The sinonization took place at various levels of Tibetan culture by force, violence, indoctrination and such other means. Because Tibet remained isolated, and so failed to impress the outside world about its independent existence. The Chinese advent followed by the 1959 revolt in Tibet disturbed the calm and orderly society and resulted in the fleeing of H.H. the Dalai Lama along with about 80,000 Tibetan souls as refugees to India, Nepal and Bhutan.

Book excerpt: The flight of the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso from Tibet to India in 1959 marks the beginning of the Tibetan diaspora. Until this day, an estimated 130,000 Tibetan refugees have fled occupied Tibet, of which around 110,000 live in settlements in Indian exile. The Tibetans in India have established a functioning government, solid housing as well as various institutions ensuring the preservation of Tibetan culture. While the initial purpose of the Tibetan exile, claiming the independence of their home-land, has become an unrealistic objective, the Tibetan refugee situation in India has become a permanent matter. The political and social efforts of preserving the Tibetan cultural identity in exile have been held up until this day and have become a constant regulation of individual identity and identity development. Investigating theoretical concepts on the topic of identity, it has been examined that through formalization and institutionalization aspects of cultural identity can be fixed and work as a framework and orientation for prospective identity development, but can never constitute an individual cultural identity. This is the case, because the contemporary identity is a process of constant development, influenced and constituted by social practices, historical incidents and subjective perception. It has been concluded, that the current Tibetan approach in exile of artificially preserving a previously defined cultural identity through cultural and social isolation, has harming psychological, economical, and social effects on the Tibetan individuals. Since the institutionalization of Tibetan cultural identity has already been accomplished, it can be concluded that a more assimilative approach in terms of social and cultural integration would be beneficial.

The study based on field research emphasizes a hybrid process of the Tibetan Muslim's Diaspora in exile. A cultural Buddhist Tibetan heritage associated with Kashmiri Muslim rituals and customs creates hybrid cultural practices and traditions, which could be characterized as rhizomatic.

The author of part one compares the theoretical basis for relations between the Chinese Government and minority groups with actual practice in the largest autonomous region, Tibet. His account outlines life in Tibet before, during and after the 1950-1959 uprising, and describes the situation today regarding education, religion, language and administration. He points out that the professed desire of the government to preserve minority cultures has not worked in practice and that Tibet is the least successful example of relations between the government and a minority group. While health and welfare of minority groups may have improved, official policy has led to the suppression of Tibetan religion and culture with the aim of integrating the Tibetan people in Chinese culture. He contends that political oppression and human rights violations are continuing. The author of part 2 describes the history of Tibet and of the Dalai Lamas, and of the Chinese invasion and its aftermath, including the situation of Tibetans in exile. He concludes that racial discrimination is becoming increasingly part of the Tibetan problem and warns that the longer the delay in reaching a settlement, the more likely that any traces of Tibetan culture remaining will be destroyed.

For those fifty years, the vast majority of Tibetans have kept their stateless refugee status in India and Nepal as a reminder to themselves and the world that Tibet is under Chinese occupation and that they are committed to returning someday. In the 1990s, the U.S. Congress passed legislation that allowed 1,000 Tibetans and their families to immigrate to the United States; a decade later the total U.S. population includes some 10,000 Tibetans. Not only is the social fact of the migration—its historical and political contexts—of interest, but also how migration and resettlement in the U.S. reflect emergent identity formations among members of a stateless society. Immigrant Ambassadors examines Tibetan identity at a critical juncture in the diaspora's expansion, and argues that increased migration to the West is both facilitated and marked by changing understandings of what it means to be a twenty-first-century Tibetan—deterritorialized, activist, and cosmopolitan.
