This book was released on 1996 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural resources investigations of multiple levee and revetment construction items located along the Mississippi River in St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, and Jefferson parishes, Louisiana, were conducted by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., from June to November 1987. Nine construction items investigated within the project area include Vacherie, Angelina, Reserve, Willow Bend, Montz, Waterford, and Luling revetments, and the Upper and Lower Edgard levee enlargements. The historic development of the study area, focusing on trajectories of economic change and their impact on historic man-land relationships, is reviewed. Following the presentation of a period-based chronological overview, from colonial beginnings to the industrial age, significant themes in the history of the study area are delineated. Insofar as the effect on land-use was concerned, monocrop sugar agriculture and rice production during the postbellum period clearly are the dominant themes. For that reason, historical analyses of sugar and rice production for each of the nine project areas were conducted. An analysis of land tenure also was undertaken to verify land-use patterns after the Civil War.

Download or read book Managing Flood Risk written by Anna Serra-Llobet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past half century has seen an evolution in thinking from ‘flood control’ to ‘flood risk management’, recognizing that risk results from both hazard and vulnerability. Rather than rely only on engineering structures to reduce flood magnitude or extent, recent policies emphasize avoiding construction in flood-prone areas (or moving people from floodplains), reducing impacts on exposed populations through early warning systems, and insurance to aid in recovery. Implementing this new approach faces many challenges but also offers opportunities for synergies, as described in this book for a range of large floodplain rivers and smaller urban streams across North America and Europe. This book is unique in presenting the voices of those on the front lines of implementing a new paradigm in flood risk management, each river with a unique set of challenges and opportunities derived from its specific geography as well as differences in governance between the American and European contexts.

Book excerpt: This, the 30th edition of the "United States Government Printing Office Style Manual," is the first revision to this authoritative style manual since 2002. The "GPO Style Manual, as it is popularly known, is issued under the authority of section 1105 of Title 44 U.S.C., which requires the Public Printer, as head of the GPO to "dtermine the form and style in which the printing...ordered by a department is executed...having proper reagrd to economy, workmanship, and the purposes for which the work is needed." The Manual is prepared by the GPO Style Board, composed of proofreading, printing, and Government documents specialists from within GPO, where all congressional publications, and many other key Federal Government documents are prepared. The first "GPO Style Manual" appeared in 1894. It was developed orginally as a printer's stylebook to standardize word and type treatment and remains so today. Through successived editions, however, the "GPO Style Manual" has come to be widely recognized by writers and editors both within and outside the Federal Government as one of the most useful resources in the editorial arsenal. This new, revised version of the "GPO Style Manual" has been thoroughly redesigned to make it more modern and easier to read, and the content has been updated generally throughout in keeping with current usage.
