Book excerpt: Crowd Surfing With God is a coming of age journey through poems: a story of self-acceptance that discusses growing up with a rare genetic disorder & mental illness, family & being in a multifaith household, pop culture, & the acts of playing & listening to music bringing you closer to yourself & to healing. "Crowd Surfing With God is a book of consistent breaking and re-fixing. I love most how the book pulls at the edges of all of Adrienne Novy's many parts, stepping outside the binaries of love, loss, identity, genre, and all manner of things holy. There is sharp language, and palpable imagery, yes. But what works best about the book is how it grabs a reader by each arm, dragging them into many new directions, where something new and impossibly bright is waiting to be discovered." --Hanif Abdurraqib, author of The Crown Ain't Worth Much and They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us "All of us cry and yet still the next day arrives, whether we like it or not, but it presents itself with an invitation to move forward in life. Strength lives within vulnerability. This book is a prime example of just that. It's inspiring to anyone who has felt like a bit of a misfit, a black sheep, or a burden. It's a gift to be able to share our stories and rise above, so I hope that it is well received and keeps on inspiring others to live through our pain. Those who get to read this can find relation and comfort in the most sincere manner and are lucky to have stumbled upon such an eye opening book. Thank you, Adrienne." --Caitin Stickels, model, actress, and singer featured in Allure, Cosmopolitan, Daily Mail, V Magazine, and more "Throughout this book, Adrienne asks the reader to not only reveal their softness, but revel in it. This book is a dance party, a late night confession, and a victory anthem to belt in the car. It invites us to praise the music that saved us and the people we sing along with. Holy is our survival. Fierce is our living. Let us celebrate what created us by not destroying us, and sing the chorus one more time." --Bianca Phipps, author of White River Happiness

Book excerpt: "Every man who knocks on the door of a brothel is knocking for God." - G. K. Chesterton What if lust for porn is really a search for true passion? In a world where there are 68 million searches for pornography every day and where over 70 percent of Christian men report viewing porn in the last year, it's no surprise that more and more men struggle with an addiction to this false fantasy. Common wisdom says if they just had more willpower or more faith, their fight would be over. Is the answer really that simple? According to the counselor and ministry leader Michael John Cusick, the answer is no--but the big truth may be much more freeing.Backed by scripture, Cusick uses examples from his own life and from his twenty years of counseling experience to show us how the pursuit of empty pleasure is really a search for our heart's deepest desire--and the real key to to resistance is discovering and embracing the joy we truly want. Cusick's insights help readers understand how porn struggles begin, what to do to prevent them, and most importantly, how to overcome the compulsion once it begins. In the end, this powerful book shows us all how the barrier built by porn addiction can become a bridge to abundant life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine Disorder and the Rescue of God is based on the idea that a kenotic approach is essential to a viable theology. It is deeply influenced by the way such an approach influenced the writings of Donald MacKinnon. Part I argues that God forces us to live in a state of uncertainty, even about God’s existence. However compelling the sense of God’s presence may be, religious experience cannot take that uncertainty away. We have to understand what sort of God would want to impose upon us the disorder of uncertainty. Part II explores this further in terms of God’s willingness to give a degree of independence to the created order, while Part III compares the instability of the created order with that of the moral order. By giving human beings freedom, God opens up the possibility of failure, including that of God. The doctrine of the fall expresses the impossibility of giving human beings autonomy without risking disaster. In Parts IV and V the book looks more closely at the nature of this God who embraces risk, suffering, and even failure. Who is the deity behind this divine disorder? The focus from a Christian perspective is upon the risk, suffering, and failure displayed in the life of Christ. Jesus is drawn into something that it is beyond him to fathom—hence the troubled, uncertain character of his own life. But from a kenotic perspective, even a life marked by failure can be the focal point of God’s self-revelation.

How do fans, musicians, and music industry executives define their markets’ boundaries? What happens when musicians cross those boundaries? What can Christian music teach us about commercial popular music? In God Rock, Inc., Andrew Mall considers the aesthetic, commercial, ethical, and social boundaries of Christian popular music, from the late 1960s, when it emerged, through the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic research, historical archives, interviews with music industry executives, and critical analyses of recordings, concerts, and music festival performances, Mall explores the tensions that have shaped this evolving market and frames broader questions about commerce, ethics, resistance, and crossover in music that defines itself as outside the mainstream.

Here are 365 daily meditations that, through their brutal confessionalism, will unearth the stoic in you. 'God Bless the Broken Bones won’t tickle your ears with pleasant words. Instead what you’ll find is a year of one man’s seemingly uncensored thoughts, fears, frustrations, longings, gratitude, and self-exhortations. Raw yet eloquent, William Ferraiolo’s musings reveal the daily challenges to living a life of equanimity and honor, and why there’s no worthier goal. At times this book might offend you. It will certainly challenge you. And if you’re willing, it might change you. I recommend you see for yourself.' Seth J. But Tiffany’s story unfolded quite differently. Weeks after serving on her high school’s homecoming court, while doctors operated to remove the brain tumor that was killing her, Tiffany suffered a paralyzing stroke. In the nick of a scalpel she lost her beauty and most of her physical ability. Returning to high school in a wheelchair, head half-shaved and face distorted, Tiffany vowed to be normal and live the dream. And for a season, she did. But just when the fairytale was within reach, God surprised Tiffany. Wooing her heart, God convinced her that there was something even better in store for her. . . .And He has something better in store for you, too. Read Your Dream. God's Plan. and see how the Lord wants to use the broken pieces of your life for His greater plan for you. Smiling's story will help you see the ways God is writing your own amazing story—designed for His glory and your fulfillment.

But few know the story of his unlikely rise to global superstardom from middle-class India, which is obsessed with academics, or that the very secret of his success is destroying him and no, it isn’t alcohol or drugs. High octane music and the quiet humdrum life of Kolkata brilliantly portrays the inner life of a little boy as he grows up alternately. Can Syd find himself again; can he put his life back together; will he sing again? The God of Sex and Gold and Rock ’n’ Roll, set in Singapore and India, explores what it takes to pursue the dreams we forget when real life hits us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While physical training has some value, training in holy living is useful for everything. It has promise for this life now and the life to come." (1 Timothy 4:8 CEB) Christians crave a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. The spiritual disciplines are historical practices that can guide us in our daily walk, bringing us closer to Christ. The Holy Living series brings a fresh perspective on the spiritual disciplines, enabling us to apply their practices to our current lives. Practicing these spiritual disciplines opens us to God's transforming love. Both the Old and New Testaments call the people of God to love God completely as well as to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Jesus told his followers these were the greatest commandments. What if by "neighbor," Jesus literally meant the precious people who live in your neighborhoods? What if by "neighbor," Jesus meant all of your neighbors, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or any other potentially divisive designation? This book first defines what is meant by the spiritual practice of "neighboring" and then looks at ways we can live into neighboring as a spiritual practice in our own lives and in the lives of our churches and communities. This is one of series of eight books. Each book in this series introduces a spiritual practice, suggests way of living the practice daily, and provides opportunities to grow personally and in a faith community with others who engage with the practice. Each book consists of an introduction and four chapters and includes questions for personal reflection and group discussion. Other disciplines studied: Celebration, Confession, Discernment, Prayer, Simplicity, Study, and Worship.

Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography** Included in President Obama’s 2016 Summer Reading List “Without a doubt, the finest surf book I’ve ever read . . . ” —The New York Times Magazine Barbarian Days is William Finnegan’s memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates, it is something else: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life. Raised in California and Hawaii, Finnegan started surfing as a child. He has chased waves all over the world, wandering for years through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, Africa. A bookish boy, and then an excessively adventurous young man, he went on to become a distinguished writer and war reporter. Barbarian Days takes us deep into unfamiliar worlds, some of them right under our noses—off the coasts of New York and San Francisco. It immerses the reader in the edgy camaraderie of close male friendships forged in challenging waves. Finnegan shares stories of life in a whites-only gang in a tough school in Honolulu. He shows us a world turned upside down for kids and adults alike by the social upheavals of the 1960s. He details the intricacies of famous waves and his own apprenticeships to them. Youthful folly—he drops LSD while riding huge Honolua Bay, on Maui—is served up with rueful humor. As Finnegan’s travels take him ever farther afield, he discovers the picturesque simplicity of a Samoan fishing village, dissects the sexual politics of Tongan interactions with Americans and Japanese, and navigates the Indonesian black market while nearly succumbing to malaria. Throughout, he surfs, carrying readers with him on rides of harrowing, unprecedented lucidity. Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, an intellectual autobiography, a social history, a literary road movie, and an extraordinary exploration of the gradual mastering of an exacting, little-understood art.

Book excerpt: "We live in a world where many live by the “what have you done for me lately?” philosophy. Love, care, and concern is based on what a person has done for them, who that person is, or for what they can get out of a situation. We are self-centered in our love as a society. Against this kind of love comes unconditional love. It is the kind of love that expresses itself to everyone, no matter who they are, no matter what they have done, and expects nothing in return. When Jesus Christ walked the earth as the God/man this was the kind of love he exhibited to others. His death on the cross is God’s ultimate expression of unconditional love. As we live Christian lives, the call is upon us to practice unconditional love just as God does. This generation desperately needs to experience genuine, unselfish, Godly love. In UNCONDITIONAL, the author chronicles his journey seeking to practice unconditional love, sometimes successfully, sometimes struggling. May his journey inspire the reader to be God’s example of His unconditional love.
