Sea-level rise and landscape inundation are often emphasized as the primary threat to cultural heritage from climate change; erosion is identified as the more significant hazard for archaeological sites because of its deterioration of the landscape. A meta-analysis of coastal vulnerability assessments provides a framework for cultural resource managers to address heritage sites under their management. An interdisciplinary assessment applies decadal projections to rank North Carolina's 5000-plus coastal archaeological sites by vulnerability to erosion and cultural significance, establishing a foundation for near-term planning. Finally, a case study examines a major archaeological site in North Carolina experiencing rapid erosion. Innovative mitigation measures deployed at the site are considered within the context of archaeology and the implications for future research.

Book excerpt: North Carolina's written history begins in the sixteenth century with the voyages of Sir Walter Raleigh and the founding of the ill-fated Lost Colony on Roanoke Island. But there is a deeper, unwritten past that predates the state's recorded history. The region we now know as North Carolina was settled more than 10,000 years ago, but because early inhabitants left no written record, their story must be painstakingly reconstructed from the fragmentary and fragile archaeological record they left behind. Time before History is the first comprehensive account of the archaeology of North Carolina. Weaving together a wealth of information gleaned from archaeological excavations and surveys carried out across the state--from the mountains to the coast--it presents a fascinating, readable narrative of the state's native past across a vast sweep of time, from the Paleo-Indian period, when the first immigrants to North America crossed a land bridge that spanned the Bering Strait, through the arrival of European traders and settlers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Book excerpt: This thesis is a multi-disciplinary geological and maritime archaeological study. This study's purpose is to create exploratory models that utilize analyses of geophysical factors within and around northeastern North Carolina's Albemarle Estuarine System in relation to archaeological sites there. These models should help determine what sites are being threatened within the Albemarle Estuarine System's shore zone. Four geological aspects will be analyzed: waves derived from wind, shoreline erosion, sediment accumulation, and inundation from sea-level rise. By analyzing these four properties, change over time and possible patterns of potential site damage within Albemarle Sound can be monitored. In addition to studying those four principles, the recent maritime archaeological research of Franklin Price (2006), Adam Friedman (2008), and Amy Leuchtmann (2011) regarding intertidal terrestrial site dispersal in Albemarle Sound will be compared with geologic data. Combined, the two datasets endeavor to model environmental phenomena of significance in predicting damage to archaeological sites in and around the shore zone.

Book excerpt: A reconsideration of the seminal projectile point typology In the 1964 landmark publication The Formative Cultures of the Carolina Piedmont, Joffre Coe established a projectile point typology and chronology that, for the first time, allowed archaeologists to identify the relative age of a site or site deposit based on the point types recovered there. Consistent with the cultural-historical paradigm of the day, the “Coe axiom” stipulated that only one point type was produced at one moment in time in a particular location. Moreover, Coe identified periods of “cultural continuity” and “discontinuity” in the chronology based on perceived similarities and differences in point styles through time. In Time, Typology, and Point Traditions in North Carolina Archaeology: Formative Cultures Reconsidered, I. Randolph Daniel Jr. reevaluates the Coe typology and sequence, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. Daniel reviews the history of the projectile point type concept in the Southeast and revisits both Coe’s axiom and his notions regarding cultural continuity and change based on point types. In addition, Daniel updates Coe’s typology by clarifying or revising existing types and including types unrecognized in Coe’s monograph. Daniel also adopts a practice-centered approach to interpreting types and organizes them into several technological traditions that trace ancestral- descendent communities of practice that relate to our current understanding of North Carolina prehistory. Appealing to professional and avocational archaeologists, Daniel provides ample illustrations of points in the book as well as color versions on a dedicated website. Daniel dedicates a final chapter to a discussion of the ethical issues related to professional archaeologists using private artifact collections. He calls for greater collaboration between professional and avocational communities, noting the scientific value of some private collections.

Book excerpt: "This thesis created a working cultural resource inventory and landscape analysis of Troublesome Creek Ironworks (TCI). TCI is located in Rockingham County and is owned by the Rockingham County Historical Society. The property is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Three archaeological sites at TCI were examined for this research: a 19th century farmhouse site, a 19th century cabin site, and the possible location of Revolutionary War entrenchments. Little is known regarding the histories of these sites and data obtained through archaeological survey investigations at TCI during 2005 and 2010 provided the basis for a geographical and archaeological assessment of these sites across this landscape. Spatial analysis of archaeological material recovered from these sites provided insight into cultural patterns across the landscape. Dates for all three sites were derived from ceramic, flat window glass, and nail artifact analysis. Artifact patterns and dates were compared to the written site histories, where available, to improve overall site interpretation. Analysis of data obtained from investigations of the farmhouse site correlated to many historical events at TCI and also revealed possible evidence of an earlier house location at TCI. Examination of the cabin site established relative dates for the structure, confirming an oral history of the site. The entrenchment site survey did not produce evidence to support its association with events surrounding the Revolutionary war; however, this is most likely due to looting that has occurred at the site over the past several decades. Data obtained through these survey investigations at TCI were compared to similar sites in the North Carolina Piedmont to examine patterns between sites sharing similar temporal and functional contexts. Many similarities in artifact assemblages were found for these sites in the Piedmont. Due to the size of the property and the numerous cultural resources, more extensive investigations are needed to begin tying all the sites and written histories together at TCI. Extensions to the existing survey grids as well as several test excavations across the sites at TCI will generate a more comprehensive analysis of the cultural resources across the landscape. While more research is needed to fully understand TCI's history, this research improved the site interpretation throughout the property."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: With its wide spectrum of data, case studies, monitoring, and experimental and numerical simulation techniques, the multidisciplinary approach of material, environmental, and computer science applied to the conservation of cultural heritage offers several opportunities for the heritage science and conservation community to map and monitor state-of-the-art knowledge on natural and human-induced climate change impacts on cultural heritage—mainly constituted by the built environment—in Europe and Latin America. Geosciences’ Special Issue titled “Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Resources Threatened by Climate Change” was launched to take stock of the existing but still fragmentary knowledge on this challenge, and to enable the community to respond to the implementation of the Paris agreement. These 10 papers exploit a broad range of data derived from preventive conservation monitoring conducted indoors in museums, churches, historical buildings, or outdoors in archeological sites and city centers. Case studies presented in the papers focus on a well-assorted sample of decay phenomena occurring on heritage materials (e.g., surface recession and biomass accumulation on limestone, depositions of pollutant on marble, salt weathering on inorganic building materials, and weathering processes on mortars in many local- to regional-scale study areas in the Scandinavian Peninsula, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, and Panama). Besides monitoring, the methodological approaches showcased include, but are not limited to, original material characterization, decay product characterization, and climate and numerical modelling on material components for assessing environmental impact and climate change effects.
