Book excerpt: Takes an open economy approach to macroeconomics, and includes macro theory at work in Russia, Poland and Bolivia.* a focus throughout the book on the global economy and the international aspects of macroeconomics recognizes that all economies in the world are linked through international markets for goods, services, and capital. Open-economy models are used throughout the book. * the ways that countries differ in their important macroeconomic institutions (such as in the patterns of wage setting) are carefully examined, and then those institutional differences are related to observed differences in macroeconomic performance. * recent advances in macroeconomic theory are covered, particularly regarding the role of expectations; the intertemporal choices of households, firms, and the government; and the modern theory of economic policy, including the problems of time consistency and international policy coordination. * boxed features examine topics of interest including Social Security and Saving, The Central Bank and Politics, Currency Convertibility, The Sacrifice Ratio and the Reagan Disinflation, and Social Development and the Debt Crisis. * each chapter concludes with

Book Synopsis A Course in Modern Macroeconomics by : Pablo Kurlat
Download or read book A Course in Modern Macroeconomics written by Pablo Kurlat and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started as a collection of my teaching notes for the ECON 52 course that I taught at Stanford University. The objective of that course, and of this book, is to introduce students to the ideas and way of thinking of modern macroeconomics in a unified way that is accessible with a moderate amount of maths. Modern macroeconomics emphasizes explicit microeconomic foundations and general equilibrium analysis, combined with various kinds of constraints and market imperfections. When preparing the class I thought none of the existing textbooks conveyed this in a way that I liked, so I prepared my own notes, which then grew into this book. While mostly self-contained, the book is probably most useful to students who are familiar with the basics of multivariable calculus and have taken a calculus-based microeconomics class.
Book Synopsis Advanced Macroeconomics: An Introduction For Undergraduates by : Angus Chi Ho Chu
Download or read book Advanced Macroeconomics: An Introduction For Undergraduates written by Angus Chi Ho Chu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Guido Cozzi (University of St. Gallen, Switzerland)Advanced Macroeconomics covers selected topics in advanced macroeconomics at undergraduate level and bridges the gap between intermediate macroeconomics for undergraduates and advanced macroeconomics for postgraduates. By building on materials in intermediate macroeconomics textbooks and covering the mathematics of some classic dynamic general-equilibrium models, this book will give undergraduate students a firm appreciation of modern developments in macroeconomics. This book examines the implications of government policies (such as fiscal policy, monetary policy and innovation policy) and devotes several chapters to economic growth, covering the ideas for which Paul Romer was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2018.Dynamic general equilibrium is the foundation of modern macroeconomics. Chapter 1 begins with a simple static model to demonstrate the concept of general equilibrium. Chapters 2 to 4 cover the neoclassical growth model, exploring the effects of exogenous changes in technology: an important source of business cycle fluctuations. Chapters 5 to 7 use the neoclassical growth model to explore the effects of fiscal policy instruments such as government spending, labour income tax and capital income tax. Chapter 8 develops a simple New Keynesian model to analyse the effects of monetary policy. Chapter 9 begins the analysis of economic growth by reviewing the Solow growth model. Chapters 10 to 12 present the Ramsey model and introduce different market structures to the model to lay down the foundation of the Romer model. Chapter 13 incorporates an R&D sector into the Ramsey model with a monopolistically competitive market structure to develop the Romer model of endogenous technological change. Chapters 14 to 15 examine the implications of the Romer model. Chapter 16 concludes this book by presenting the Schumpeterian growth model and examining its different implications from the Romer model.

Book Synopsis Macroeconomic Theory by : Fernando de Holanda Barbosa
Download or read book Macroeconomic Theory written by Fernando de Holanda Barbosa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics is the application of economic theory to the study of the economy’s growth, cycle and price-level determination. Macroeconomics takes account of stylized facts observed in the real world and builds theoretical frameworks to explain such facts. Economic growth is a stylized fact of market economies, since England’s nineteenth-century industrial revolution. Until then, poverty was a common good for humanity. Economic growth consists in the persistent, smooth and sustained increase of per-capita income. A market economy shows periods of expanding and contracting economic activity. This phenomenon is the economic cycle. The price of money is the amount of goods bought with one unit of money, in other words, the inverse of the price level. Determination of the price level, or the value of money, is a fascinating subject in a fiat money economy.

Book Synopsis Lectures on Macroeconomics by : Olivier Blanchard
Download or read book Lectures on Macroeconomics written by Olivier Blanchard and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1989-03-21 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of Lectures on Macroeconomics is to characterize and explain fluctuations in output, unemployment and movement in prices. Lectures on Macroeconomics provides the first comprehensive description and evaluation of macroeconomic theory in many years. While the authors' perspective is broad, they clearly state their assessment of what is important and what is not as they present the essence of macroeconomic theory today. The main purpose of Lectures on Macroeconomics is to characterize and explain fluctuations in output, unemployment and movement in prices. The most important fact of modern economic history is persistent long term growth, but as the book makes clear, this growth is far from steady. The authors analyze and explore these fluctuations. Topics include consumption and investment; the Overlapping Generations Model; money; multiple equilibria, bubbles, and stability; the role of nominal rigidities; competitive equilibrium business cycles, nominal rigidities and economic fluctuations, goods, labor and credit markets; and monetary and fiscal policy issues. Each of chapters 2 through 9 discusses models appropriate to the topic. Chapter 10 then draws on the previous chapters, asks which models are the workhorses of macroeconomics, and sets the models out in convenient form. A concluding chapter analyzes the goals of economic policy, monetary policy, fiscal policy, and dynamic inconsistency. Written as a text for graduate students with some background in macroeconomics, statistics, and econometrics, Lectures on Macroeconomics also presents topics in a self contained way that makes it a suitable reference for professional economists.
Book Synopsis Developmental Macroeconomics by : Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira
Download or read book Developmental Macroeconomics written by Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental Macroeconomics: Access to Demand, the Exchange Rate and Growth offers a new approach to development economics and macroeconomics. It is a Keynesian-structuralist approach to economics applied to middle income countries that emphasizes the strategic role of demand in creating investment opportunities that are essential to economic development. It also explores crucial links between short-term full employment and financial stability with medium term growth. While this book emphasizes the central role played by the exchange rate it does not ignore other macroeconomic prices (the interest rate, the inflation rate and the profit rate). It develops a group of concepts and models and blends them together in the model of the tendency to the cyclical overvaluation of the exchange rate in developing countries. According to this model, the exchange rate tends to be chronically overvalued. In so far that this is true the exchange rate ceases to be just a short-term problem to be treated by macroeconomics and becomes central to development economics and should be crucially oriented to manage the exchange rate and keep it competitive at the industrial equilibrium level. The book closes with the presentation of new developmentalism – a national development strategy based on the system of models previously discussed that is both an alternative to old national-developmentalism and to liberal orthodoxy or the Washington consensus.

Book Synopsis Macroeconomics and the Wage Bargain by : Wendy Carlin
Download or read book Macroeconomics and the Wage Bargain written by Wendy Carlin and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1990 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intermediate level textbook concentrates on macroeconomic analysis and is one of the first to focus on imperfectly competitive labour and product markets. The authors present a `new Keynesian' treatment of macroeconomics. Its key characteristic is the use of wage bargaining and price-setting under imperfect competition, making product and labour market assumptions closer to the real world. These features are fully integrated in both closed and open economy analysis. The book provides access both to the important applied work on unemployment, inflation, and external balances, and to the journal literature on major questions of economic policy and performance, especially in Western Europe, available to undergraduates and non-specialists for the first time.
