After losing her first love Tek to federal prison, Misa’s hardships as a single mother didn’t last long. Alex, AKA Philly, swooped in like a true knight in shining armor. As one of the richest drug dealers in North Carolina, Philly made Misa’s every wish come true. From buying her an upscale salon to moving her into a neighborhood amongst doctors and politicians, it seemed that Misa had it all. When she gets the call that Philly was murdered, her life changes seemingly overnight. From learning of Philly’s infidelity to being visited by a ghost from her own past, Misa can’t even grieve in peace. Her best friend of twenty years, Big Tyme, steps up to the plate and is by her side, even if it means neglecting his own girlfriend. No one but him knows that he’s loved Misa for the past twenty years, and he refuses to let her get away, even if it means breaking the heart of the woman that loves him. Misa’s daughter Aaliyah lost her biological father to prison, and then she loses Philly. Aaliyah attempts to numb the pain with bad habits and poor decisions. When Philly’s godson comes to town, Menalique is like Philly reincarnated. Each time he checks Aaliyah about something she’s done, it irritates her until she realizes that he’s handsome, charming and soon to be rich after taking over Philly’s empire. But loving dope boys never worked out for her mother, and Aaliyah is terrified of losing love to the streets. Will love conquer all?

From Philly’s side chick asking for money for an outside baby to a ghost from Misa’s past popping up and staking claim to one of her children, life has been one roller coaster ride. The only thing that gives Misa a slight bit of solace is the affection from her long-time best friend, Big Tyme. With each hug and kiss from him, Misa no longer feels guilty about moving on so quickly after her husband’s death. The love from Big Tyme is much needed, until his scorned ex reveals a secret to Misa that shatters her entire world and breaks what little heart she has left. Losing her father to the feds and her stepfather to the streets, has Aaliyah scared to love a dope boy, but she is drawn to Menalique like a magnet. He is the kind of man that her mother loved for fifteen years, and Aaliyah couldn’t leave him alone if she tried. The only problem is, the drama with him and her ex is getting thick. Aaliyah fears for Menalique’s safety and his freedom every time he leaves the house. No matter how much he reassures her that he’s good, Aaliyah can’t find comfort, but she makes the effort to be happy. All of that effort may be for nothing when the woman that Menalique left behind in Texas, pays him a surprise visit. You don’t want to miss the jaw-dropping drama that this sequel brings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man of faith faces a personal reckoning after working aboard HMS Beagle in this “gripping” historical novel (The Wall Street Journal). Heading off to sea at the age of thirteen, Syms Covington became Charles Darwin’s manservant for seven years, sailing on the historic voyage of the Beagle. Their relationship was an odd one, but it furnished exactly what Darwin needed in order to complete his groundbreaking work, as Covington shot and collected hundreds of specimens which became fodder for The Origin of Species. Now, as Darwin’s groundbreaking book is about to be published, Covington has retired to Australia in poor health—and in a state of moral crisis over his role in undermining the Christian faith that has supported him during his life. As the novel progresses, he looks back on his upbringing in Bedford, England; his coming of age and wholehearted enjoyment of the sensual pleasures available to young sailors; and his unceremonious dismissal by Darwin once the research was complete. “A captivating seafarer’s tale rich in period detail and insight into relations among men,” Mr. Darwin’s Shooter paints a poignant and unforgettable picture of one man forging, then struggling to maintain his faith in an era when it is constantly under attack—from science, from the daily brutality of life during colonial expansion, and from one’s own cold, inexorable logic (Publishers Weekly). “A spectacular tale of 19th-century exploration and the conflict between science and religion, all based on Charles Darwin’s famous voyage of discovery . . . Brilliant.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents--telekinesis and telepathy--who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, "like the roach motel," Kalisha says. "You check in, but you don't check out." In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don't, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from The Institute.

Book excerpt: The Bishop’s Pawn continues renowned New York Times top 5 bestseller Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series with another riveting, history-based thriller. History notes that the ugly feud between J. Edgar Hoover and Martin Luther King, Jr., marked by years of illegal surveillance and the accumulation of secret files, ended on April 4, 1968 when King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. But that may not have been the case. Now, fifty years later, former Justice Department agent, Cotton Malone, must reckon with the truth of what really happened that fateful day in Memphis. It all turns on an incident from eighteen years ago, when Malone, as a young Navy lawyer, is trying hard not to live up to his burgeoning reputation as a maverick. When Stephanie Nelle, a high-level Justice Department lawyer, enlists him to help with an investigation, he jumps at the opportunity. But he soon discovers that two opposing forces—the Justice Department and the FBI—are at war over a rare coin and a cadre of secret files containing explosive revelations about the King assassination, information that could ruin innocent lives and threaten the legacy of the civil rights movement’s greatest martyr. Malone’s decision to see it through to the end--from the raucous bars of Mexico, to the clear waters of the Dry Tortugas, and ultimately into the halls of power within Washington D.C. itself--not only changes his own life, but the course of history. Steve Berry always mines the lost riches of history--in The Bishop's Pawn he imagines a gripping, provocative thriller about an American icon.

Book excerpt: A riveting new work and a fresh take on 1960 and the dramatic 11 months leading up to a deeply relevant election for the ages It’s January 2nd, 1960: the day that Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy declared his candidacy, and with this opening scene, Chris Wallace offers readers a front row seat to history. From the challenge of primary battles in a nation that had never elected a Catholic president, to the intense machinations of the national conventions – where JFK chose Lyndon Johnson as his running mate over the impassioned objections of his brother Bobby – this is a nonfiction political thriller filled with intrigue, cinematic action, and fresh reporting. Like many popular histories, readers will be familiar with the story, but few will know the behind-the-scenes details, told here with gripping effect. Featuring some of history’s most remarkable characters, page-turning action, and vivid details, Countdown 1960 follows a group of extraordinary politicians, civil rights leaders, Hollywood stars, labor bosses, and mobsters during a pivotal year in American history. The election of 1960 ushered in the modern era of presidential politics, with televised debates, private jets, and slick advertising. In fact, television played a massive role. It allowed voters to see the candidates’ appearances. More than 75 million Americans watched one or all four debates. The public turned to television to watch campaign rallies. And on the night of the election, the contest between Kennedy and Nixon was so close that Americans were glued to their televisions long after dawn to see who won. 1960 was a deeply contentious, perilous time for America. It also was a moment our nation survived due to courage, leadership, and patriotism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The History of Art in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty ” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.
