Book excerpt: This literature and records search was conducted to determine if known historic and/or prehistoric sites within the flood control project area at the Redwood River between river miles 64.7 and 72.6, exist and to estimate the potential of additional sites. The literature and records searched indicated no recorded prehistoric sites in the project area; however, archaeological survey and testing program should be conducted because of the extremely high site potential along the Redwood River. The only recorded historic building in the project area, the Lyon County Court House in Marshall, will not be affected by the proposed action. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate alternative measures and select a plan for insuring effective operation on the existing flood control project and providing flood protection to new unprotected development. Recurrent flooding of the Redwood River together with damaging overflows into the adjoining Cottonwood River basin has resulted in flood damages and the need for local emergency flood evacuation. The selected plan consists of channel widening, straightening, bank reshaping, levees, an overflow diversion structure with appurtenant control and outlet works, interior drainage works, aesthetic measure, s recreational facilities, and required relocations. The plan also includes revegetation of all disturbed areas. A 133-year degree of flood protection for the City of Marshall and adjacent urbanized areas would be provided. This report consists of a main report and two appendices.

Book Synopsis Sacred Natural Sites by : Bas Verschuuren
Download or read book Sacred Natural Sites written by Bas Verschuuren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Natural Sites are the world's oldest protected places. This book focuses on a wide spread of both iconic and lesser known examples such as sacred groves of the Western Ghats (India), Sagarmatha /Chomolongma (Mt Everest, Nepal, Tibet - and China), the Golden Mountains of Altai (Russia), Holy Island of Lindisfarne (UK) and the sacred lakes of the Niger Delta (Nigeria). The book illustrates that sacred natural sites, although often under threat, exist within and outside formally recognised protected areas, heritage sites. Sacred natural sites may well be some of the last strongholds for building resilient networks of connected landscapes. They also form important nodes for maintaining a dynamic socio-cultural fabric in the face of global change. The diverse authors bridge the gap between approaches to the conservation of cultural and biological diversity by taking into account cultural and spiritual values together with the socio-economic interests of the custodian communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant
Book Synopsis Ecological Regions of North America by :
Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.
