Even so, many people were lonely or isolated long before the pandemic. My writing, despite itself, constantly toys with experiences of isolation, be it a physical separation from others, or that sense we get of being alone in a crowd. Loneliness and isolation have been near constant partners in my life, to more or lesser degrees, so the fact I find them showing up in my writing shouldn’t really be a surprise. Noticing thusly as I stare into the mirror, I decided to face isolation and loneliness directly, with a book of short stories orbiting these ideas, examining them from different angles like the facets of a cut diamond. My Crystals of Dead Lakes.

Book excerpt: When Illian, a thirteen year-old boy, is awakened by a chilling dream, he's thrown into the midst of an age-old battle. Now, he must face a monstrous king, dangerous perils, dragons, and evil beasts. All to bring the true king back to power. Though lacking the qualities of a skilled warrior, the true King of Varveria anoints Illian as the "Chosen One" and gives him a stone prophesied to crush the evil king's tyranny. Plain to the ordinary eye, the Stone contains great powers. It's up to Illian and a small band of friends, each with unique gifts, to discover the Stone's true purpose. Will Illian face his fears and destroy the evil king, or will darkness prevail? Travel with Illian to an ancient land layered in truth and mystery, where falcons talk, warriors ride fiery chariots, evil has wings, and one boy with one stone can change everything. Book excerpt: In Lakes: Their Birth, Life, and Death, John Richard Saylor shows us just how deep our connection to these still waters run in a revealing look at lifegiving bodies of water. Think all lakes are the same? Think again. Saylor leads an illuminating tour of the most fascinating lakes around the world. Whether it's Lake Vostok, located more than two miles beneath the surface of Antarctica, whose water was last exposed to the atmosphere perhaps a million years ago; Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, the world's deepest and oldest lake formed by a rift in the earth's crust; or Lake Nyos, the so-called Killer Lake that exploded in 1986, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Along the way we learn all the many forms that lakes take--how they come to be and how they feed and support ecosystems--and what we stand to lose when lakes vanish.

Book excerpt: Courageous, passionate men and women battle for survival of their clans—in the shadow of the great mammoth who speaks with thunder . . . As the massive glaciers fade and the wide seas rise, the warm grasslands of the Americas bring prosperity to the gentle People of the Red World, followers of the Great Ghost Spirit, the White Mammoth. But farther north, where the harsh dry winds howl, another nation, the People of the Watching Star, are enmeshed with legends of an evil shaman and the man-eating monster called the wanawut. Relentlessly they have hunted the mammoth to near extinction. Now, as raiders and ravagers they are coming south to invade the villages of the People of the Red World. The only ones who can prevent the murder of innocents and the final slaughter of the mammoth are a young boy shaman to whom the animals speak, a man whose strength equals his conviction, and a woman who hopes that, beyond violence and cruelty, humankind will recognize a stronger power—the force of love.

Book excerpt: This book studies how the rhetoric of travel introduces different conceptualizations of space and time in scenarios of war during the last decades of the 19th century, in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. By examining accounts of war and travel in the context of the consolidation of state apparatuses in these countries, Uriarte underlines the essential role that war (in connection to empire and capital) has played in the Latin American process of modernization and state formation. In this book, the analysis of British and Latin American travel narratives proves particularly productive in reading the ways in which national spaces are reconfigured, reimagined, and reappropriated by the state apparatus. War turns out to be a central instrument not just for making possible this logic of appropriation, but also for bringing temporal notions such as modernization and progress to spaces that were described — albeit problematically — as being outside of history. The book argues that wars waged against "deserts" (as Patagonia, the sertão, Paraguay, and the Uruguayan countryside were described and imagined) were in fact means of generating empty spaces, real voids that were the condition for new foundations. The study of travel writing is an essential tool for understanding the transformations of space brought by war, and for analyzing in detail the forms and connotations of movement in connection to violence. Uriarte pays particular attention to the effects that witnessing war had on the traveler’s identity and on the relation that is established with the oikos or point of departure of their own voyage. Written at the intersection of literary analysis, critical geography, political science, and history, this book will be of interest to those studying Latin American literature, Travel Writing, and neocolonialism and Empire writing.

But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent. The Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan’s compulsively readable portrait of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes, blending the epic story of the lakes with an examination of the perils they face and the ways we can restore and preserve them for generations to come.

Book excerpt: Time in early America when the Indian Nations lived undisturbed by European intervention comes alive. A great lake fixes an assortment of native traditions and cultures. Forested hills, open grassy meadows, green river valleys and rocky mountain retreats bound this great body of water. These natural boundaries form the secluded homelands of neighboring tribes that circumvent the perimeter of a large lake. The rite of passage into manhood of a young Indian is followed. The saga of a boy becoming a warrior unfolds in a series of adventurous episodes. The ensuing encounters reveal the variety of spiritual beliefs, living standards and tribal practices among the first nations. The young hero is led upon a journey directed by the foretelling from the spirit world. An assortment of native characters appears to reveal the details of life passing long ago in the wilderness. The fullness of living free in the woods and forests of America is shared. The reader fully participates through transportation into primitive rustic American existence.
