Book excerpt: Producing Christmas trees is big business. Every year, growers in the United States and Canada deliver 30 to 40 million trees to consumers, earning $2 billion in revenue. Growers in Europe produce an additional 110 million trees, earning $1.64 billion. To prepare for future crops, growers also plant up to three times as many trees as they harvest every year. Bringing each crop to market involves years of intensive management. The critical information needed to manage diseases and disorders of all types of conifer trees is provided in Compendium of Conifer Diseases, Second Edition. Written by 102 experts from 18 countries, this new edition presents the modern world of forest pathology. Forests today grow under increasing stress from an ever-growing human population, newly identified and invasive species of pathogens, and a changing climate. And since publication of the first edition of this compendium in 1997, diagnostic tools have evolved considerably, enabling more precise identification of pathogens, greater understanding of population genetics, and better understanding of evolutionary relationships among various species. All of these factors are addressed in the new compendium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a compliment to me to be asked to prepare the fourth edition of Westcott's Plant Disease Handbook, and the decision to accept the responsi bility for the fourth edition and now the fifth edition was not taken lightly. The task has been a formidable one. I have always had a great respect professionally for Dr. Cynthia Westcott. That respect has grown considerably with the completion of the two editions. I now fully realize the tremendous amount of effort expended by Dr. Westcott in developing the Handbook. A book such as this is never finished, since one is never sure that everything has been included that should be. I would quote and endorse the words of Dr. Westcott in her preface to the first edition: "It is easy enough to start a book on plant disease. It is impossible to finish it. " This revision of the Handbook retains the same general format contained in the previous editions. The chemicals and pesticides regulations have been updated; a few taxonomic changes have been made in the bacteria, fungi, and mistletoes; the changing picture in diseases caused by viruses and/or viruslike agents has been described. A few new host plants have been added, and many recently reported diseases as well as previously known diseases listed now on new hosts have been included. In addition, photographs have been replaced where possible, and the color photograph section has been retained.

Book excerpt: Examining intercellular infections in certain plant species that lead to a symbiotic relationship between the host and its endophytic microbes, this volume demonstrates the ability of many types of endosymbionts, acting as a unit with hosts to better survive, compete and reproduce. Practical applications of such endophytes are also discussed, for e

Download or read book Advances in Nematology written by P.C. Trivedi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are one of the least understood agricultural pest problems throughout the world. Science of Plant Nematology has grown rapidly is the last three decades. There is a wide gap between the vast information generated for nematode control and that, which is actually utilised. The present book ``Advances in Nematology'' provides an authoritative review account of many aspects of current interest and progress in the field of Plant Nematology that has been made in the recent past. This book includes 21 articles by eminent nematologist on different aspects of the subject. Information on application of molecular biology in nematology, nematodes as biological model, race status in plant parasitic nematodes and nematode vectors of plant diseases have been reviewed covering all major aspects. Nematode diseases on wheat, rice, tobacco, mint, barley and horticultural crops and their management, specially in context to Indian scenario have been covered. Newer approaches for the management of plant parasitic nematodes including use of VAM fungi, biocontrol agents and integrated nematode management strategies have been included to project out their use on field scale. Articles on role of nematodes in disease complexes with fungi, genetic studies on the resistance of barley, breeding for nematode resistance in forage legumes and nematode pests of economically important crops in India and their managements have been added to the value of the book. Scholars and students of Nematology, researchers and extension workers and plant pathologist will find this book very useful.

Book Synopsis Pine Wilt Disease by : Bo Guang Zhao
Download or read book Pine Wilt Disease written by Bo Guang Zhao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-27 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pine forests face a global threat of pine wilt disease, which is being spread by vector beetles carrying pathogenic nematodes from dead trees to healthy ones. Among the host pines there are varying degrees of susceptibility, and nematode strains also contain a variety of virulences, both of which factors help to determine whether infected host trees will die or survive. As well, biotic and abiotic environmental factors influence the fate of infected trees. This book describes the history of the disease, pathogenic nematodes, vector beetles, the etiology and ecology of the disease, microorganisms involved, and control methods that utilize host resistance and biological control agents. Concrete, comprehensive, and the most up-to-date knowledge about this worldwide forest epidemic is presented for readers, enabling them to understand the nature and epidemic threat of pine wilt disease.
