They are distributed, dynamic, and self-configurable without infrastructure support. Routing in ad hoc networks is a challenging task because of the MANET dynamic nature. Hence, researchers were focused in designing best-effort distributed and dynamic routing protocols to ensure optimum network operations in an unpredictable wireless environment. Nowadays, there is an increased demand on multimedia applications (stringent delay and reliability requirements), which makes a shift from best-effort services to Quality of Services. Actually, the challenge in wireless ad hoc networks is that neighbor nodes share the same channel and they take part in forwarding packets. Therefore, the total effective channel capacity is not only limited by the raw channel capacity but is also limited by the interactions and interferences among neighboring nodes. Thus, such factors should be taken in consideration in order to offer QoS routing. While, some of the distributed QoS route selection algorithms assume the availability of such information, others propose mechanisms to estimate them. The goals of this thesis are: (i) to analyze the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC mechanism in non-saturation conditions, (ii) to use the analysis in the context of multi-hop ad hoc networks, (iii) to derive theoretical limits for nodes performance in multi-hop ad hoc networks, (iv) to use the multi-hop analysis in QoS route selection. We start the thesis by proposing a discrete-time 3D Markov chain model to analyze the saturation performance of the RTS/CTS access mode. This model integrates the backoff countdown process, retransmission retry limits, and transmission errors into one model. The impact of system parameters (e.g., number of nodes, packet size, retry limits, and BERs) are analyzed. Next, we extend the 3D model to analyze the performance under non-saturation conditions and finite buffer capacity using two different approaches. First, we extend the 3D model into a 4D model to integrate the transmission buffer behavior. Second, we replace the 4D model by an M/G/1/K queueing system model with independent samples from the saturation analysis. The latter model gives similar results as the former but with a reduction in the analysis complexity. Next and by means of the non-saturation analysis, we proposed an approximate mathematical model for multi-hop ad hoc networks. Furthermore, we proposed an iterative mechanism to estimate the throughput in the presence of multiple flows. Finally, we used the multi-hop analysis to propose a QoS route selection algorithm. In this algorithm, we concentrate on the throughput as a QoS parameter. However, the proposed algorithm is valid to be used with other QoS parameters, such as packet delay, packet loss probability, and fairness. Analytical and simulation results show the deficiency of the current route selection algorithm in AODV and at the same time verifies the need for QoS route selection algorithms.

Book excerpt: With the evolution of 802.11-based wireless networks from hotspots to mesh networks, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of wireless users and density of deployments. Consequently, current wireless network face several problems due to interference, uncoordinated medium access, packet processing overheads at each hop and sub-optimal route selection. While radio technologies continue to improve speeds upto hundred megabits per second, the inadequacies of medium access and routing protocols severely impact the overall network capacity and end-user experience. In this thesis, we focus on improving the scalability and packet forwarding efficiency of multihop wireless networks. We introduce a self-organizing hierarchical ad-hoc network design (SOHAN) based on a three-tier hierarchy with dedicated forwarding nodes to address the scalability of existing multihop networks. We focus on realistic system design considerations and develop a Linux-based system prototype including novel protocols for bootstrapping, discovery and topology control to enable hierarchical self-organization. Experimental and simulation-based evaluations indicate a 2.5 times performance improvement over flat network models. We address packet forwarding inefficiencies of existing techniques over multihop networks due to queuing, contention and reprocessing at each hop and propose an interface contained forwarding architecture (ICF) using a combination of cut-through MAC protocol and label-based forwarding to enable "atomic" channel access for downstream transmissions and reduce self-interference. Next, we design a cross layer enabled cut through architecture (CLEAR) that extends the ICF mechanism with novel airtime metric-based route selection to mitigate the interference between flows. We further outline a time-based coordination scheme using soft reservations during route discovery phase to coordinate multihop "burst" transfers amongst flows. This model can be adapted to support differentiated services and provide a"low-latency socket" for real-time traffic over multiple hops. Our work can be the basis for a switched multihop wireless network design that enables conflict-free transfers resulting in efficient utilization of channel capacity and providing a viable alternative to wired network deployments. A substantial contribution of this thesis also includes the design and development of the ORBIT wireless testbed with focus on cross-layer experimental framework to facilitate rapid prototyping of wireless protocols and experimental evaluations at scale.

This work aims to review the present study on the cross-layer paradigm for QoS support in multi-hop wireless networks. Several examples of evolutionary and revolutionary cross-layer approaches are presented in detail. The Cross-Talk architecture represents one of the more aggressive approaches to cross layer improvement. This architecture enables performance related decisions at the global level that can propagate down to the local layer. This architecture fits the Mixed Network modeling developed here at MSU for the iNET project. Organizing the Mixed Networks solutions into the framework of the Cross-Talk Architecture will allow this work to build on the body of research already in place for cross layering.-- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We investigate the problem of designing delay-aware joint flow control, routing, and scheduling policies in general multi-hop networks for maximizing network utilization. We intend to improve end-to-end delay performance of general multi-hop networks at no cost of long term throughput degradation. Since the end-to-end delay performance has a complex dependence on the high-order statistics of cross-layer algorithms, earlier optimization-based design methodologies that optimize the long term network utilization are not immediately well-suited for delay-aware design. This motivates us in this work to develop a novel design framework and alternative methods that take advantage of several unexploited design choices in the routing and the scheduling strategy spaces. In particular, we propose a multi-layer algorithm architecture for multi-purpose joint policy design and operation. We reveal and exploit a crucial characteristic of back-pressure-type controllers that enables us to develop a novel link rate allocation strategy that not only optimizes long-term network utilization, but also yields loop free multi-path routes between each source-destination pair. Moreover, we propose a regulated scheduling strategy, based on a token-based service discipline, for shaping the per-hop delay distribution to obtain highly desirable end-to-end delay performance. We establish that our joint flow control, routing, and scheduling policy achieves loop-free routes and optimal network utilization. Our extensive numerical studies support our theoretical results, and further show that our joint design leads to substantial end-to-end delay performance improvements in multi-hop networks compared to earlier solutions.

Compared with traditional wireless networks, such as cellular networks, short-range wireless networks have the following unique characteristics. (i) Dense deployment: the network devices are often densely deployed to achieve better monitoring of the environment. (ii) Circuit power consumption: due to the short communication distances, the network devices communicate with each other using low transmit power that is comparable to the devices' circuit power consumption. Thus, circuit power consumption is a major contributor to the energy drain of the network devices. (iii) Battery powered: the network devices are usually battery powered and may be deployed in remote areas. Thus, it is difficult or even impossible to replace the energy supplies of many of the network devices in a short-range wireless network. Therefore, maximizing the energy efficiency of short-range wireless networks is of paramount importance. In this dissertation, I explore the cross-layer design principle to improve the energy efficiency of energy constrained short-range wireless networks, while fully considering their unique characteristics as outlined above. In order to maximize energy efficiency, my research focuses on the cross-layer optimization of the physical layer, the data link layer, the multiple access layer, the network layer, and the application layer. In this dissertation, I (i) develop an energy efficient cross-layer design of the physical layer and the data link layer in a typical narrowband system over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and a Rayleigh fading channel, as well as in a typical Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) system over a frequency selective channel; (ii) optimize the energy efficiency of a clustered wireless network by choosing the optimal transmit power, selecting the optimal cluster head, and deciding whether or not to use multi-hop routing within a cluster; and (iii) optimize the energy efficiency of a short-range wireless network with distributed source coding (DSC) and adaptive transmission, as well as with DSC over Gaussian multiple access channels. Compared with existing work in the literature, I make unique contributions in this dissertation in the following aspects. First, the unique characteristics of short-range wireless networks, such as dense deployment and circuit power consumption, are considered in all of my cross-layer optimizations. Second, I focus on achieving a balance between cost and performance during the development of the cross-layer optimization schemes, due to the limited computational capacity of the network devices in short-range wireless networks. Third, throughout this dissertation, I develop universal optimal solutions that are highly parameterized and directly applicable in general scenarios.
