Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the cradle of psychoanalysis was in Vienna, the scene of Sigmund Freud's activities at the beginning of the century. But how and when did psychoanalysis reach the other countries of Europe? What development did it undergo there? How did the different mentalities, political and cultural backgrounds as well as the personal particularities of its respective advocates affect psychoanalysis? What was its position in the past and what is its position today? These and other questions on the varied development and the present situation of psychoanalysis in the countries of eastern and western Europe are investigated by renowned psychoanalysts drawing on the experience and knowledge acquired in their own work. The result is a new conpendium on psychoanalysis in Europe containing all up-to-date information. Informative and instructive, at times as exciting as a detective story, Psychoanalysis International will possibly be of interest even to non-analysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study on the pattern of guilt and wandering in literature, this book examines the relationship between the two complex concepts as they appear in twentieth-century novels, positing its methodological premises on archetypal criticism and both close and distant reading, but also drawing on psychology, anthropology, mythology, and religion. This research deciphers a common paradigm and literary representation whose archetype within Western literature is found in the biblical figure of Cain, while presenting a critical framework valid for boundary-crossing comparative approaches. From Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory and Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano, to Wolfgang Koeppen’s Death in Rome and Ōoka Shōhei’s Fires on the Plain, this book is not merely a thematic study, but an analysis of the literary phenomena that appear in those novels where the sense of guilt is controversially subjective, or so collective as to be perceived as universal, as is often the case with war and postwar literature. Di Gennaro goes beyond the analysis of explicit rewritings of the story of Cain, in order to uncover the monomyth through its rhetorical structures and mythical methods. The wasteland with no religion; the lost, abandoned garden; the classical and religiously-corrupted city; and the tropical, cannibalistic island at war are the respective settings of these narratives, where the issue is neither homelessness nor journeying, but, rather, the desperate and futile movement toward self-consciousness, or self-destruction. After the Second World War, much was silenced rather than left unsaid. This study retraces those silent cries over history through the powerful literary marks of myths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before and during World War II many European psychoanalysts found refuge in South America, concentrated in Buenos Aires. Here, together with local professionals, they created a strong, creative and productive psychoanalytic movement that in turn gave birth to theoretical and clinical contributions that transformed psychoanalysis, psychology, medicine and culture in South America. The Pioneers of Psychoanalysis in South America is a collection of those pioneers’ papers, and introduces the reader to a body of ideas and advancements, many of which have had limited and piecemeal exposure within the psychoanalytic community in the rest of the world until now. The editors Nydia Lisman-Pieczanski and Alberto Pieczanski present original papers and essays, many of which have never before been published in English; those that have been translated were rarely presented in context. Each one of the chapters is accompanied by a scholarly introduction written by psychoanalysts, many of whom personally knew the pioneers and their oeuvres in depth, tracing the roots of their ideas in the European analytic schools. The Pioneers of Psychoanalysis in South America is divided into six main sections: Psychoanalytic process Psychoanalytic technique Metapsychology Psychoanalysis of children Culture and society Psychosomatic medicine. Nydia Lisman-Pieczanski and Alberto Pieczanski provide a coherent guide to the seminal ideas and practices of the South American psychoanalysts who have made major theoretical and clinical contributions to the advancement of the psychoanalytic discipline. The chapters present the material in a way that is accessible to psychoanalysts from across the globe and will enable them to incorporate the ideas and practices outlined here into their everyday psychoanalytic work. It will also be of interest to psychoanalytic psychotherapists, academics interested in the history and development of psychoanalytic ideas and psychoanalysis, and advanced students. Book excerpt: For fans of David Sedaris, Tina Fey and Caitlin Moran comes the new book from Jenny Lawson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Let's Pretend This Never Happened... In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Jenny Lawson regaled readers with uproarious stories of her bizarre childhood. In her new book, Furiously Happy, she explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. And terrible ideas are what Jenny does best. As Jenny says: "You can't experience pain without also experiencing the baffling and ridiculous moments of being fiercely, unapologetically, intensely and (above all) furiously happy." It's a philosophy that has - quite literally - saved her life. Jenny's first book, Let's Pretend This Never Happened, was ostensibly about family, but deep down it was about celebrating your own weirdness. Furiously Happy is a book about mental illness, but under the surface it's about embracing joy in fantastic and outrageous ways. And who doesn't need a bit more of that?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was interested in money since childhood. I remember we often spoke of it at home. My parents had enjoyed a comfortable position in Europe, but due to the vicissitudes of war, they were forced to seek new life courses. They landed in Argentina, where they started from scratch. My grandfather was a wealthy banker in Vienna and my grandmother, Carolina Goldschmidt (German for gold forging), came from one of the most renowned local families. Her mother had been one of the first patients of the then young and unknown Sigmund Freud. My father, an engineer, met my mother in Prague. During World War II, women held minor roles. My mother used to say, "Men do not like women who are too smart". That sentence, her tenacity and her fighting spirit were essential life lessons for me. The most frequent statement my father used to make was that young people should travel and study. I felt most identified with this recommendation and, at the age of 14, I began to earn my own money teaching English. Handling my economy was synonymous with independence and freedom. Therefore, I practised and passed it on to my children, supporting another parental slogan that read: "If you earn ten, save three". I began my research on the career development of women and men almost three decades ago. In those early studies, my topics of interest were financial intelligence and socialisation in families.
