Book Synopsis Politics and Culture in International History by : Adda B. Bozeman
Download or read book Politics and Culture in International History written by Adda B. Bozeman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current political conflicts in Somalia and Russia make the reappearance of this book as relevant as ever. Politics and Culture in International History illumines world politics by identifying the causes of conflict and war and assessing the validity of schemes for peace and unity. Bozeman maintains that political systems are grounded in cultures; thus, international relations are by definition hitercultural relations. She deals exclusively with the thought patterns of the world's literate civilizations and societies between the fourth millenium B.C. and the fifteenth century A.D. In a substantial new introduction, Bozeman analyzes world politics over the last half century, showing how the interplay of politics and culture has intensified. She notes that the world's assembly of states is no longer held together by substantive accords on norms, purposes, and values, but by loose agreements on the use offorms, techniques, and words. The causes and effects of these changes between the 1950s and 1990s are assayed by Bozeman.

Book Synopsis Culture et relations internationales by : Françoise Massart-Pierard
Download or read book Culture et relations internationales written by Françoise Massart-Pierard and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2007 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Culture in World Politics by : Dominique Jacquin-Berdal
Download or read book Culture in World Politics written by Dominique Jacquin-Berdal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World politics can be viewed as the patterns of cooperation and conflict between groups of people with different cultural backgrounds. Surprisingly, though, for several decades the topics of culture in international relations has been largely ignored. Only recently an increasing interest has (re-)emerged in how world politics is affected by cultures, i.e. by collectively shared perceptions, norms and beliefs. Culture in World Politics contributes to this development by presenting a variety of ways in which the roles of cultures in world politics can be studied. A major aim of the book is to highlight alternative ways of thinking about the effects of culture on international relations, and to stimulate discussion on the relative merit of these various approaches. The book also shows the relevance of cultural studies for understanding two areas often assumed to be free of cultural influences: international violence, and the international political economy. The contributions not only include insightful theoretical discussions, but also show how illuminating empirical analyses can be undertaken with the help of cultural theories.

Book Synopsis Culture and Foreign Policy by : Howard J. Wiarda
Download or read book Culture and Foreign Policy written by Howard J. Wiarda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political culture refers to the basic values, ideas, beliefs and political orientations by which countries, societies, and whole regions are guided. The underlying belief systems that shape cultures and societies and cause them to behave in certain, often distinct ways. The puzzle or query that chiefly concerns this author is why the United States (US) and its foreign policy have such a hard time understanding cultures and societies other than their own. This provocative book argues that the US needs to end its attitudes of superiority and condescension toward other nations and cultures and redirect its foreign policy accordingly. After an introduction that sets forth the main theoretical and conceptual arguments, the next chapters explore all the main areas of the world. The Conclusion pulls all these themes together, analyzes the common patterns that emerge, and suggests new directions for U.S foreign policy.
Book Synopsis Culture and External Relations by : Jozef Bátora
Download or read book Culture and External Relations written by Jozef Bátora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political entities use culture to support their soft power potential, to generate goodwill, to frame international agenda in particular ways, to erect and re-enact boundaries and/or to create societal linkages across them. While the importance of culture has been on the rise in the realm of foreign affairs, its role in this field remains one of the most under-studied aspects of state policy. In this book, a range of international experts take an unprecedented look at what role external cultural policy plays in foreign affairs. The book features historical case studies ranging from European 'civilizing' engagement with nineteenth-century China to uses of Abstract Expressionism as an instrument in the ideological struggles of the Cold War. Conceptual issues ranging from the dynamics of the 'Anglosphere' to the effects of what some term the 'culture of liberal democracy' are addressed. Current trends in the uses of culture in the EU's external relations both from the perspective of institutional developments, policies and practices in the EU and from the perspective of countries engaged by the EU's cultural policies are also discussed in greater detail. The systematic, theoretically informed and empirically supported analyses make this book an indispensable read for scholars and policy makers wishing to gain a new understanding of the role that culture plays in foreign affairs.

Book Synopsis Histoire culturelle des relations internationales by : Denis Rolland
Download or read book Histoire culturelle des relations internationales written by Denis Rolland and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Culture matters by : Robert Hendershot
Download or read book Culture matters written by Robert Hendershot and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how intangible aspects of international relations – including identity, memory, representation, and symbolic perception – have helped to shape the development and contribute to the endurance of the Anglo-American special relationship. Challenging traditional interpretations of US-UK relations and breaking new ground with fresh analyses of cultural symbols, discourses, and ideologies, this volume fills important gaps in our collective understanding of the special relationship’s operation and exposes new analytical spaces in which we can re-evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Designed to breathe new life into old debates about the relationship’s purported specialness, this book offers a multidisciplinary exploration of literary representations, screen representations, political representations, representations in memory, and the influence of cultural connections and constructs which have historically animated Anglo-American interaction.
