Book excerpt: This study examines and describes the orientations of two Religious Education curriculum documents, being used for the development of senior secondary courses in Melbourne Catholic schools. These are the Guidelines for Religious Education for Secondary Students in the Archdiocese of Melbourne (Guidelines) (Catholic Education Office, 1984), and the Religion and Society Study Design (VCE Religion units) (VCAB, 1989), which will be part of the Victorian Certificate of Education from 1991. The study shows that these documents have differing intentions and orientations. A case study of 13 Religious Education coordinators in a range of schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne was undertaken. The study showed that respondents were aware of the two differing orientations, but that generally they did not perceive this to be an important issue, either because they believed that they could develop Education in Faith courses from the VCE Religion units, or because they believed that opportunities for personal reflection and growth already exist within these units, or because they believed that they could provide for faith development in other courses and activities. The study shows that these three courses of action are directly linked to the approach in Religious Education taken by the individual respondent.

Book excerpt: Faith-based Identity of Catholic Schools: Curriculum Perspectives examines the relationship between faith-based education and whole curriculum at a time when neoliberal ideologies and market values are having a disproportionate influence on national education policies. Topics addressed include: current challenges and dilemmas faced by Catholic Education leadership; Catholic social teaching and its implications for whole curriculum; the opinions of teachers in Queensland Catholic schools regarding faith-based school identity with particular reference to whole curriculum; an associated comparison of these opinions teachers with those of their USA peers; school identity and Catholic social teaching in Ontario Catholic schools; an action research approach to the integration of Catholic social teaching in Queensland Catholic schools; longitudinal study of the views of pre-service teachers at a Catholic university regarding the purposes and characteristics of Catholic schools. Bringing together professionals and academics from across the world, Faith-based Identity of Catholic Schools: Curriculum Perspectives will inspire Catholic and other faith-based educators to appreciate the importance and potential of the integration of faith-based perspectives such as countercultural Catholic social teaching across the school curriculum in an educationally appropriate manner.

Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to scholarship in the field of religious education. Its aim is simple: to offer a critical perspective on the nature of religious education in the light of contemporary developments in Catholic thinking in catechesis and wider thinking in education. The issues raised in the book will provide ample material for fruitful dialogue and constructive debate in the world of Catholic education. Part One revolves around four historical contexts selected specifically to illuminate contemporary developments in the field. While these historical periods have porous boundaries, they offer a working structure in support of the core claims of the book. Part Two explores the complex genealogy of the relationship between catechesis and Religious Education. Key thematic frames of reference within which the relevant Magisterial documents and associated academic literature are set out and explored chronologically thus allowing for some cross-referencing across the themes: unsurprisingly the range of the issues for debate resists a neat packaging within specific time-frames but does provide a helpful working structure. Part Three proposes that a Spirituality of Communion should underpin the Church's work in catechesis, education and Religious Education. Shared Mission seems to be a satisfactory articulation of the necessary dialogic relationship between both fields and offers a suitable space for both distinction and reciprocity. The revised edition contains an appendix on the Global Compact on Education.
