This is because interpreting the speech signal is only the first step to an analysis. Describing the organization and function of a speech system is the next step. However, it is here that phonologists differ in their descriptions, as there are many current approaches in modern linguistics to undertaking phonological analyses of both normal and disordered speech. Much of the work in theoretical phonology of the last fifty years or so is of little use in either describing disordered speech or explaining it. This is because the dominant theoretical approach in linguists as a whole attempts elegant descriptions of linguistic data, not a psycholinguistic model of what speakers do when they speak. The latter is what is needed in clinical phonology. In this text, Martin J. Ball addresses these issues in an investigation of what principles should underlie a clinical phonology. This is not, however, simply another manual on how to do phonological analyses of disordered speech data, though examples of the application of various models of phonology to such data are provided. Nor is this a guide on how to do therapy, though a chapter on applications is included. Rather, this is an exploration of what theoretical underpinnings are best suited to describing, classifying, and treating the wide range of developmental and acquired speech disorders encountered in the speech-language pathology clinic.

The student of phonology is currently faced with a number of major and apparently competing theories, and the textbook writer who genuinely wishes to confront these questions is faced with the task of assessing the contribution each theory can make, while avoiding the merely fashionable or ephemeral in this contentious and evolving discipline. Roger Lass sees phonology as essentially a problem-centred discipline. Since in his view none of the supposedly comprehensive answers proposed to the questions raised above is really comprehensive or acceptable in all its detail, he concentrates rather on introducing the student to the perennial concerns in the study of sound structure. Hence his book adopts a broad and eclectic framework, unbiased toward any one model or theory. Book excerpt: This book offers thorough analyses of two typologically different languages, English and Slovak, from the viewpoint of two different approaches to language: namely, structuralism, as introduced by Ferdinand de Saussure in the first half of the 20th century, and generativism, based on the ideas of Noam Chomsky’s generative grammar presented in the 1960s. Considering structuralist and generative phonology, the most important unit of phonological analysis for both is the syllable. Most of the theories within generative phonology provide a syllable model or rules for syllabification that are considered language-universal, but syllabification is not exhaustive since consonants that are part of a word but somehow violate the given syllable model or rules remain unsyllabified. On the other hand, in structuralist phonology, syllable theories fulfil the condition of universality such that all languages have syllables, and their syllabification is always exhaustive; that is, all segments in a word are syllabified. In this book, a generative understanding of the syllable is represented by the CVX syllable theory and the Syllable Structure Algorithm from Lexical Phonology, and the synthetic phonological theory was chosen to typify structuralism. As such, the book adds to current research bridging the gap between generative and structuralist linguistics.
