Book excerpt: The cyber security of vital infrastructure and services has become a major concern for countries worldwide. The members of NATO are no exception, and they share a responsibility to help the global community to strengthen its cyber defenses against malicious cyber activity. This book presents 10 papers and 21 specific findings from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) ‘Best Practices in Computer Network Defense (CND): Incident Detection and Response, held in Geneva, Switzerland, in September 2013. The workshop was attended by a multi-disciplinary team of experts from 16 countries and three international institutions. The book identifies the state-of-the-art tools and processes being used for cyber defense and highlights gaps in the technology. It presents the best practice of industry and government for incident detection and response and examines indicators and metrics for progress along the security continuum. This book provides those operators and decision makers whose work it is to strengthen the cyber defenses of the global community with genuine tools and expert advice. Keeping pace and deploying advanced process or technology is only possible when you know what is available. This book shows what is possible and available today for computer network defense and for incident detection and response.

Book excerpt: This textbook presents a proven, mature Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology that has delivered success in a wide range of system and enterprise programs. The authors introduce MBSE as the state of the practice in the vital Systems Engineering discipline that manages complexity and integrates technologies and design approaches to achieve effective, affordable, and balanced system solutions to the needs of a customer organization and its personnel. The book begins with a summary of the background and nature of MBSE. It summarizes the theory behind Object-Oriented Design applied to complex system architectures. It then walks through the phases of the MBSE methodology, using system examples to illustrate key points. Subsequent chapters broaden the application of MBSE in Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), real-time systems, cybersecurity, networked enterprises, system simulations, and prototyping. The vital subject of system and architecture governance completes the discussion. The book features exercises at the end of each chapter intended to help readers/students focus on key points, as well as extensive appendices that furnish additional detail in particular areas. The self-contained text is ideal for students in a range of courses in systems architecture and MBSE as well as for practitioners seeking a highly practical presentation of MBSE principles and techniques.

Book excerpt: "Incentivizing Cybersecurity goes beyond books that simply describe cybersecurity technology or law to provide a coherent and comprehensive explanation of why we are making so little progress in addressing the threat, and it lays out a specific path to address the threat in a new, more effective fashion. The book calls for a new market-based "social contract" between the public and private sectors. Since virtually every aspect of modern life is dependent on these cyber systems, cybersecurity is everybody's issue. It should be required reading for both industry and government leaders, as well as cybersecurity practitioners. The book is a collaborative effort of the Board of Directors of the Internet Security Alliance. Each author is a recognized expert in cybersecurity typically with substantial frontline responsibility for addressing the most sophisticated cyber attackers. Taken together, these authors bring elite-level cybersecurity expertise into one coherent volume"--

Book excerpt: Imagine James Bond meets Sherlock Holmes: Counterterrorism and Cybersecurity is the sequel to Facebook Nation in the Total Information Awareness book series by Newton Lee. The book examines U.S. counterterrorism history, technologies, and strategies from a unique and thought-provoking approach that encompasses personal experiences, investigative journalism, historical and current events, ideas from great thought leaders, and even the make-believe of Hollywood. Demystifying Total Information Awareness, the author expounds on the U.S. intelligence community, artificial intelligence in data mining, social media and privacy, cyber attacks and prevention, causes and cures for terrorism, and longstanding issues of war and peace. The book offers practical advice for businesses, governments, and individuals to better secure the world and protect cyberspace. It quotes U.S. Navy Admiral and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis: “Instead of building walls to create security, we need to build bridges.” The book also provides a glimpse into the future of Plan X and Generation Z, along with an ominous prediction from security advisor Marc Goodman at TEDGlobal 2012: “If you control the code, you control the world.” Counterterrorism and Cybersecurity: Total Information Awareness will keep you up at night but at the same time give you some peace of mind knowing that “our problems are manmade — therefore they can be solved by man [or woman],” as President John F. Kennedy said at the American University commencement in June 1963.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, Fort Hays State University, course: IDS 803, language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to argue that the public-private partnership represents the ultimate solution to protect the national cyber security of the United States against frequent and violent cyber-attacks. The paper will elaborate the importance of the cyber security to the national security of the United States, then assesses the present solitary governmental defense measures, and highlights the loopholes and defects of the current unilateral administrative strategy that does not involve the private sector neither in the decision-making process, nor in the execution phase of the defense strategy. The paper will also highlight the roles of the White House, military and intelligence agencies, and subsequently connect them to the proposed public-private partnership and how this partnership is going to synergize their roles. Consequently, this paper is concerned with the cyber defense strategy of the United States. For the past three decades, the United States has been struggling to formulate that strategy to counter the continuous cyber-attacks and threats, and to protect the national interest of our country. With the constant advance in technology every day, it’s pretty much debatable whether our defense techniques are enough and deterrent. Some may see the recommendations adopted throughout this paper argumentative. However, we all agree that cyberspace will never be fully secure. In the same time, there is much that can be done to acquire new strengths, increase the ability to adapt, and reduce the risk of those threats and attacks.
