The text is subdivided by subspecialty, with each chapter authored by both a trainee and an expert in the field. A selection of pivotal research studies that have shaped how practitioners diagnose, manage, and treat disease are reviewed in chronological order. The purpose, study design, results, and study limitations are reviewed, and the key takeaway points from each study are listed in a digestible, bullet-point format. By listing the studies in chronological order, the reader will have an understanding of how studies have built upon each other and how knowledge has evolved over time. This text can serve as a basic introductory text for first year ophthalmology residents around which a standardized curriculum can be shaped, a study guide for board examination study, or a reference text for practitioners and researchers at any stage of training and practice.

Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book excerpt: The field of ophthalmology has advanced considerably in the past several decades in terms of surgical and technical advancements, understanding the mechanism of diseases and treating conditions that were once considered untreatable. As is the case with so many other specialties in medicine, ophthalmology is guided by "evidence based medicine," based on the results of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). To put this powerful information in the hands of clinicians, this handbook was developed to provide a succinct yet comprehensive review of the most essential evidence-based medicine in ophthalmology. This essential text forms a framework for the evidence-based clinical practice of ophthalmic technicians, residents, academic and private practitioners of ophthalmology as well as researchers, optometrists and others. It also serves as a core review text for tests such as the OKAP and ophthalmology board exams, which emphasise knowledge based in the outcomes of major RCTs. This text covers the major research carried out in all of the subspecialties of ophthalmology including cornea, medical and surgical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, and pediatric ophthalmology. Each chapter has been carefully edited by top academic faculty at the Duke University Eye Center, who have an intimate understanding of the essential knowledge contained within the current ophthalmic literature and have contributed commentary on the results. This book therefore is not only a convenient review of the vital knowledge in ophthalmology, but also provides a keen analysis by world experts of the most up-to-date research in their respective fields. In short, this book promises to change the way eye care professionals use RCTs in clinical practice by putting this powerful information conveniently in their hands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is absolutely necessary that the practising ophthalmologist bases clinical and surgical decisions on valid data rather than simply on intuition, hearsay or peer-practice, although this is not to denigrate either one's own opinion or those of colleagues. Evidence-based medicine helps to improve clinical or surgical practice by evaluating the quality of clinical evidence and ensuring that only the best evidence from clinical research is used in the management of individual outcomes. Given that cataract patients may experience infection and complications it is best if the surgeon is on top of the current literature for prevention. Moreover, the surgeon should be au fait with the latest phacoemulsification techniques as well as advances in lens material and design. This marvellous publication covers all aspects of cataract surgery succinctly and provides the reader with enough guidance for best patient outcomes.
