Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 28 is a collection of papers that deals with enzyme-enzyme interactions, regulation of metabolic reaction pathways, the relevance of intracellular amino acid pool in the regulation of protein metabolism, and the production of superoxide by phagocytic leukocytes. Other papers discuss the regulation of adrenergic receptor function by phosphyrylation, a membrane-bound metallo-endopeptidase (meprin), as well as the covalent modification as a mechanism of marking proteins for degradation. One paper notes that the transfer pathway involving enzyme-enzyme recognition is associated with molecular specificity features over those demanded by the molecular structural constraints of the individual enzyme sites. The Albery and Knowles principle, under certain conditions, shows that intermediary metabolites within a particular pathway exist in states of nearly equal free energy. One paper describes that the amino acid pool size and content are governed by the conditioning of intracellular proteins and the metabolic activity of the cell. The paper also suggests that intracellular pools do not regulate protein metabolism. The collection can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology or physiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, Volume 11 focuses on the biochemical mechanisms and key role of the liver in the homeostasis of blood glucose. This book begins with a discussion of glucokinase that is known to play a key role in glucose uptake by liver, followed by a broad overview of the mechanisms that control both glucose uptake by and release from the liver and enzymes involved in glycogen synthesis and breakdown. The classical enzyme models for allosteric regulatory mechanisms known as the biodegradative threonine deaminase are also elaborated. Other topics include the control of blood cholesterol levels, use of cultured mammalian cells, and studies of mutant cell lines. A model for protein turnover is likewise presented, including other mechanisms for the selective degradation of protein, selective uptake by lysosomes, and possible role of stabilizing factors. This publication concludes with an evaluation of complex regulatory mechanisms proposed for the regulation of photosynthetic carbon assimilation. This volume is recommended for biologists and researchers interested in advances in the general area of cellular regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 22 is a collection of papers that deals with eukaryotic protein synthesis, lysosomal thiol proteinases, and the properties of adenylosuccinate synthetase. Other papers discuss the regulation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, ornithine cycle, and seminal vesicle development and function. One paper investigates the poly ADP-ribosylation of protein, particularly in quantifying synthesis and in the function of the polymer. Another paper observes the construction of a reconstituted cell-free system in which there is for the first time a catalytic use, followed by a recycling of eIF-2. A eukaryotic regulatory factor or eukaryotic recycling factor (eRF) is a prerequisite factor in the in the control of the rate of initiation. One paper reviews the properties, structures, and functions of thiol endopeptidases in mammalian lysosomes and the characteristics of the endogenous inhibitor. Another paper explains the regulatory, kinetic, and genetic aspects of adenylosuccinate synthetase from a variety of systems. One paper discusses the short-term regulation of the carboxylase from animal tissues, with emphasis on the covalent modification of the carboxylase, and its relationship to the allosteric control mechanism. Molecular biologists, general biologists, and microbiologists will find the articles in this collection invaluable.

Book Synopsis Enzyme Catalysis and Control by : Marlene Deluca
Download or read book Enzyme Catalysis and Control written by Marlene Deluca and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 24, Enzyme Catalysis and Control is a compendium of papers that discusses phosphoryl transfer reactions, the role of water on the free energy of hydrolysis of pyrophosphate, and the hormonal actions of vitamin D. Other papers describe the regulation lipid metabolism by a lipid-carrying protein, the GABA, and taurine enzymes in mammalian brain. One paper examines the role of vitamin D in the metabolism of cells, as well as in the whole animal. Upon absorption in the body, the vitamin undergoes various metabolic transformations before interacting with specific receptors, and then inducting the genome in the target tissues to generate biological and hormonal responses. Another paper notes the possibility of a genetic defect in cancer cells that results in the abnormal accumulation of sterol carrier protein (SCP) and cholesterol in vivo; and also in the inability to maintain levels of SCP or cholesterol in vitro. One paper shows that tartrate, or other organic acids, secreted into the medium by the penicillia keeps the pH in an optimal range for acid protease degradation of proteins and glycoproteins. This mechanism helps the fungus to survive in a nutrient environment (which is unbalanced with respect to an optimum C/N ratio and at a pH unfavorable to many bacteria and other life forms). Another paper proposes a model for the modulation of ATP synthetase activities and medium exchange reactions by energy input, substrate concentration, or others that affect the microenvironment of the enzyme under certain conditions. The compendium will prove beneficial to molecular biologists, general biologists, microbiologists, and biochemists.

Book Synopsis Reactive Oxygen Species in Chemistry, Biology, and Medicine by : A. Quintanilha
Download or read book Reactive Oxygen Species in Chemistry, Biology, and Medicine written by A. Quintanilha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Oxygen Radicals in Biological Systems: Recent Progress and New Methods of Study" was held in Braga, Portugal between Sep tember 1 and September 14, 1985, in order to consider the basic chemistry and biochem istry of activated oxygen (both radical and non-radical species) and their effect in biolog ical systems. This book summarizes the main lectures given at this meeting. While there is no attempt to cover all the major topics in the expanding subject of oxidative mechanisms in biology, an effort has been made to provide overviews on some key aspects of this field. The authors have attempted to convey a clear picture of both what is known and what remains unclear in their respective subjects. Not only are some of the techniques used for detecting activated oxygen species described, but also their strengths and limi tations. The chemistry of many of these species is discussed and the biological and/or pathological implications are carefully reviewed. The medical and therapeutic aspects of some of the well established pathways of damage and protection are analyzed. It is our hope that the material included in this book might be useful for both researchers and teachers at the graduate level. The success of this meeting was to a large extent due to the tireless committment of Professor Alberto Amaral and Dr. Concei~a:o Rangel; without their outstanding efforts in dealing with all the aspects of the organization, this summer school would not have been possible.
