Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

Studies in this area were conducted by sociologists as early as the 1920s, yielding moderate corre lational relationships between census tract density and various social and physical pathologies. This work, however, has been heavily criticized because it did not adequately consider confounding social structural factors, such as social class and ethnicity. The research that will be presented in the present volume represents a new generation of crowding investigation. All of the work has been conducted during the 1970s, and a range of methodological strategies have been employed in these studies.

Book excerpt: In the retail business, retailers invest a great deal of time and money to attract more customers into the store; however, a crowded store can cause lasting negative effects. Researchers have noted that when customers infer difficulty in their shopping experience due to crowding condition, they react with negative emotions leading them to unfavorable in-store shopping behavior such as spending less money than planned or leaving the store without making a purchase. Retail designers are capable of controlling the negative effects of perceived crowding through store design to diminish the feelings of being crowded. However, literature with empirical knowledge on the role of design pertaining to crowding in a retail context is limited. The aim of this study is 1) to explore the influence of retail design on consumers' perceived crowding and its impact on behavioral responses, and 2) examine the influence of emotional reactions generated from the crowding condition perceived during the shopping experience. The issue of crowding was explored in this study using virtual reality, a technology capable of simulating realistic, controlled environments with an engaging experience and reactions similar to real environments. I predicted that the negative impact of crowding on customers' subsequence responses to engage in shopping activities can be resolved through the physical configuration of a store. I further hypothesized that the influence of perceived crowding is dominated by the consumers' emotions which, in turn, lead their behavioral responses. To examine these hypotheses, a between-subject experiment was designed and conducted on college students. A virtual stimulus was constructed of a department store with a combination of physical design factors, particularly store layout and ceiling height, under variations of crowding levels. Results of the current study suggest that the type of store layout had a weighty role where approach intentions were greater at stores with grid-based layout than those at the free-form layout stores. The influence of store layout extended to emotions as well where free-form layout was a main contributor in decreasing the subjects' emotions. The results indicate that the height of the ceiling, especially a lower one, is capable of manipulating the negative impact of perceived crowding. The findings suggest that an overcrowded goods setting evoke negative emotional state, which as a result lead to complaining behavior. The findings supported the mediating role of emotions, particularly pleasure and satisfaction, to directly influence the relationship between perceived crowding and approach intentions. This research contributes to multiple literatures with new knowledge about crowding and design factors, provides valuable insights for retail managers and retail designers, and offers suggestions for future research with the application of virtual reality simulation as a valid, nonintrusive method in assessing the effectiveness of designed environments.

Book excerpt: Many decisions are made in social environments in the presence of others, oftentimes when socially crowded, such as in retail stores or offices. Despite the prevalence of crowded environments, our understanding of how consumer decisions are made in these environments is limited, as current decision theories largely ignore influences of the social environment on the way consumers make decisions. This dissertation, examining how crowding changes the way consumers mentally represent objects, explores whether and how consumer decision making is influenced by the crowdedness of the consumption environment by significantly extending the two most popular cognitive decision theories, construal level theory and context effects, to the affective and social realms. Across two essays, I demonstrate that a socially crowded environment leads people to think more concretely (Essay 1) and lowers willingness to pay for a product (Essay 2). Through nine laboratory experiments and one field study, Essay 1 shows that, compared to less-crowded environments, socially crowded environments tend to lead consumers to think in a more concrete manner, categorize objects more narrowly, and favor products with feasible features. It is argued that defense motivation underlies these effects, which were moderated by the composition of crowds (i.e., in- vs. out-group). Essay 2 examines the effect of social density on consumers' willingness to pay. Through five experiments, using both hypothetical scenarios and a real money auction, this research demonstrates that as social density increases, individuals' willingness to pay decreases, and this effect is mediated by the perceived deal proneness of a typical customer.
