William Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about "those little towns that get on the map -- if they get on at all -- only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote, Oregon; Simplicity, Virginia; New Freedom, Pennsylvania; New Hope, Tennessee; Why, Arizona; Whynot, Mississippi." His adventures, his discoveries, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Leonard is a lucky man. It’s not everyone who gets parents like Jack and Marge. At eighty-seven, Jack is a pathological optimist with an inexhaustible gift of gab. Marge, Jack’s bride of sixty years, though cut from the same rough bolt of Irish immigrant cloth, is his polar opposite–pessimistic and proud of it. What was their son, Mike, thinking when he took a sabbatical from his job with NBC News so he could pile these two world-class originals along with three of his grown kids and a daughter-in-law into a pair of rented RVs and hit the road for a month? Mike was thinking that he wanted to give his parents the ultimate family reunion. And so, one February morning, three generations of Leonards set out on their journey under the dazzling Arizona sky. Thirty minutes later, one of the humongous recreational vehicles has an unplanned meeting with a concrete island at a convenience store. Thus begins the adventure of a lifetime–and an absolute gem of a book. In the course of their humorous, often poignant cross-country tour, from the desert Southwest to the New England coastline, the Leonards reminisce about their loves, their losses, and their rich and heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) lives, while encountering a veritable Greek chorus of roadside characters along the way. The home stretch finds the clan racing back to Chicago, hoping to catch the arrival of the next generation, Jack and Marge’s first great-grandchild. Through it all, Mike pieces together acentury of family lore and lunacy–and discovers surprising sides to his parents that allow him to see them in a whole new light. Mike Leonard has captivated millions of television viewers with his wry and witty feature stories for NBC’s Today. Now he brings that same engaging charm and keen insight to the foibles and passions of his own blessedly unique family. By turns uproariously funny and deeply moving, The Ride of Our Lives delivers a lifetime of laughs, lessons, and priceless memories. This edition’s exclusive DVD features never-before-seen footage from the trip as well as candid family video and photographs.

Book excerpt: The Camper Book will captivate all those who dream of waving good-bye to the rat race from the window of their own moveable home, be it a camper, RV, travel trailer, camper van, or tiny camper. Not just for placid retirees anymore, camper culture has sprung up among simplicity-seeking millennials, retro-loving "glampers," sports and movie stars, aging hippies, contract workers, "road-schoolers," and others. Award-winning journalist Dave Hoekstra hit the road in his own custom camper van, named Bluebird, to explore the history, culture, subcultures, and future of camper life. Traveling and talking his way through US campsites, RV parks, landmarks, and communities, Hoekstra draws out revealing stories from all walks of life—from Americans who are downsizing material goods while upsizing spiritual pursuits to RV enthusiasts such as Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Prine and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon. A modern-day Studs Terkel, Hoekstra provides a delightful mix of oral history, in-depth reporting, and practical information, while photographer Jon Sall's beautiful color photographs illuminate the unique people, places, and rigs that typify camper life.

Book excerpt: Now a major film starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, a novel “like life itself: joyous, painful, moving, tragic, mysterious, and not to be missed” (Booklist, starred review). The Robinas have shared a wonderful life for more than sixty years. Now in their eighties, Ella suffers from cancer and John has Alzheimer's. Yearning for one last adventure, the self-proclaimed “down-on-their-luck geezers” kidnap themselves from the adult children and doctors who seem to run their lives and steal away from their home in suburban Detroit on a forbidden vacation of rediscovery. With Ella as his vigilant copilot, John steers their ’78 Leisure Seeker RV along the forgotten roads of Route 66 toward Disneyland in search of a past they're having a damned hard time remembering. Yet Ella is determined to prove that, when it comes to life, you can go back for seconds—even when everyone says you can't. “Come to the end and you’ll say, Oh my God.” —Elmore Leonard, New York Times bestselling author of Get Shorty “A sweet natured travelogue that’s about the end of the road in more ways than one.” —Bob Morris, author of Assisted Loving “An affecting road novel. . . . Ella’s wise, feisty voice turns what could be a sappy melodrama into an authentic and funny love story.” —Publishers Weekly “Both achingly sad and intensely romantic, this unforgettable story of a last honeymoon hooked me from the first page.” —Marjorie Hart, author of the national bestseller Summer at Tiffany “Zadoorian is true to these geezers. He draws them in their most honest light . . . I hoped for a book that would make me laugh during these tight times, and I was rewarded.” —Los Angeles Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate journey across America, as told by one of its most beloved writers A Penguin Classic In September 1960, John Steinbeck embarked on a journey across America. He felt that he might have lost touch with the country, with its speech, the smell of its grass and trees, its color and quality of light, the pulse of its people. To reassure himself, he set out on a voyage of rediscovery of the American identity, accompanied by a distinguished French poodle named Charley; and riding in a three-quarter-ton pickup truck named Rocinante. His course took him through almost forty states: northward from Long Island to Maine; through the Midwest to Chicago; onward by way of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana (with which he fell in love), and Idaho to Seattle, south to San Francisco and his birthplace, Salinas; eastward through the Mojave, New Mexico, Arizona, to the vast hospitality of Texas, to New Orleans and a shocking drama of desegregation; finally, on the last leg, through Alabama, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey to New York. Travels with Charley in Search of America is an intimate look at one of America's most beloved writers in the later years of his life—a self-portrait of a man who never wrote an explicit autobiography. Written during a time of upheaval and racial tension in the South—which Steinbeck witnessed firsthand—Travels with Charley is a stunning evocation of America on the eve of a tumultuous decade. This Penguin Classics edition includes an introduction by Jay Parini. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: Smart RV Travel Guide For The Lower 48 States List of RV & National Parks, the Cost, the Amenities, What to See and Do in Each State Smart RV travel guide For the Continental 48 states is a three-year compilation of all the RV parks and National parks in each and every state in the continental US. I outlined all the amenities they offer, the actual cost to stay and so much more. We gathered this data from our last three trips across all 48 states. I also included what to see, where to visit and what they are famous for in each of the states. For each state, I created a detail travel plan that covers everything that is worth seeing along with where to stay while visiting that state. There are 48 chapters, each representing one individual state. Each state is divided into three categories. "Suggested RV trips" - this is where I outline what the main attractions are for each of the states including cities, next I name each and every RV parks, the amenities they offer and what the costs are. Finally, I discuss all the state parks in each state and what perks and goodies they offer along with actual costs. By profession, I was in instructional design, where I designed various commercial and industrial training modules and helped create mini-guides which are far from writing an RV travel guide. I am not qualified to write such guides, but after our 3rd around the country trips, my wife made a convincing argument that people like us could truly benefit from such guides which we didn't have when we first started traveling around our great country. It took me little over nine months to gather all the information and start writing. It is a no-fluff guide with no storytelling as I am good at writing fiction, so I didn't even try, I stayed with the facts and information that I know is helpful to everyone that is looking to take a trip around our good ole' USA. My wife and I were lucky enough to be able to retire at age 52. We both share one passion, and that is the beautiful wide open roads and to see this great vast country of ours. We were able to buy us gently used Class A Fleetwood Southwind for a very reasonable price. It is spacious, maybe a little too spacious for just two of us, but we love every bit of it. It drives beautifully, and the interior comfort is almost like a 5-star hotel. We both love living in it. We spend roughly five months out of the year on the road; we take a 2.5 month long trip around the lower half of the country during the spring, then another 2.5-3 month's long trip during late summer to early fall around the upper part of the country. Since we have been to each of the lower 48 states a dozen or so times and tried out various parks and amenities in every state. We have decided to share all our knowledge here with you. Enjoy the freedom of open roads.
