Book excerpt: Since the extensive de-regulation of media ownership in the 1980s, media corporations have combined to form giant conglomerates, the arms of which extend across all forms of media, and frequently into non-media enterprises. The trend toward increased conglomeration within these industries is indisputable, but the results of conglomeration on media content are still hotly debated. Many scholars argue that conglomeration leads to changes in content, particularly in the practice of using conglomerate-owned properties to promote other conglomerate-owned properties--an exercise known as cross-promotion. Given the economic and political reach of media conglomerates within contemporary society, understanding the decision-making processes within these institutions is essential. This project seeks to develop a clearer understanding of the logics of media conglomeration, and its fundamental motive of synergy by interrogating the most common evidence of synergistic efforts: cross-promotion. This dissertation offers institutional analysis of media conglomerates and content analysis of specific instances of cross-promotion along with interviews with industry professionals to develop a clearer picture of the logics currently at work within the culture industries. The resulting project demonstrates that these logics are far less simple and totalizing than previously believed, as these are vast and complex industries, populated with thousands of individuals all working toward multiple (and often disparate) goals simultaneously--sometimes economic, sometimes political, sometimes creative, and often a delicate balance of all three. The project highlights the specific strategies used in deploying cross-promotion, and indicates the way media companies balance their commercial and creative imperatives. Deeper knowledge about these industry operations can help scholars better determine whether conglomeration is something to be embraced or feared. Ultimately, the project reveals that although synergy continues to be a prime motivating factor in consolidating media ownership, and although that consolidation does pose a potential threat to the ideal free and open media marketplace, the effects on content are dictated less by corporate command intended to directly maximize the value and thus power of the parent company, and more by what is most advantageous for discrete media texts and producers.

This multilayered and contradictory icon features prominently in public spaces and state institutions. It is anchored in the country's visual history, inspires protest culture, and dominates urban and rural landscapes. The cross recalls Poland's historic struggles for independence and anti-Communist dissent, but it also encapsulates the country's current position in Europe as a self-avowed bulwark of Christianity and a champion of conservative values. It is both a national symbol – defining the boundaries of Polishness in opposition to a changing constellation of the country's Others – and a key object of contestation in the creative arts and political culture. Despite its long history, the cross has never been systematically studied as a political symbol in its capacity to mobilize for action and solidify power structures. Cross Purposes is the first cultural history of the cross in modern Poland, deconstructing this key symbol and exploring how it has been deployed in different political battles.

Book excerpt: Written by the former chairman and managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan, this book sheds new light on key topics in the history of U.S.-Taiwan relations. It fills an important gap in our understanding of how the U.S. government addressed Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait issue from the early 1940s to the present. One theme that runs through these essays is the series of obstacles erected that denied the people of Taiwan a say in shaping their own destiny: Franklin Roosevelt chose to return Taiwan to mainland China for geopolitical reasons; there was little pressure on the Kuomintang to reform its authoritarian rule until Congress got involved in the early 1980s; Chiang Kai-shek spurned American efforts in the 1960s to keep Taiwan in international organizations; and behind the ROC's back, the Nixon, Carter, and Reagan administrations negotiated agreements with the PRC that undermined Taiwan's position. In addition to discussing how the United States reacted to key human rights cases from the 1940s to the 1980s, the author also discusses the Bush and Clinton administrations' efforts to preserve U.S. interests while accommodating new forces in the region. All these episodes have an enduring relevance for the people of Taiwan, and in his conclusion the author discusses where the relationship stands today. The book includes related documents that helped shape the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.

Society of Sisters." ---Robert O'Neil, Professor of Law Emeritus, University of Virginia School of Law "A careful and captivating examination of a dramatic and instructive clash between nationalism and religious pluralism, and of the ancient but ongoing struggle for control over the education of children and the formation of citizens." ---Richard W. Garnett, Professor of Law and Associate Dean, Notre Dame Law School "A well-written, well-researched blend of law, politics, and history." ---Joan DelFattore, Professor of English and Legal Studies, University of Delaware In 1922, the people of Oregon passed legislation requiring all children to attend public schools. For the nativists and progressives who had campaigned for the Oregon School Bill, it marked the first victory in a national campaign to homogenize education---and ultimately the populace. Private schools, both secular and religious, vowed to challenge the law. The Catholic Church, the largest provider of private education in the country and the primary target of the Ku Klux Klan campaign, stepped forward to lead the fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925), the court declared the Oregon School Bill unconstitutional and ruled that parents have the right to determine how their children should be educated. Since then, Pierce has provided a precedent in many cases pitting parents against the state. Paula Abrams is Professor of Constitutional Law at Lewis & Clark Law School.

The story includes a strong Biblical component to support the feasibility of the basically true story of 'Manaen who grew up with Herod' as verified in Acts 13:1. It is the story of a "Palace Peasant". Manaen records his experiences from early childhood, dwelling in the Herodion - the palace of Herod the Great, situated near Bethlehem. He becomes a student of the Rabbinic School attached to Jerusalem's Temple. In then taking on the role of a scribe, Manaen is able to observe at close range the major events surrounding the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the Nazarene. A strong affinity between the writer and his friend, Jesus, is maintained throughout what could be titled "The Fifth Gospel" for the Good News is here presented, through Manaen's memoirs, in a unique way though remaining true to the Scriptural records. Manaen and his princess bride finally choose to become integral members of the Community of Faith. Their pilgrimage provides a panorama of discovery, pathos, joy, intrigue, scholarship, friendship, villainy, love, faith, sorrow, hope and fulfillment.

Book excerpt: Misunderstandings have been examined extensively in studies on cross-cultural (mis)communication which associate them with participants' differing cultural backgrounds and/or linguistic knowledge. Drawing on a large corpus of misunderstandings from cross- and intra-cultural encounters, this book argues that miscommunication does not relate exclusively to participants' background differences or similarities, but that its creation and development are tightly interwoven with the dynamic manner in which social encounters unfold. Against a backdrop of Pragmatics, Conversation Analysis and Goffman's theory of frames and roles, the volume discusses a large number of misunderstandings and shows that they are associated with the constant identity and activity shifts as well as with the turn-by-turn construction of interpretative context in interaction. Besides students and researchers of pragmatics, conversation analysis and sociolinguistics, this book will also appeal to all those interested in the process of making, misinterpreting and clarifying meaning in social interaction.
Book Synopsis Economic Policies at Cross Purposes by : Anne Kruger
Download or read book Economic Policies at Cross Purposes written by Anne Kruger and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As developing countries become increasingly important in the international economy, there is an urgent need to reassess U.S. policies. This book examines the various U.S. international economic policies that affect developing countries and shows that American policies regarding trade, aid, debt, and the multilateral institutions are undertaken largely without coordination and often conflict with each other. Tracing the evolution of foreign aid, Anna Krueger explains that just after World War II American economic policies toward developing countries consisted almost entirely of foreign aid. This approach was highly successful at first, but then the ability of USAID officials to carry out their mandate eroded over time because of political constraints and conflicting objectives of the aid program. She assesses the U.S. role toward the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and argues that the United States could have been far more effective in these institutions. Krueger then addresses trade policy. Although U.S. leadership to obtain an open multilateral trading system was regarded as a policy oriented toward developed countries, the resulting growth of the world trading system permitted rapid growth of developing countries. As developing countries have adopted realistic economic policies that are conducive to economic efficiency and growth, they have become more important trading partners for the United States and other developed countries. Looking at the evolution of U.S. policy toward the heavy debt burdens of developing countries, Krueger explains that U.S. policy has generally been one step behind the realities of the era. Illustrating how trade, aid, and debt policies interact, Krueger examines two cases: The Caribbean Basin Initiative and Korea. She shows that in Korea, for example, highly successful aid policies of the 1950s helped lay the foundations for rapid economic growth, while the success of Korea's exports then led to acrimonious relations over its trade and exchange rate policies. Krueger concludes by calling for a firmer U.S. commitment to an open multilateral trading system, and points to the interdependence between foreign and trade policies.
