This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Features of the Calcaneus gives an insight into the current state of treatment of calcaneal fractures. The calcaneus or "os calcis" is the most commonly fractured bone in the foot, in addition to being the largest, and has a major role in the biomechanics of the whole foot. There is heated debate as to whether operative versus nonoperative surgery is beneficial for the patient suffering from calcaneus fractures. Surgically, there exist two approaches to treat calcaneal fractures like the extensile approaches and minimally invasive techniques. The content of the book evolves from the basic understanding of the anatomy of the calcaneus, to fracture patterns, the mechanism of injury, and nonoperative and operative fixation options. There are chapters, which talk about radiology, patient selection, surgical exposures, and rehabilitation, which would help the trauma surgeon doing all kinds of fracture surgeries. Chapters on primary arthrodesis, minimally invasive surgery, malunion corrections and role of arthroscopy are meant for the specialist foot surgeons. And, of course, there are specific chapters, which discuss how outcomes are measured, and how patients are rehabilitated. Perhaps, one of the most important chapters reviews the evidence-based medicine for calcaneal fracture management. On the whole, the book serves as a reference for all matters related to calcaneal fractures.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of an historic sympo sium, the first joint symposium of the Austrian, German and Swiss Trauma Associations and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association of North America. In an effort to bring Euro pean and North American trauma surgeons closer together and foster a free and productive exchange of ideas, these associations chose the meeting of the Austrian, German, and Swiss trauma associations, which was held in Vienna in May of 1991, as the occasion for their first joint session. The Austrian Trauma Association, led by its President, Professor Heinz Kuderna, was the host. The joint symposium of the European and the North American trauma associations, conducted in English, was held concurrently with the regular meeting of the AGS, conducted in German. In order to explore and compare the current concepts in trauma on the two continents, the organizing committee felt that the discussion should focus on an area full of challenge and controversy. Thus the major fractures of the pilon, the talus, and the os calcis were chosen as the topics of discus sion. Each subject was introduced by two keynote speakers, one from Europe and one from North America, who were chosen by their respective trauma associations on the basis of their expertise and distinguished contributions. These presentations were then followed by five or six invited shorter presentations on the subject. At the end of each session, the presenters formed a panel, debated controversial points, and answered questions from the audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook brings together a unique vision and multidisciplinary approach – embracing and combining MD, DO and DPM foot and ankle training disciplines – into a singular focus on improving and mastering surgical treatment of foot and ankle disorders. It opens with a chapter presenting the specific preoperative considerations and protocols commonly followed by foot and ankle surgeons of all specialties. Divided into three main thematic sections detailing the forefoot, midfoot and hindfoot, each subsequent chapter follows a consistent chapter format presenting case examples, key surgical set-up and equipment needs and step-by-step clinical pearls for surgical excellence. Post-operative care and rehabilitation recommendations are also included for a well-rounded presentation of care from start to finish. Both common and complex pathologies and injuries are discussed, from bunion and hammertoe management to the Charcot foot and ankle, total ankle replacement, arthroscopy and arthroplasty techniques, amputations and biologics. Generous figures and intraoperative photos illustrate the procedures in vivid detail. The subspecialty of foot and ankle surgery is a highly specialized one, which is constantly evolving and improving. This speaks to the complexity of the foot and ankle complex, the multiple levels and articulations of the foot and the variety of pathologies encountered. This textbook leans on the unique experience and training of the OFAC attending surgeons and past fellows to reveal the pearls and keys to the efficient surgical treatment of the full gamut of foot and ankle pathologies. Ideally suited for residents and students whether MD, DO or DPM, Essential Foot and Ankle Surgical Techniques - EFAST for short - is a dynamic, multidisciplinary resource that covers the full range of pathologies and injuries an orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist would encounter in daily practice.

Book excerpt: This practical text reviews the most recent literature supporting clinical decisions regarding over a dozen common foot and ankle conditions, along with presentations of the techniques themselves, both surgical and non-surgical. The conditions are presented anatomically from forefoot to ankle, beginning with issues surrounding toenails, such as fungal infection and treatment of ingrown toenails, then proceeds to discuss the toes and toe joints, including hammertoe fixation, 2nd MPJ pathology, and Lapidus bunionectomy. Treatmentsfor arthritis of the midfoot and flatfoot follow, along with arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the ankle, surgical and non-surgical approaches for Achilles tendon ruptures, and treatments for Charcot neuroarthropathy, clubfoot and general considerations of wound care of the foot and ankle. Throughout, an emphasis is placed on the best available evidence for each treatment strategy. Evidence-Based Podiatry will be a valuable resource for podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, and residents, fellows and trainees treating these common foot and ankle conditions.
