy as a risk-minimizing strategy. Furthermore, the results are achieved within a 30-second timeframe for an intra-week trading strategy, offering relatively low latency performance. The results show that risk exposures are reduced by four to five times with a maximum possible success rate of 96%, providing evidence for further research and development in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in algorithmic trading is growing massively – it’s cheaper, faster and better to control than standard trading, it enables you to ‘pre-think’ the market, executing complex math in real time and take the required decisions based on the strategy defined. We are no longer limited by human ‘bandwidth’. The cost alone (estimated at 6 cents per share manual, 1 cent per share algorithmic) is a sufficient driver to power the growth of the industry. According to consultant firm, Aite Group LLC, high frequency trading firms alone account for 73% of all US equity trading volume, despite only representing approximately 2% of the total firms operating in the US markets. Algorithmic trading is becoming the industry lifeblood. But it is a secretive industry with few willing to share the secrets of their success. The book begins with a step-by-step guide to algorithmic trading, demystifying this complex subject and providing readers with a specific and usable algorithmic trading knowledge. It provides background information leading to more advanced work by outlining the current trading algorithms, the basics of their design, what they are, how they work, how they are used, their strengths, their weaknesses, where we are now and where we are going. The book then goes on to demonstrate a selection of detailed algorithms including their implementation in the markets. Using actual algorithms that have been used in live trading readers have access to real time trading functionality and can use the never before seen algorithms to trade their own accounts. The markets are complex adaptive systems exhibiting unpredictable behaviour. As the markets evolve algorithmic designers need to be constantly aware of any changes that may impact their work, so for the more adventurous reader there is also a section on how to design trading algorithms. All examples and algorithms are demonstrated in Excel on the accompanying CD ROM, including actual algorithmic examples which have been used in live trading.

There are many great books out there but this book is targeted at traders that seek inspiration for enhancing their trading methods. More importantly, this book is for anyone interested in trading as I have utilized mainly free software (FxPro Quant and MT4). Hence, anyone can read this book and learn from scratch to actually start trading with greater winning probabilities. Creating winning trading strategies is complex and hence automation is implemented, but maintaining an automated system can be tedious, and thus, my endeavor to build a self-learning and enhancing system otherwise known technically as a cybernetic system. The process in creating this book has really helped me solidify my ideas, and I sincerely hope for you as well.

Book excerpt: In his debut book on trading psychology, Inside the Investor’s Brain, Richard Peterson demonstrated how managing emotions helps top investors outperform. Now, in Trading on Sentiment, he takes you inside the science of crowd psychology and demonstrates that not only do price patterns exist, but the most predictable ones are rooted in our shared human nature. Peterson’s team developed text analysis engines to mine data - topics, beliefs, and emotions - from social media. Based on that data, they put together a market-neutral social media-based hedge fund that beat the S&P 500 by more than twenty-four percent—through the 2008 financial crisis. In this groundbreaking guide, he shows you how they did it and why it worked. Applying algorithms to social media data opened up an unprecedented world of insight into the elusive patterns of investor sentiment driving repeating market moves. Inside, you gain a privileged look at the media content that moves investors, along with time-tested techniques to make the smart moves—even when it doesn’t feel right. This book digs underneath technicals and fundamentals to explain the primary mover of market prices - the global information flow and how investors react to it. It provides the expert guidance you need to develop a competitive edge, manage risk, and overcome our sometimes-flawed human nature. Learn how traders are using sentiment analysis and statistical tools to extract value from media data in order to: Foresee important price moves using an understanding of how investors process news. Make more profitable investment decisions by identifying when prices are trending, when trends are turning, and when sharp market moves are likely to reverse. Use media sentiment to improve value and momentum investing returns. Avoid the pitfalls of unique price patterns found in commodities, currencies, and during speculative bubbles Trading on Sentiment deepens your understanding of markets and supplies you with the tools and techniques to beat global markets— whether they’re going up, down, or sideways.

Book excerpt: How to Develop a Profitable Trading Strategy Why You Should Do the Opposite of What the Majority of Traders are Trying to Do Traders become active in the stock market for no other reason than to collect points, ticks and pips. As much as possible and as fast as possible. Everything else is pastime and useless analysis. Traders therefore need a method, a system that does exactly that: accumulating small profits permanently, which eventually adds up to a considerable plus in the account. For this to happen, the author takes the classic recommendation "cut your losses and let your profits run" under the magnifying glass. In this book, he does the opposite of this well-meaning advice: keep profits as small as possible and choose losses as great as possible. In the second part of the book, he is investigating a strategy that works with this premise. And the historical backtesting gives him right. When traders do the opposite of what the crowd is trying to do, they finally have success! Table of Contents Part 1: Do the Opposite of What the Crowd of Traders is Trying to Do! 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The key to investment success, if there be just one, is theability to remain emotionally detached. That detachment is onlyachieved through confidence. That confidence is only arrived atthrough knowledge. That knowledge is arrived at through thought, study, hard work, and experience. In this book, I will try toimpart the knowledge and experience I have acquired over the lastthirty years." -- Richard Arms from the Introduction to TradingWithout Fear Richard Arms' revolutionary theories have changed the way investorsperceive the market. His expertise in the field of technicalanalysis has had significant impact, evidenced by the fact that hisEquivolume charting system is now part of the most popular stockand futures software, and his Arms Index--also known as theShort-Term Trading Index or TRIN--has become one of the mostimportant technical tools of Wall Street. In Trading Without Fear, Richard Arms shows investors how to makesound investment decisions "without succumbing to those two verypowerful emotions": fear and greed. Learning to control thoseemotions in ourselves--while recognizing them in others--empowersus to capitalize on that knowledge. The result is informedinvestment choices, tempered by caution, and fueled by confidenceand a strong desire to succeed. Arms' cogent examination of leading strategies will enable theaverage investor to master successfully what is widely regarded asone of the most reliable methods of long-term market forecasting:volume analysis. Volume analysis is rooted in a seminal Armstheory--that volume plays as significant a role in understandingthe markets as price movement. And volume is affected by theemotions at work in the marketplace. "The market is very complex. It is pushed one way or the other in varying degrees as a result ofindividual decisions of millions of participants. Some of thosepartici-pants are acting logically and others are actingemotionally...it is the volume which is giving us the real pictureof the emotions in the marketplace. Price tells us what ishappening, but volume tells us how it is happening." Trading Without Fear offers investors a trading discipline within-depth coverage of: * Technical vs. fundamental analysis * Equivolume charting and the importance of the "Power Box" * Ease of Movement and Volume Adjusted Moving Averages with newinformation not available anywhere else * Market tides--VAMA and cycles * The mechanics of buying * Selling short--how and when to do it * Closing out short positions With his succinct analytical skills and unique approach, RichardArms makes sophisticated investment strategies accessible toeveryday, individual investors. Trading Without Fear "Mr. Arms elegantly combines many different aspects of volumeanalysis in this book. Volume is related to stock market breadthvia the Arms Index, and to price via Equivolume charting. VolumeWeighted Moving Averages and the Ease of Movement Indicatorcomplete the picture. If you are interested in how to quantify thedriving force of the market, this book is for you." -- JohnBollinger, CFA, CMT President, Bollinger Capital Management Editor,The Capital Growth Letter "Analysts and traders will acquire confidence and control fearthrough carefully studying and applying the unique insightsavailable in Trading Without Fear. This book sums up much of theinventive genius of Richard Arms, the 1995 winner of the covetedMarket Technicians Award.
