Book Synopsis Relationships Between Sea Surface Temperature and Nutrients in Satellite Detected Oceanic Fronts by : John Woeppel Conrad
Download or read book Relationships Between Sea Surface Temperature and Nutrients in Satellite Detected Oceanic Fronts written by John Woeppel Conrad and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite IR images of the California coast off Point Sur reveal recurrent surface features which appear to be 'thermal discontinuities' associated with aperiodic upwelling events. Some of these have associated 'chemical fronts' and increased biological activity. Satellite IR imagery was used to locate 'discontinuities' and with in situ monitoring the development of three features were studied. Interrelationships between sea surface temperature nutrients and microplanktonic biomass were investigated. Nutrient ratios, satellite imagery, wind stress data and correlations between nutrients and temperature were used to develop an estimate of 'age' within a simplified upwelling 'life cycle' model. The features range in scale from tens to hundreds of kilometers. Two upwelling features exhibited very strong correlations between nutrient and temperature but a third feature had considerable nutrient variability. This suggests a considerable impact from the dynamic and biological processes. The technique of coupling satellite imagery and in situ monitoring was found to be a feasible method to provide real time inferences of the nutrient structure associated with an upwelled thermal feature. Download or read book Upwelling Ecosystems written by R. Boje and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upwelling areas are among the most fertile regions of the ocean. In principle, upwelling is caused by the divergence of the flow in the surface layer of the ocean which arises as a consequence of a particular wind field, the presence of a coastline, or other special conditions. Since deeper oceanic layers are usually enriched wi th nutrients, it is the permanent supply of nutrients which forms the basis for the high producti vi ty of upwelling reg ions. The study of upwelling and its consequences were, for a long time, the task of individual scientists from all disciplines of marine science. Today, it is perhaps the branch of oceanography where interdisciplinary coopera tion has developed best. Becoming aware of the large potential yield of upwelling regions, governments in creased the funds for upwelling research. With research activities developed on a larger scale, interdisciplin ary cooperation became a necessity. On the international level, several symposia documented the rapid development. Three volumes reflect the results of these scientific meetings (Rapp. Proc.-Verb. 159, 1970; Inv. Pesq. 35, 1, 1971; Tethys §.' 1-2, 1974). The present book contains selected papers from the Third Symposium on Upwelling Ecosystems, which was held in Kiel in September 1975. Although the third of a series of meetings, it was the first where the word "ecosystem" stood in the title for a scientific program.
Book Synopsis Desertification by : Michael H. Glantz
Download or read book Desertification written by Michael H. Glantz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Water Conference (in Argentina in March 1977) and the United Nations Conference to Combat Desertification (in Kenya in August 1977) reflect the worldwide attention that recent global food shortages and growing populations have drawn to the destruction of arable and potentially arable land. This collection of articles focuses on a primary form of such destruction: desertification—the creation of desert-like conditions in arid or semiarid regions either by changes in climate patterns or by human mismanagement, or both. The contributors—representing a range of disciplines—examine and evaluate the social, political, economic, environmental, and technical problems related to the causes and effects of desertification.

Book Synopsis Coastal Upwelling Its Sediment Record by : Erwin Suess
Download or read book Coastal Upwelling Its Sediment Record written by Erwin Suess and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATO Advanced Research Institutes are designed to explore unre solved problems. By focusing complementary expertise from various disciplines onto one unifying theme, they approach old problems in new ways. In line with this goal of the NATO Science Committee, and with substantial support from the u.s. Office of Naval Research and the Seabed Assessment Program of the U. S. National Science Founda tion, such a Research Institute on the theme of Coastal Upwelling and Its Sediment Record was held september 1-4, 1981, in Vilamoura, Portugal. The theme implies a modification of uniformitarian thinking in earth science. Expectations were directed not so much towards find ing the key to the past as towards exploring the limits of interpret ing the past based on present upwelling oceanography. Coastal up welling and its imprint on sediments are particularly well-suited for such a scientific inquiry. The oceanic processes and conditions characteristic of upwelling are well understood and are a well packaged representation of ocean science that are familiar to geolo gists, just as the magnitude of bioproduction and sedimentation in upwelling regimes --among other biological and geological processes- have made oceanographers realize that the bottom has a feedback role for their models.
Book Synopsis A Vision of Justice by : Susan Crawford Sullivan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Vision of Justice: Engaging Catholic Social Teaching on the College Campus draws together the insights of social scientists, historians, and theologians in order to introduce readers to central topics in Catholic Social Teaching and to provide concrete examples of how it is being put into action by colleges and college students. The authors bring their disciplinary backgrounds and knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching to the exploration of the issues, making the book suitable for use in a wide range of courses and settings. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help readers to think about issues raised in the essays and to think creatively about Catholic Social Teaching in an ever-changing world. The authors invite readers to join them in engaging contemporary thought and experience in the light of Catholic Social Teaching and the college campus.

Book Synopsis The Bible in Africa by : Gerald West
Download or read book The Bible in Africa written by Gerald West and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the arrival of the Bible in Africa has often been a tale of terror, the Bible has become an African book. This volume explores the many ways in which Africans have made the Bible their own. The essays in this book offer a glimpse of the rich resources that constitute Africa's engagement with the Bible. Among the topics are: the historical development of biblical interpretation in Africa, the relationship between African biblical scholarship and scholarship in the West, African resources for reading the Bible, the history and role of vernacular translation in particular African contexts, the ambiguity of the Bible in Africa, the power of the Bible as text and symbol, and the intersections between class, race, gender, and culture in African biblical interpretation. The book also contains an extensive bibliography of African biblical scholarship. In fact, it is one of the most comprehensive collections of African biblical scholarship available in print.
