Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes how curvature measures can be introduced for certain classes of sets with singularities in Euclidean spaces. Its focus lies on sets with positive reach and some extensions, which include the classical polyconvex sets and piecewise smooth submanifolds as special cases. The measures under consideration form a complete system of certain Euclidean invariants. Techniques of geometric measure theory, in particular, rectifiable currents are applied, and some important integral-geometric formulas are derived. Moreover, an approach to curvatures for a class of fractals is presented, which uses approximation by the rescaled curvature measures of small neighborhoods. The book collects results published during the last few decades in a nearly comprehensive way.

Book excerpt: This collection of contributions originates from the well-established conference series "Fractal Geometry and Stochastics" which brings together researchers from different fields using concepts and methods from fractal geometry. Carefully selected papers from keynote and invited speakers are included, both discussing exciting new trends and results and giving a gentle introduction to some recent developments. The topics covered include Assouad dimensions and their connection to analysis, multifractal properties of functions and measures, renewal theorems in dynamics, dimensions and topology of random discrete structures, self-similar trees, p-hyperbolicity, phase transitions from continuous to discrete scale invariance, scaling limits of stochastic processes, stemi-stable distributions and fractional differential equations, and diffusion limited aggregation. Representing a rich source of ideas and a good starting point for more advanced topics in fractal geometry, the volume will appeal to both established experts and newcomers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central object of this book is the measure of geometric quantities describing N a subset of the Euclidean space (E ,), endowed with its standard scalar product. Let us state precisely what we mean by a geometric quantity. Consider a subset N S of points of the N-dimensional Euclidean space E , endowed with its standard N scalar product. LetG be the group of rigid motions of E . We say that a 0 quantity Q(S) associated toS is geometric with respect toG if the corresponding 0 quantity Q[g(S)] associated to g(S) equals Q(S), for all g?G . For instance, the 0 diameter ofS and the area of the convex hull ofS are quantities geometric with respect toG . But the distance from the origin O to the closest point ofS is not, 0 since it is not invariant under translations ofS. It is important to point out that the property of being geometric depends on the chosen group. For instance, ifG is the 1 N group of projective transformations of E , then the property ofS being a circle is geometric forG but not forG , while the property of being a conic or a straight 0 1 line is geometric for bothG andG . This point of view may be generalized to any 0 1 subsetS of any vector space E endowed with a groupG acting on it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph gives a state-of-the-art and accessible treatment of a new general higher-dimensional theory of complex dimensions, valid for arbitrary bounded subsets of Euclidean spaces, as well as for their natural generalization, relative fractal drums. It provides a significant extension of the existing theory of zeta functions for fractal strings to fractal sets and arbitrary bounded sets in Euclidean spaces of any dimension. Two new classes of fractal zeta functions are introduced, namely, the distance and tube zeta functions of bounded sets, and their key properties are investigated. The theory is developed step-by-step at a slow pace, and every step is well motivated by numerous examples, historical remarks and comments, relating the objects under investigation to other concepts. Special emphasis is placed on the study of complex dimensions of bounded sets and their connections with the notions of Minkowski content and Minkowski measurability, as well as on fractal tube formulas. It is shown for the first time that essential singularities of fractal zeta functions can naturally emerge for various classes of fractal sets and have a significant geometric effect. The theory developed in this book leads naturally to a new definition of fractality, expressed in terms of the existence of underlying geometric oscillations or, equivalently, in terms of the existence of nonreal complex dimensions. The connections to previous extensive work of the first author and his collaborators on geometric zeta functions of fractal strings are clearly explained. Many concepts are discussed for the first time, making the book a rich source of new thoughts and ideas to be developed further. The book contains a large number of open problems and describes many possible directions for further research. The beginning chapters may be used as a part of a course on fractal geometry. The primary readership is aimed at graduate students and researchers working in Fractal Geometry and other related fields, such as Complex Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Geometric Measure Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Analytic Number Theory and the Spectral Theory of Elliptic Differential Operators. The book should be accessible to nonexperts and newcomers to the field.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twenty-six papers survey a cross section of current work in modern geometric measure theory and its applications in the calculus of variations. Presently the field consists of a jumble of new ideas, techniques and intuitive hunches; an exchange of information has been hindered, however, by the characteristic length and complexity of formal research papers in higher-dimensional geometric analysis. This volume provides an easier access to the material, including introductions and summaries of many of the authors' much longer works and a section containing 80 open problems in the field. The papers are aimed at analysts and geometers who may use geometric measure-theoretic techniques, and they require a mathematical sophistication at the level of a second year graduate student. The papers included were presented at the 1984 AMS Summer Research Institute held at Humboldt State University. A major theme of this institute was the introduction and application of multiple-valued function techniques as a basic new tool in geometric analysis, highlighted by Almgren's fundamental paper Deformations and multiple-valued functions. Major new results discussed at the conference included the following: Allard's integrality and regularity theorems for surfaces stationary with respect to general elliptic integrands; Scheffer's first example of a singular solution to the Navier-Stokes equations for a fluid flow with opposing force; and Hutchinson's new definition of the second fundamental form of a general varifold.

Book excerpt: At the summer school in Pisa in September 1996, Luigi Ambrosio and Norman Dancer each gave a course on the geometric problem of evolution of a surface by mean curvature, and degree theory with applications to PDEs respectively. This self-contained presentation accessible to PhD students bridged the gap between standard courses and advanced research on these topics. The resulting book is divided accordingly into 2 parts, and neatly illustrates the 2-way interaction of problems and methods. Each of the courses is augmented and complemented by additional short chapters by other authors describing current research problems and results.

Book excerpt: Geometric measure theory has become increasingly essential to geometry as well as numerous and varied physical applications. The third edition of this leading text/reference introduces the theory, the framework for the study of crystal growth, clusters of soap bubbles, and similar structures involving minimization of energy. Over the past thirty years, this theory has contributed to major advances in geometry and analysis including, for example, the original proof of the positive mass conjecture in cosmology. This third edition of Geometric Measure Theory: A Beginner's Guide presents, for the first time in print, the proofs of the double bubble and the hexagonal honeycomb conjectures. Four new chapters lead the reader through treatments of the Weaire-Phelan counterexample of Kelvin's conjecture, Almgren's optimal isoperimetric inequality, and immiscible fluids and crystals. The abundant illustrations, examples, exercises, and solutions in this book will enhance its reputation as the most accessible introduction to the subject.

Book excerpt: The origins of the harmonic analysis go back to an ingenious idea of Fourier that any reasonable function can be represented as an infinite linear combination of sines and cosines. Today's harmonic analysis incorporates the elements of geometric measure theory, number theory, probability, and has countless applications from data analysis to image recognition and from the study of sound and vibrations to the cutting edge of contemporary physics. The present volume is based on lectures presented at the summer school on Harmonic Analysis. These notes give fresh, concise, and high-level introductions to recent developments in the field, often with new arguments not found elsewhere. The volume will be of use both to graduate students seeking to enter the field and to senior researchers wishing to keep up with current developments.

Book excerpt: Based on the subjects from the Clay Mathematics Institute/Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Workshop titled 'Recent Progress in Dynamics' in September and October 2004, this volume contains surveys and research articles by leading experts in several areas of dynamical systems that have experienced substantial progress. One of the major surveys is on symplectic geometry, which is closely related to classical mechanics and an exciting addition to modern geometry. The survey on local rigidity of group actions gives a broad and up-to-date account of another flourishing subject. Other papers cover hyperbolic, parabolic, and symbolic dynamics as well as ergodic theory. Students and researchers in dynamical systems, geometry, and related areas will find this book fascinating. The book also includes a fifty-page commented problem list that takes the reader beyond the areas covered by the surveys, to inspire and guide further research.
