Book excerpt: Structure, Properties and Preparation of Perovskite-Type Compounds, Volume 5 presents the various methods of preparing powders, single crystals, and thin films of perovskite-type compounds. This book discusses the structure of perovskite-type compounds and their properties. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the structure, properties, and preparation of perovskite-type compounds. This text then examines how X-ray diffraction can be used to determine unit cell data and to orient single crystals. Other chapters consider the effect of nuclear radiation on the properties of ferroelectric materials. This book discusses as well the phase transitions in perovskite-type compounds, which are often associated with a change in ferroelectric properties. The final chapter explores the two techniques in the preparation of the ternary carbides with the perovskite structure, which involves melting the appropriate proportions of the two metals and carbon under argon. This book is a valuable resource for solid-state chemists.

Book excerpt: The goal of the series Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures is to give a critical survey of our present knowledge on a large family of materials which can be described as solids containing molecules which in two dimensions extend to infinity and which are loosely stacked on top of each other to form three dimensional crystals. Of course, the physics and chemistry of these crystals are specific chapters in ordinary solid state science, and many a scientist hunting for new phenomena has in the past been disappointed to find that materials with layered structures are not entirely exotic. Their electron and phonon states are not two dimensional, and the high hopes held by some for spectacular dimensionality effects in superconductivity were shattered. Nevertheless, the structural features and their physical and chemical consequences singularize layered structures sufficiently to make them a fascinating subject of research. This is all the more true since they are met in insulators and semiconductors as well as in normal and superconducting metals. Although for the time being the series is intentionally limited to cover inorganic materials only, the many known organic layered structures may well be the subject of future volumes. Among the noteworthy peculiarities of layered structures, we mention specific growth mechanisms and crystal habits. Polytypism is very common and it is fasci nating indeed to find up to 240 different polytypes in the same chemical substance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Transport Reactions focuses on the processes and reactions involved in the transport of solid or liquid substances to form vapor phase reaction products. The publication first offers information on experimental and theoretical principles and the transport of solid substances and its special applications. Discussions focus on calculation of the transport effect of heterogeneous equilibria for a gas motion between equilibrium spaces; transport effect and the thermodynamic quantities of the transport reaction; separation and purification of substances by means of material transport; and crystalline substances with homogeneous regions. The text then elaborates on the reaction process in the gas phase and chemical transport processes as an aid in preparative chemistry. The manuscript ponders on the use of transport experiments in the determination of thermodynamic values, including determination of quantities transported in the diffusion tube, test of reversibility, and inversion of transport direction. The book is a vital reference for readers interested in chemical transport reactions.

Book excerpt: Multi-component crystalline systems or co-crystals have received tremendous attention from academia and industry alike in the past decade. Applications of co-crystals are varied and are likely to positively impact a wide range of industries dealing with molecular solids. Co-crystallization has been used to improve the properties and performance of materials from pharmaceuticals to energetic materials, as well as for separation of compounds. This book combines co-crystal applications of commercial and practical interest from diverse fields in to a single volume. It also examines effective structural design of co-crystals, and provides insights into practical synthesis and characterization techniques. Providing a useful resource for postgraduate students new to applied co-crystal research and crystal engineering, it will also be of interest to established researchers in academia or industry.

Book excerpt: Ferroelectric mechanism studies were concerned with the optical rotatory power phenomenon and other physial behaviors. Structural studies were made of highly-optical-absorbing organic crystals of the electron-donor electron-acceptor class, to determine whether some crystal-structural basis could be established for their electrical conductivity. The crystal structures of chloranil-pyrene and coronene-I2 were determined work on photoconductivity of these compounds was initiated. The possibility of molecular orientation of the imprisoned molecules in clathrate structures led to an examination of the dielectric behavior of certain clathrates. It was found that (quinol)3. MeOH shows a large dielectric peak in the neighborhood of 60 K. Order-disorder phenomena in ferroelectrics and antiferroelectrics were examined by the use of diffuse x-ray scattering. Interesting results were obtained for (glycine)3.H2SO4 and NaNO2. (Author).
