Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of concerns about reduced funding for nuclear energy research and development (R&D) activities and the likely impact this will have on levels of technical innovation and skills in this area, this aim of the study is to identify mechanisms and policies for promoting international collaboration in nuclear education and training. It addresses the question of infrastructure as a whole, and examines the results of an international survey on initiatives launched during recent in order to highlight good practices and promote the integration of nuclear R&D education in an international setting.

Book Synopsis Radiation And Thyroid Cancer by : Anna Karaoglou
Download or read book Radiation And Thyroid Cancer written by Anna Karaoglou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-03-12 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The considerable increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer in children in areas exposed to the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident has drawn attention to the need for a better understanding of the relationship between radiation exposure (especially from the radionuclides of iodine) and the risk of thyroid cancer. An increase in thyroid cancer has been reported both in patients exposed to therapeutic and diagnostic external radiation, and in the population exposed to radiation from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. While there is no evidence of a significant increase of this cancer in patients treated with radioactive iodine, an increase in thyroid cancer incidence was found in the Marshall Islands population after exposure to the fallout from a thermonuclear explosion, and now an increase has been observed in children exposed to the fallout from Chernobyl. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the first international conference on the relationship between radiation and thyroid cancer — a very important area of research. Besides addressing the link between radiation and thyroid cancer, it examines the many factors influencing the interactions between radiation and the thyroid cell.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Energy Today by : OECD Nuclear Energy Agency
Download or read book Nuclear Energy Today written by OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and published by OECD. This book was released on 2003 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As energy demand increases in line with the expansion of the world's leading economies and the growth of developing economies, a key challenge remains of how to provide the energy levels required while protecting our environment and conserving natural resources. Nuclear energy is a complex and controversial technology but also has the potential to provide considerable benefits. This publication explores a range of issues involved in the use of nuclear energy, including safety aspects, whether its use is economically competitive, its role in meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets, how to manage the radioactive waste it generates, whether its use increase the risk of proliferation of nuclear weapons, security of resources, and its potential role in the future.
Book Synopsis Occupational Radiation Protection by : International Atomic Energy Agency

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present Safety Guide provides general guidance on the establishment of an effective radiation protection programme for occupational exposure, appropriate for the sources of radiation likely to be encountered in a range of industries, medical institutions, educational and research establishments and nuclear fuel cycle facilities. The report further provides the necessary guidance to meet the requirements as laid down in Safety Series No. 115, International Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (1996).

Book Synopsis Low Dose Radiation by : Antone L. Brooks
Download or read book Low Dose Radiation written by Antone L. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Scientist Dr. Antone Brooks and his Low Dose Radiation Research Program team redefined the field, applying advances in instrumentation and molecular biology from the Human Genome Project and developing new technologies to examine cellular responses. Their findings were startling. At low doses, biological reactions are unique and often unrelated to those that occur at high doses. The influential linear-no-threshold model--which predicted that damage from acute exposures can be extrapolated linearly to low dose exposures--was flawed. Small doses of radiation can have an adaptive protective effect. "Hit theory," the idea that radiation only affected cells it directly traversed, yielded to "bystander theory," which hypothesizes that cells communicate with each other and a dose to one affects others surrounding it. Low Dose Radiation describes the program's development, the scientists who made it viable, and the fundamental results, highlighting lessons learned during its lifespan.
