Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this document applies genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization to the cryptanalysis of a number of cryptosystems. The two nature-inspired optimization algorithms are used in known-text attacks against cryptosystems ranging from simple classical ciphers to modern cryptographic standards. This research outlines the successful application of genetic algorithms to a variety of classical cryptosystems and provides theories as to why these techniques are not effective against modern cryptosystems. A number of mutation operators are implemented and their cryptanalytic effectiveness compared. The security of classical ciphers against genetic algorithms is communicated in terms of key length. Metrics used to gauge effectiveness include the number of decryptions necessary, making it possible to compare genetic algorithms to exhaustive search.
