Nevertheless, many of the Indians are already at work, and furnish ample refutation of the assertion that the Indian will not work. There is no escape from the inexorable logic of facts. The Choctaws, Chickasaws, Cherokees, and Creeks, as farmers, com pare favorably with the whites. They have each organized systems of government similar to our own, with legislative assemblies, judiciary department, and a good system of common schools. The agent, in his report of 1868, said, The Cherokees are well advanced in civilization and refinement; they have a number of citizens who would compare favorably with the politicians, statesmen, jurists, and divines of some of the States of the Union.
