Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lymphatics and Lymph Circulation: Physiology and Pathology is a comprehensive account of the physiology and pathology of lymphatics and lymph circulation, with emphasis on the question of lymph flow as well as the problems of capillary filtration and diffusion in the connective tissue. These intricate processes are explained from a uniform point of view. Comprised of 27 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the origin and architecture of the lymphatic system, paying particular attention to the discovery of lymphatics and lymph circulation; the phylogenesis and ontogenesis of lymphatics; and general and special anatomy of the lymphatic system. The second part explores the general physiology and pathology of the lymphatic system and includes chapters dealing with the role of the connective tissue in lymph formation; absorption into lymph capillaries; filtration and absorption through serous membranes; and lymph flow and composition. The remaining chapters consider the central nervous system and other organs such as the heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas. This monograph will be useful for students, practitioners, and researchers in physiology and pathology.

Book excerpt: Advances in itch research have elucidated differences between itch and pain but have also blurred the distinction between them. There is a long debate about how somatic sensations including touch, pain, itch, and temperature sensitivity are encoded by the nervous system. Research suggests that each sensory modality is processed along a fixed, direc

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaddum's classical monograph was published fifty years ago only as a German translation. The present anniversary edition is its first appearance in its original language. The book will be of particular interest to physiologists, pharmacologists, biochemists and neuroscientists whose research is on topics related to neurotransmission, vascular control, tissue responses to injury, or anaphylaxis. These scientists are likely to know about Gaddum's pioneer work in their own fields, but perhaps not about this monograph, which has long been out of print. They will find it an unrivalled, and fascinating, source of information about the early development of their topics. The introductory chapter, by Sir Henry Dale, is followed by chapters on general research strategies, histamine, acetylcholine, adenosine derivatives, unidentified tissue components acting on smooth muscle, cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission, tissue responses to injury, and anaphylaxis, all as seen by a shrewd and well-informed observer in the middle 1930s. The notes by the present editor, Professor MacIntosh, highlight those topics which are currently of most interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good portion of this book has been devoted to the copper-dependent enzymes, these being the more numerous. The chapter dealing with serum amine oxidases also focuses attention on their catalytic mechanism, as these enzymes have been studied in greater depth. As the presentation of topics whose experimental basis is rapidly developing is likely to stimulate the reader‘s interest, many bibliographic references have been included.Readers could find this book poor, as far as many topics are dealt with in a relatively little space, but we believe it essential to trace the background of our present knowledge in the field of amine oxidases, stressing the future outlook of research on these enzymes, for they are becoming more and more important in general and medical biochemistry.

Book excerpt: In the preface to Part I of this volume, which appeared in 1966, we stated: " ... we had to leave the Antihistaminics for another volume of unpredictable dimensions. In 1924, eight pages inserted in a Chapter on Mutterkorn by Arthur R.Cushing were considered enough, in Vol. II, Part II, pp. 1319-1326 of the Hand buch. Now 922 pages did not suffice to cover all aspects of the subject ... the subject has been expanded in so many directions, that the anti histaminic part had to be excluded from the present volume. Possibly, another thousand pages will be necessary to cover what remains of the subject."* This prediction was fulfilled, and the subject of histamine has grown to such an extent that dealing with the antihistaminics only in Part II would be quite inadequate. It is imperative to include the large number of recent findings on the subject of histamine, namely the splitting of its pharmacologic receptors, and the great variety of new contributions on ,its participation in physiopathologic phenomena, metabolism and interaction with newly found mediators.

It is the allergy, the subject of Mark Jackson’s fascinating chronicle. Jacksoninvestigates how the allergy became the archetypal “disease of civilization,” as it transformed from a fringe malady of the wealthy into one of the greatest medical disorders of the twentieth century. Jackson also examines the social and economic impact of the allergy, as it catalyzed a new health-conscious culture and created the wealth of some of the largest companies in the world today. Whether cats, crabgrass, or cheese is the source of your daily misery, Jackson’s engaging and in-depth account is an invaluable addition to every bookshelf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Mediators in Septic Shock presents a comprehensive, systematic evaluation of the various putative mediators of septic shock through the use of meta-analysis. Experts of individual mediators have objectively evaluated the collective literature using classical Koch-Dale Criteria for causal relationships. A decision tree approach has been used to analyze the existing evidence for each of the four Koch-Dale Criteria for each individual mediator of septic shock. The book provides an integrated perspective that describes how these many mediators interact. It also covers how advances in mathematical modeling of complex realities are applied to the field of septic shock pathogenesis. CRC Handbook of Mediators in Septic Shock will be a useful reference for emergency room and intensive care physicians, trauma specialists, pathophysiologists, physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and others interested in the topic. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries, inflammation has been considered as a disease in itself. This misconception arose from the inability to distinguish between inflammatory changes and the insults which induce them. The understanding of the distinction between the genesis of inflammation and the tissue reactions that follow is attributed to JOHN HUNTER, who, at the end of the 18th century, substantially contributed to the analysis of inflammation in objective terms. Today, however, we are still trying to find explanations for Celsus' Signs in terms of structural and functional changes occurring in the inflamed tissue. There are drugs which modulate these signs but, without a detailed knowledge of the basic physiopathological events, it is impossible to understand their mechanism of action. Notwithstanding, the effects of anti inflammatory drugs provided new knowledge of the relevance of the signs and symptoms to the sequence of biochemical and morphological changes occurring in inflammation. When we accepted the invitation to edit a Handbook on Inflammation and Anti Inflammatory Drugs, we were aware of the magnitude of the task. We knew the impossibility of covering the whole field in detail, especially taking into account the rapid accumulation of experimental knowledge which would, in all likelihood, overtake the process of publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was an agreable, though strenuous task to edit a book with so many distin guished contributors, on a subject to which I have given half of my life. In 1959, when Prof. O. EICHLER invited me to edit a book on "Histamine and Anti histaminics", as a supplement to HEFFTER'S Handbuch, I thought the task could be done in three years. Now, five years are gone and only half is fulfilled. Though, so far as the "Histamine" part of the book is concerned, the initial plan has been followed very closely, we had to leave the Anti-histaminics for another volume of unpredictable dimensions. In 1924, eight pages inserted in a Chapter on M utterkorn, by ARTHUR R. CUSHING were considered enough, in vol. II, Part II, pg. 1319-1326, of the Handbuch. Now, 922 pages did not suffice to cover all the aspects of the subject. Especially in the last few years the subject has expanded in so many directions, that the antihistaminic part had to be excluded from the present volume. Possibly, another thousand pages will be necessary to cover what remains of the subject. In planning the book we made great use of the excellent and classical mono graph by W. FELDBERG and E. SCHILF on Histamin, published by Julius Springer, in 1930.
