Book excerpt: This collection of essays, first published in 1984, on multicultural education seeks to introduce teachers, teacher educators, educational administrators, policymakers and others to several of the most significant dimensions of the field. But it also brings out the complexity of the issues and the dangers of over-simplification, the inadequacies of much of the available data, and the need for better long-term strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook for curriculum planners reports on two specific aspects of the current wave of general education reform: the creation or revival of common or "core" courses within general-education curricula and the emergence of cultural complexity and multiplicity as organizing themes in these new, or newly revised, core programs. The book analyzes the newly emerging curricular renaissance and demonstrates why colleges and universities view these new core courses on cultural legacies as important priorities. In addition, it outlines the kinds of questions faculties must address in framing and sustaining core programs. Chapters 1 and 2 treat national trends that are discernible in the development of core curricula that address cultural pluralism, as well as issues and choices facing the participating institutions as they implement their core programs. Examples are used from these institutions, with analytical commentary, to illustrate the practice. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the processes of faculty development and core curriculum implementation, respectively. Each of these chapters ends with a series of recommendations for good practice. Chapter 5 summarizes the characteristics of strong core programs that engage cultural pluralism, An "Afterword" identifies challenges for the future. The book includes syllabi, excerpts from core proposals, curriculum profiles, and lists of questions to guide campus planners. (Contains 31 annotated bibliographic references.) (GLR)

Book excerpt: This monograph reports on a study which examined how 92 colleges participating in a multiproject initiative, "American Commitments: Diversity, Democracy and Liberal Learning," are addressing issues of diversity in their general education curricula, policies, and practices. Chapter 1 focuses on emerging trends and promising practices, and includes discussions of: U.S. pluralism; culture and identity; prejudice, discrimination, and the pursuits of justice; education for social responsibility; and diversity in the core curriculum. Chapter 2 considers the process and politics of curricular change. Topics addressed include: effective diversity learning, defining learning goals, questions for faculty dialogue, the change process, and pedagogical change and faculty development. Chapter 3 covers the shaping of effective curricular models, including infusing diversity across the curriculum, requirements allowing students to choose among many courses, and the single course or course sequence requirement. A conclusion urges a four-part curricular engagement for effective citizenship: study of one's own culture, pluralism and pursuit of justice, justice seeking, and pluralism in majors and concentrations. An afterword by Carol Geary Schneider is titled: "Education for Cultural and Democratic Pluralism." Extensive appendices include exemplary syllabi, a listing of participating institutions, a list of resources, and a summary review of the literature. (Contains 11 references.) (DB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, the sixth edition of this definitive text provides students a strong background in the conceptual, theoretical, and philosophical issues in multicultural education from a leading authority and scholarly leader of the field---James A. Banks. In the opening chapter author Banks presents his well-known and widely used concept of Dimensions of Multicultural Education to help build an understanding of how the various components of multicultural education are interrelated. He then provides an overview on preparing students to function as effective citizens in a global world; discusses the dimensions, history, and goals of multicultural education; presents the conceptual, philosophical, and research issues related to education and diversity; examines the issues involved in curriculum and teaching; looks at gender equity, disability, giftedness, and language diversity; and focuses on intergroup relations and principles for teaching and learning. This new edition incorporates new concepts, theories, research, and developments in the field of multicultural education and features: A new Chapter 5, "Increasing Student Academic Achievement: Paradigms and Explanations" provides important explanations for the achievement gap and suggests ways that educators can work to close it. A new Chapter 7, "Researching Race, Culture, and Difference," explains the unique characteristics of multicultural research and how it differs from mainstream research in education and social science. A new Chapter 14, "Principles for Teaching and Learning in a Multicultural Society" contains research-based guidelines for reforming teaching and the school in order to increase the academic achievement and social development of students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, language, and gender groups. A new Appendix—"Essential Principles Checklist"—designed to help educators determine the extent to which practices within their schools, colleges, and universities are consistent with the research-based findings described in the book.

Book excerpt: This document discusses higher education's current debate about emphasizing diversity in the curriculum as part of the academy's continuing engagement with the wider society and with fundamental societal questions. The introduction suggests that the academy stakes its claims to leadership and service on a continuous engagement with nonacademic issues whose outcome will significantly affect individual lives. Chapter 1 discusses the importance of paying attention to differences as certain differences correlate with differential power in American society. Chapter 2 discusses the place of multiculturalism in the college curriculum. Chapter 3 discusses the two predominant traditional curricular strategies--the dedicated course and development of critical thinking abilities--and discusses the shift from "Western Civilization" courses to the study of "World Cultures." Chapter 4 addresses inclusion of values of diversity and democracy in the college curriculum in a discussion of educational premises and curricular strategies. Chapter 5 presents curricular recommendations relating to study of: (1) one's own traditions; (2) American pluralism and justice; (3) experiences in justice seeking; and (4) multicultural and relational pluralism within the major. The concluding chapter issues an invitation to colleges around the country to discuss these recommendations in groups reflecting the range of American diversities. (Contains 16 references.) (CK)

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how it is possible to value, respect and utilise cultural diversity and yet achieve a 'good education' for all. The authors contend that few issues in education can be examined in isolation from the world outside. This must surely apply to the question of cultural, social and economic differences among children, and this book continually emphasises the importance of a healthy social climate as well as mastery of language, literacy and numeracy. The book examines different teaching procedures and advises on curriculum construction and content, especially the relationships between the teaching and learning of language and teaching and learning in a language. In short, the authors have examined the why, the what and the how of schooling to accommodate educational diversity and have suggested an approach that is constructive and stimulating rather than simply therapeutic.
