Book excerpt: Crystallography and Mineralogy when fully understood, provide the solid foundation necessary for the comprehension of the other topics in Ordinary and Advanced Level Geology. Unfortunately, many students and teachers see Crystallography and Mineralogy as “challenging topics” which require the assimilation and memorization of a large number of facts. The Fundamentals of Crystallography and Mineralogy solves this challenge by reference to everyday examples of things we see around us and through the Competence Based Approach which takes the learners out of the pages of textbooks or the models and samples displayed in laboratories. The first chapter of the textbook covers Crystallography from the unit cell through the external crystal features to crystallographic axes and crystal classification into systems and classes. The second chapter covers in detail the basic notions of Mineralogy, from the origin of minerals through the physical properties of minerals to the classification of minerals into silicates and non-silicates based on chemical composition. At the end of each chapter, there are a handful of hands-on activities and study questions that will fully equip the learners for the end of course examinations. This textbook is not only suitable for Ordinary and Advanced Level and first year university Geology students and teachers, but also anyone interested in Crystallography and Mineralogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book has been out of print for seven years. The ques tion as to whether a new edition should be produced was answered affirmatively on many counts. I think that the considerations which led me to write this book in 1949 are still valid (see Preface to the First Edition). Moreover, a description of those areas of interest which together comprise the field of Mineralogy seems to be more necessary than ever, because of the rapid advances which have been made. Due to the rapid extension of our knowledge, I did not dare again to treat the whole field by myself. Accordingly, Professor ZEMANN kindly agreed to revise the first part of the book dealing with Crystallography. He made many important corrections. In Part II the basic question arose as to whether the physical-chemical approach to rock forming processes, becoming more and more important, required inclusive treatment of the fundamentals of physical chemistry in the book. I see certain dangers in trying to produce a petrology text which is physical chemically self-sufficient. Thus, I retain the same opinion which prevailed when I wrote the previous edition; namely that the necessary basic knowledge should be acquired in lectures and laboratory classes in physics, chemistry, and physical chemistry, and with the help of standard literature dealing with these subjects. This back ground is, therefore, presumed and fundamentals are only referred to occasionally.

Book excerpt: This lab book is designed to accompany any text for the mineralogy-petrology course. It contains 35 self-contained exercises and is thus valuable for either lab work or self study by the student. Most of the exercises contain extensive background material and worked examples allowing the student to work through the manual without the aid of a lab assistant. So that the lab instructor does not need to design the assignments most of the exercises also contain all the relevant details needed for the exercises. Spirally bound, students may remove assignments to be handed in to course instructors.

Book excerpt: At the dawn of structural crystallography, Walther Friedrich, Paul Knipping and Max von Laue carried out the first experiments and developed the theory of X-ray diffraction. From the early days, when even the simpler inorganic structures filled an entire PhD study, structural crystallography evolved at its own pace and found new partners in chemistry, physics, materials science, biology and other fields of physical sciences. Both morphological and structural crystallography, however, have remained as important instruments in the mineralogist's toolbox until today. Efforts to enhance the existing instrumentation, to improve our understanding of the theory of diffraction, to study nanoparticulate or poorly ordered materials, and to master large, complex structures continue in all fields of physical sciences. Mineralogy can thus use the fruits of this labour and include them in its toolbox.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology, second edition, presents the essentials of both disciplines through an approach accessible to industry professionals, academic researchers, and students alike. This new edition emphasizes the relationship between rocks and minerals, right from the structures created during rock formation through the economics of mineral deposits. While petrology is classified on the lines of geological evolution and rock formation, mineralogy speaks to the physical and chemical properties, uses, and global occurrences for each mineral, emphasizing the need for the growth of human development. The primary goal is for the reader to identify minerals in all respects, including host-rocks, and mineral deposits, with additional knowledge of mineral-exploration, resource, extraction, process, and ultimate use. To help provide a comprehensive analysis across ethical and socio-economic dimensions, a separate chapter describes the hazards associated with minerals, rocks, and mineral industries, and the consequences to humanity along with remedies and case studies. New to the second edition: includes coverage of minerals and petrology in extra-terrestrial environments as well as case studies on the hazards of the mining industry. Addresses the full scope of core concepts of mineralogy and petrology, including crystal structure, formation and grouping of minerals and soils, definition, origin, structure and classification of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Features more than 250 figures, illustrations and color photographs to vividly explore the fundamental principles of mineralogy and petrology Offers a holistic approach to both subjects, beginning with the formation of geologic structures that is followed by the hosting of mineral deposits and the exploration and extraction of lucrative, usable products that improve the health of global economies Includes new content on minerals and petrology in extraterrestrial environments and case studies on hazards in the mining industry
