Book excerpt: 21st-century educators face a new frontier beyond the boundaries of traditional teaching practice and pedagogical praxis. Imagination Creativity Education (ICE) creates fresh opportunities for teachers who are committed to genuine, empowering, experiential learning. In Crushing ICE: Short-on-Theoretical, Long-on-Practical Approaches to Imagination Creativity Education, teachers will discover how to: • take risks and transition with confidence from conventional to imaginative and creative approaches • promote collaborative learning • enrich the efficacy, esteem, and identity of learners • implement learning-centred strategies, activities, and practices informed by diverse theoretical perspectives • advance meaningful inquiry and relational learning that engages learners at a deep level Every day, teachers—confronted with student exceptionalities, multi-age groupings, overemphasis on provincial standardized testing, and intransigent administrative practices and directives—struggle to promote curiosity, imagination, creativity, innovation, creative process, and risk-taking in their classrooms. ICE teaches a practical, alternative approach that recognizes the importance of these constructs within the self as teacher, the other as learner, and all together in a community of learnership. An exposition of ICE, Crushing ICE shows educators how to challenge the status quo enroute to fostering innovative learning in regular courses, visual-arts, performing arts, and educational transitions. This book is an instructional resource text focused on pre-service and in-service teachers for creativity-based education. Crushing ICE is a unique compilation of scholarly yet practical writings by nationally and internationally recognized teachers and teacher educators who present a predominantly pan-Canadian perspective. It can equally serve as a supplementary text or core text in university courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.

Book excerpt: A guide to the analysis and design of compliant offshore structures that highlights a new generation of platforms Offshore Compliant Platforms provides an authoritative guideto the analysis and design of compliant offshore structures and puts the focus on a new generation of platforms such as: triceratops, Buoyant Leg Storage and Regasification platforms. Whilst the authors – noted experts on the topic – include basic information on the conceptual development of conventional platforms, the book presents detailed descriptions of the design and development of new deep-water platforms. The book describes the preliminary design of triceratops in ultra-deep waters and presents a detailed analysis of environmental loads that are inherent in offshore locations such as wave, wind and current. The new methodology for the dynamic analysis of triceratops under ice loads, predominantly in ice-covered regions, is also examined with detailed parametric studies. In addition, the book covers the structural geometry and the various methods of analysis for assessing the performance of any other similar offshore platform under the special loads. A discussion of the fatigue analysis and service life prediction is also included. This important book: • Includes the analysis and design of compliant offshore structures with a focus on a new generation of platforms • Examines the preliminary design of triceratops in ultra-deep waters • Covers an analysis of environmental loads that are inherent in offshore locations such as wave, wind and current • Reviews the structural geometry and various methods of analysis for assessing the performance of any other similar offshore platform under special loads • Discusses fatigue analysis and service life prediction Written for engineers and researchers across engineering including civil, mechanical, structural, offshore, ocean and naval architecture, Offshore Compliant Platforms fills the need for a guide to new offshore platforms that provides an understanding of the behaviour of these structures under different loading conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of geomaterial interfaces recognizes the important influences of the interface behaviour on the performance of interfaces involving cementaceous materials such as concrete and steel, ice-structure interfaces, concrete-rock interfaces and interfaces encountered in soil reinforcement. During the past two decades, the subject of geomaterial interfaces has attracted the concerted attention of scientists and engineers both in geomechanics and applied mechanics. These efforts have been largely due to the observation that the conventional idealizations of the behaviour of interfaces between materials by frictionless contact, bonded contact, Coulomb friction or finite friction tend to omit many interesting and important influences of special relevance to geomaterials. The significant manner in which non-linear effects, dilatancy, contact degradation, hardening and softening, etc., can influence the behaviour of the interface is borne out by experimental evidence. As a result, in many instances, the response of the interface can be the governing criterion in the performance of a geomechanics problem. The primary objective of this volume is to provide a documentation of recent advances in the area of geomaterial interfaces. The volume consists of subject groupings which cover ice-structure, soil-structure and steel-concrete interfaces, mechanics of rock and concrete joints and interfaces in discrete systems.

Book excerpt: Now in its fifth edition, Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering combines thorough coverage of the basic principles of civil engineering hydraulics with wide-ranging treatment of practical, real-world applications. This classic text is carefully structured into two parts to address principles before moving on to more advanced topics. The first part focuses on fundamentals, including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, pipe and open channel flow, wave theory, physical modeling, hydrology, and sediment transport. The second part illustrates the engineering applications of these fundamental principles to pipeline system design; hydraulic structures; and river, canal, and coastal engineering—including up-to-date environmental implications. A chapter on computational hydraulics demonstrates the application of computational simulation techniques to modern design in a variety of contexts. What’s New in This Edition Substantive revisions of the chapters on hydraulic machines, flood hydrology, and computational modeling New material added to the chapters on hydrostatics, principles of fluid flow, behavior of real fluids, open channel flow, pressure surge in pipelines, wave theory, sediment transport, river engineering, and coastal engineering The latest recommendations on climate change predictions, impacts, and adaptation measures Updated references Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Fifth Edition is an essential resource for students and practitioners of civil, environmental, and public health engineering and associated disciplines. It is comprehensive, fully illustrated, and contains many worked examples. Spreadsheets and useful links to other web pages are available on an accompanying website, and a solutions manual is available to lecturers.
