Book Synopsis The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models by : Kerry Emanuel
Download or read book The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models written by Kerry Emanuel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents descriptions of numerical models for testing cumulus in cloud fields. It is divided into six parts. Part I provides an overview of the problem, including descriptions of cumulus clouds and the effects of ensembles of cumulus clouds on mass, momentum, and vorticity distributions. A review of closure assumptions is also provided. A review of "classical" convection schemes in widespread use is provided in Part II. The special problems associated with the representation of convection in mesoscale models are discussed in Part III, along with descriptions of some of the commonly used mesoscale schemes. Part IV covers some of the problems associated with the representation of convection in climate models, while the parameterization of slantwise convection is the subject of Part V.

Download or read book The Cumulus and Meteorological Events of the Florida Peninsula During a Particular Summertime Period written by Vernon G. Plank and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cumulus cloud events of the Florida peninsula that were observed during a 19-day period of photoreconnaissance in August and September 1957 are described and illustrated. The associated meteorological and rainfall events are also described and the intercorrelations among the various observations are pointed out. The study findings revealed that the principal factors governing the cloud and rainfall situations of the different days were (1) the low-level advection of water vapor into the peninsula from the oceanic surroundings, (2) the wind transport, into the heated peninsula from the oceans during the daytime, of pre -existing cumulus populations containing appreciable liquid water, (3) the low-level convergence, and associated updraft motion, engendered by the synoptic situation and the peninsula sea breezes, and (4) the precipitable water content of the lower Florida air mass. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives of this research are: (1) to critically evaluate the Kuo and Arakawa Schubert (A-S) cumulus parameterization schemes for numerical weather prediction; and (2) to improve these parameterization schemes to improve precipitation forecasts on the global scale. Major improvements to the Kuo scheme include prediction of cloud top height and incorporation of the effect of entrainment on cloud temperature and mixing ratio profiles. This enables the Kuo scheme to parameterize shallow to medium clouds as well as deep clouds. Tests of the Kuo scheme using a semi-prognostic approach and a cloud cluster model indicate that the improved version verifies better with observation during weaker convective periods. Experimental predictions were made and the results clearly demonstrated the ability of the AFGL model to predict large-scale stratiform precipitation. With incorporation of the modified Kuo scheme, the area of convective precipitation can also be well predicted. However, the predicted convective precipitation area is generally broader and the amount of rainfall smaller than observed which may be attributed to the resolution of the AFGL model in that it cannot resolve the narrow band of the cold front, ther major mesoscale rain-producing system. Implementation of the A-S scheme in the AFGL model also produced a reasonable distribution of convective precipitation but the precipitation area is more concentrated and sometimes is produced in an observed clear area. This result may be caused by the current implementation of the A-S scheme in the AFGL model, in which the cloud base is assumed to be 500 m above the ground surface.
Book Synopsis The Florida Area Cumulus Experiment by : W. L. Woodley
Download or read book The Florida Area Cumulus Experiment written by W. L. Woodley and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Florida Area Cumulus Experiment (FACE) has developed as the logical extension of the successful series of single cloud experiments conducted by NOAA's Experimental Meteorology Laboratory (now the Cumulus Group of the National Hurricane and Experimental Meteorology Laboratory) over the Caribbean and Florida. Although the results of FACE studies have been painstakingly reported in the literature, conversations with colleagues have made it obvious that the empirical and theoretical foundations for this experiment are not well understood. Confusion still exists in the minds of some as to the rationale for FACE and its design. The need exists then for a detailed exposition of all aspects of the FACE effort for consideration and discussion by the scientific community. With this report we attempt to fulfill this need.

Book Synopsis Parameterization of Cumulus Convection for Inclusion in a Tropical Operational Forecasting Model by : Louis Berkofsky
Download or read book Parameterization of Cumulus Convection for Inclusion in a Tropical Operational Forecasting Model written by Louis Berkofsky and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations for large-scale tropical flow, when averaged horizontally over a region large enough to contain an ensemble of clouds, include terms which represent the vertical convergence of the vertical eddy transport of sensible heat and of moisture. By assuming that these convergences are related to cumulus convection, the effect of an assumed population of cumulus clouds may be introduced into the large-scale model. The magnitude of the cumulus cloud effects must then be obtained from a cloud model, using predicted environmental parameters as input. In this investigation, the clouds are represented by a steady state plume model. Preliminary results, using assumed environmental parameters, are presented. (Author).
