Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Leadership is not a "one size fits all" thing. Often, leaders must adapt their style to fit a situation or a specific group. Therefore, it is useful to gain a thorough understanding of the cutting-edge leadership styles. Cutting edge leadership styles are advancements of other leadership style to meet the requirements of a business which becomes more and more speeded up. Four different styles will be analyzed: The situational, charismatic, visionary and supportive leadership style. The situational one focuses on the maturity level of the follower and the leader can decide between four approaches which fit the most to the maturity level. The charismatic leadership style is more or less a nature given talent which cannot be trained. The leader needs to have the talent to deal with people in a very special way to motivate them, especially in critical situations. By practicing the supportive leadership style the leader’s behavior expresses concern for the followers and their individual needs and each follower is considered individually. The visionary leadership style is supposed to transmit energy to the employees by giving them a sense of hope and confidence in achievin a certain vision. But all in all there is no right or wrong leadership style and it needs to fit to the follower, the situation as well as to the leader. Also a good leader varies with many different leadership styles because every situation has its peculiarities and needs handled always differently.

Book excerpt: An examination of theoretical and empirical directions in leadership in business, industry, and government, this collection of symposium papers presents a view of the much-discussed but little-researched charismatic leadership notion. Four major divisions include discussion and summary integrating material, thus providing review, evaluation, and perspective on leadership, along with critiques advanced by participants. A final section presents an overview of the "sharpeners" and "levelers"--those approaches seen as productive in new directions and those seen as probable dead ends in terms of advancing the field. Contributors include Kathryn M. Bartol, D. Anthony Butterfield, John P. Campbell, Fred Dansereau, Jr., McDonald Dumas, Martin G. Evans, William M. Fox, Robert J. House, Charles N. Greene, Steven Kerr, Arlyn J. Melcher, Marshall Sashkin, Chester A. Schriesheim, William E. Scott, Jr., Henry P. Sims, Jr., John E. Stinson, Peter M. Storm, Andrew D. Szilagyi, and William M. Vicars. Book excerpt: The media is saturated with images of leaders as powerful, headstrong individuals, who are certain of their position and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their organizational goals or personal ambitions. In reality, far too often, a leader’s ego gets in the way of sound decision making, adversely affecting the organization and the individuals involved. This insightful book, based on cutting edge research, advances a new model for understanding effective leadership. Nielsen, Marrone and Ferraro advocate the idea of leading with humility, a trait that is rarely discussed and frequently misunderstood. Humble leaders consider their own strengths, weaknesses and motives in making decisions, demonstrating concern for the common good, and exercising their influence for the benefit of all. Leading with Humility offers students and leaders clarity in understanding the connection between leadership and humility, and teaches them how to enhance their own abilities to become better leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Tommy Spaulding shows you how looking inwards--and leading with your heart--can transform your life. In his New York Times bestseller, It’s Not Just Who You Know, world renowned leadership speaker and former CEO of Up with People Tommy Spaulding talked about the power of building genuine and lasting relationships both personally and professionally. In The Heart-Led Leader, Spaulding turns his focus to ourselves--to who we are. Authentic leaders, Spaulding says, live and lead from the heart. The values and principles that guide our lives and shape our ability to lead others is far more important than our title, or our ability to crunch numbers, or the impressive degrees we display on our walls. To effect true transformational change, heart-led leaders draw on the qualities of humility, vulnerability, transparency, empathy and love. Illustrated with stories from his own life, and from some of the exceptional leaders he has met and worked with over the years, Spaulding unpacks what those qualities mean, talks about the 18-inch journey from the head to the heart--from our intellect to our emotions--and shows us how to incorporate them into our careers, into how we manage and lead others, and into how we live our lives. It is a vision of leadership that has the power to transform everything we do, and the lives of everyone we touch.
