Book excerpt: HYDRAULIC FLUID POWER LEARN MORE ABOUT HYDRAULIC TECHNOLOGY IN HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS DESIGN WITH THIS COMPREHENSIVE RESOURCE Hydraulic Fluid Power provides readers with an original approach to hydraulic technology education that focuses on the design of complete hydraulic systems. Accomplished authors and researchers Andrea Vacca and Germano Franzoni begin by describing the foundational principles of hydraulics and the basic physical components of hydraulics systems. They go on to walk readers through the most practical and useful system concepts for controlling hydraulic functions in modern, state-of-the-art systems. Written in an approachable and accessible style, the book’s concepts are classified, analyzed, presented, and compared on a system level. The book also provides readers with the basic and advanced tools required to understand how hydraulic circuit design affects the operation of the equipment in which it’s found, focusing on the energy performance and control features of each design architecture. Readers will also learn how to choose the best design solution for any application. Readers of Hydraulic Fluid Power will benefit from: Approaching hydraulic fluid power concepts from an “outside-in” perspective, emphasizing a problem-solving orientation Abundant numerical examples and end-of-chapter problems designed to aid the reader in learning and retaining the material A balance between academic and practical content derived from the authors’ experience in both academia and industry Strong coverage of the fundamentals of hydraulic systems, including the equations and properties of hydraulic fluids Hydraulic Fluid Power is perfect for undergraduate and graduate students of mechanical, agricultural, and aerospace engineering, as well as engineers designing hydraulic components, mobile machineries, or industrial systems.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulic Power Engineering: A Practical Manual on the Concentration and Transmission of Power by Hydraulic Machinery This work may be regarded as a successor to a smaller volume by the same Author on "Hydraulic Machinery," published in 1891, which he prepared with a view to the assistance of engineering students and others who might be practically interested in the subject. In the present volume an attempt is made to give an outline discussion and description of the main points and principles requiring attention by engineers having the responsibility of designing or constructing works and appliances for the utilisation of water for the transmission of power. It would be impossible in any single volume to deal adequately or comprehensively with the many problems arising in the different sections into which the very large subject of Hydraulics and Hydraulic Engineering naturally divides itself. The Author, therefore, has contented himself with giving examples which have special reference to the particular sections in which they occur; and in addition, he has endeavoured to lead up to the general subject by a brief examination of the principles underlying the whole study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulic Machinery: With an Introduction to Hydraulics In books of this class an attempt is usually made to avoid using the calculus, or to disguise its use in the language of so-called elementary mathematics this course is not altogether free from objections, the proofs given being usually long, difficult, and not too exact. The present work is the result of a suggestion by Professor Perry, F whose treatment of the theoretical portions of the subject I have followed; and I venture to think that, although in some cases it has seemed necessary to make use of elementary applications of the calculus, the proofs are simple, easy, and satisfactory. The student who does not possess the small amount of knowledge necessary to follow the reasoning, had better accept the results without proof than attempt to master those often given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulic Machinery, Past and Present: A Lecture Delivered to the London and Suburban Railway Officials' Association, on the 10th January, 1880 We do o not Often hear of Persia producing anything novel, but in this case a decided immovement on the last example is attributed to that nation. The fixed boxes or buckets have the disadvantage of discharging part Of their contents before they quite reach the top, and so waste some of the water 3 in the Persian wheel the buckets are hung on pivots, and overturned into a trough on reaching the top by striking against a projecting pin. In connection with these wheels it is interesting to note, firstly, the defect common to them all, of lifting the water at the outer end Of the arms, and therefore in the position to require the greatest expenditure of power 3 and, secondly, the improvement introduced by a French philosopher, M. De la Faye, about 150 years ago, solely from geometrical reasoning. He designed a wheel with hollow curved arms between two discs, the curves being Of the shape known as involute. This is shown in the next diagram (fig. In this arrangement, as the wheel revolves, the water ows up the arms, remaining nearly under the centre, until lifted to the axle through which it ows, as in the tympanum. The effect Of adverse leverage is thus entirely obviated, and a great saving in power effected. Still better than this was the invention Of Wirtz, a Swiss pewterer, in 1746, who by making one continuous spiral, taking in air and water at each revolution, was enabled to raise the water to a great height, in one case 74 feet. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in two volumes. In this first volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Turbines, Analysis and Design Hydraulic Pumps Hydraulic Elements, Dynamic Characterization and Hydraulic Behaviour Cavitation and Sand Erosion In the second volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Transients and Control Systems Related to Hydraulic Machinery and Plants Oscillatory and Vibration Problems in Hydraulic Machinery and Power Stations Experimental Investigations related to Hydraulic Machinery and its Applications Practical Applications of the Hydraulic Machinery Monitoring, Predictive Maintenance and Refurbishment The 119 papers presented at the Symposium, from research groups, consulting companies and manufacturers, constitute an important collection for investigators, engineers and technicians who are interested in updated information on hydraulic machinery. This book is intended to be a reference text comprising the latest innovations on this subject.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulic Power and Hydraulic Machinery The increasing interest taken in water-pressure machinery, and the extended field which has opened out of late years for its employment, have led me to record, in a form convenient for reference, existing experience in this branch of engineering. In this task I have availed myself of the information published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Insti tute, and of other Societies. I have thus not confined myself within the range of my own professional practice, but have utilised the experience of others wherever I have found that it would increase the usefulness of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Pumping and Hydraulic Machinery Hydraulic turbines, too, although not so important a subject perhaps for this country, constitutes, nevertheless, one of vital concern to many other parts of the world; a chapter, therefore, has been included dealing extensively with the theory and possibilities of water power, together with a number of practical examples demonstrating the relative adaptability of the several types of motors available for varying conditions of pressure head and other factors. It has been the endeavour of the author to treat exhaustively and systematically the whole range of pumping appliances, as well as the various machinery used in hydraulic transmission and generation of power. In so doing, a series of articles contributed to the Mechanical Engineer have been largely drawn upon, through the courtesy of the editor, and the author's thanks are here tendered, as also to the various firms who have kindly afforded information regarding their productions.
