Book excerpt: This book embarks on a journey never taken before, approaching the imaging of the disease of achalasia with new pathophysiological assumptions in mind, coming from the Chicago Classification of Manometric diagnosis. Using state-of-the-art, modern x-ray technology, the authors have developed a schematic and simple approach to detection, diagnosis, and patient stadiation and prognostic stratification, for radiologists, clinicians, and students. Key Features: 1. Serves as a useful guide to structured and comprehensive reporting of barium swallows, both in achalasia and other oesophageal motility disorders. 2. Allows radiologists, both specialists, and trainees, to comprehensively understand achalasia from anatomic, pathophysiologic, therapeutic points of view, allowing for exact comprehension, detection, and reporting of the radiologic hallmarks of the disease. 3. Empowers readers to diagnose and define the exact achalasia subtype in each patient, due to the specifically developed FBF score.

Book excerpt: Mainly using untapped oral histories of Italian Jews and Catholics, this book shows that Catholics in Italy who saved Jews firmly believed they were doing so in consonance with the Pope's wishes, Readers will get to know these courageous individuals through their inspiring memoirs. Yours Is a Precious Witness strives to redraw a common picture of Pius XII. He spoke loudly -- not in words that would have resulted in Nazi retaliations, but in actions that directly saved thousands of Jews, Convents, monasteries and papal buildings in Italy became havens for refugees. Pius XXII did not bow to the Nazis and Fascists. He also did not bow to the pressure of world opinion. He took the more courageous path of direct action. His example inspired Italians to respond with countless acts of individual heroism. The little-known result is that, while 67 percent of European Jews were killed, 85 percent of Italy's Jews were saved. The people who were there -- the people who knew best -- credit Pius XII for this moral victory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim was to explain in detail the facts surrounding Fascist anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews in Mussolini's Italy. Too many people in Italy and elsewhere underestimate or deny the tragic fate of European Jewry and anti-Semitism between the two world wars. A few short years ago anti-Semitism appeared defeated and reduced to a tiny group of fanatics. But now it seems to be regaining ground in its more political incarnation, probably the most dangerous one, because next to the religious, social and economic varieties it is the most insidious of all. The author occupies a central position among Italian historians specialized in modern Italy's political history. He broke new ground by first publishing this book in 1961 having obtained special permission to consult the files in the Archives of the Italian Jewish Communities concerning the Fascist regime's persecution of the Jews in Italy from 1938 to 1945. The book's release coincided with the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem that brought the Holocaust to the attention of other historians and to the world public. The English translation of the final 1993 edition was supported by a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This paperback and electronic book edition is published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rafael Merry del Val (1865-1930) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who had one of the most dazzling careers in ecclesiastical history: he was a secret supernumerary chamberlain at the age of 21, a secret participating chamberlain at the age of 26, an apostolic delegate to Canada at age 31, president of the Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles and archbishop at age 34, secretary of state for Pius X (1903-1914) and cardinal at age 38, archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and prefect of the Fabric of St. Peter at age 48, secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Office at age 49. In 1953, his beatification process was introduced to the Congregation for Rites. In this study, Philippe Roy-Lysencourt presents the life of this personage, his curial charges, his relations with the popes he served (Leo XIII, Pius X, Benedict XV, and Pius XI), his apostolate, his unexpected death and the furor it caused. The book includes an inventory of sources for understanding Cardinal Merry del Val’s life, a list of his published writings, as well as a bibliography of the works written about him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant, disturbing study of anorexic behavior amongst medieval Italian female saints . . . original, controversial, superbly executed.” —Kirkus Reviews Is there a resemblance between the contemporary anorexic teenager counting every calorie in her single-minded pursuit of thinness, and an ascetic medieval saint examining her every desire? Rudolph M. Bell suggests that the answer is yes. “Everyone interested in anorexia nervosa . . . should skim this book or study it. It will make you realize how dependent upon culture the definition of disease is. I will never look at an anorexic patient in the same way again.” —Howard Spiro, M.D., Gastroenterology “[This] book is a first-class social history and is well-documented both in its historical and scientific portions.” —Vern L. Bullough, American Historical Review “A significant contribution to revisionist history, which re-examines events in light of feminist thought . . . Bell is particularly skillful in describing behavior within its time and culture, which would be bizarre by today’s norms, without reducing it to the pathological.” —Mary Lassance Parthun, Toronto Globe and Mail “Bell is both enlightened and convincing. His book is impressively researched, easy to read, and utterly fascinating.” —Sheila MacLeod, New Statesman

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.
