This book was released on 1985 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological and functional maturity relationships permit verification of the hypothesis about segregation of natural population of lobster into two stock units associated with north and south sides of the archipelago. Results indicate that length-maturity relationships are homogeneous inside each stock unit but different between the two areas. Lengths attained at 50% physiological maturity are 84 mm and 79 mm on the north and south sides, respectively, and those attained at 50% functional maturity are 85 mm and 79 mm. Actual legal length of 76 mm allows very weak protection to females capable of extruding eggs. We observe that only 9% of the females that have been recruited to the fishery in the previous year, are mature in a sampling area located on the north side, and 17% in another area located on the south side. Commercial landings contain 83% of pre-pubertal, pubertal or adult I females that have not yet extruded eggs, compared with 74% on the south side. The relative scarcity of bigger males after exploitation seems to limit fertilization of females of commercial size. Thus the maximum rate of berried females in natural populations is below 30%; this rate decreases and attains zero at larger sizes instead of stabilizing around theoretical rate of 50%.
Book Synopsis The Biology and Management of Lobsters by : J. Stanley Cobb
Download or read book The Biology and Management of Lobsters written by J. Stanley Cobb and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work presents a summary and review of the current state of lobster biology, ecology, physiology, behavior, and management. It emphasizes the biology of clawed lobsters (Nephropidae) and spiny lobsters (Palinuridae), with attention also given to slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) and coral lobsters (Synaxidae). The first chapter of Volume 1 provides an overview of the general aspects of lobster biology that serves as an introduction for readers of both volumes. Subsequent chapters examine the topics of growth, neurobiology, reproduction, nutrition, pathology, social behavior, and migration patterns. The chapters in Volume II consider the ecology, population dynamics, fishery biology, and aquaculture of spiny and clawed lobsters. The topics selected in both volumes represent areas of current research whose findings have not been previously synthesized into a coherent form.An important feature of these volumes is the emphasis on the interaction between biology and management and culture. Many of the contributors have done research in both applied and basic biology and can articulate both points of view. The interaction between basic and applied research is of fundamental importance in these volumes in which management aspects of the research have been integrated with the basic biology of lobsters. The Biology and Management of Lobsterswill be of interest to crustacean biologists, marine biologists and ecologists, zoologists, physiologists, animal behavior researchers, aquaculturalists, fisheries biologists and managers of fisheries, neurobiologists, pathologists, and food scientists.

Filled with 170 unique high-resolution photo images of native New England marine sea life and lobsters in all stages of life & death. Includes detailed accounts of topwater lobstering procedures and the many things that could go wrong. Also underwater SCUBA diving observations of lobsters, down on the bottom where they live. Dive into the murky New England seawater at night, and look through a divers' mask to see a priceless gift, a lobster. The story of the first ill-fated attempt to transport New England lobsters overland to California in 1873. The year after, it was tried again, a bust! Instructional views of the lobster; boy or girl? What a lobster eats, how he selects a mate, shell disease, epimorphic regeneration of new parts, and everything else they do when we aren't looking. A section on the Florida spiny vs the New England clawed lobster; which tastes better? Photos comparing each, side by side. And a no-nonsense blind taste test conducted on exactly which tastes more "lobstery." Take a stop on Route #1 in Wiscasset Maine at Red's Eats. It tells a story of the best lobster roll around, in the writers' opinion, and photos of the reasons why! The Maine Lobster Festival, an expose of an affair that's everything LOBSTER. Included are photos of the largest lobster cooker in the world, the fair grounds, and a personal story from the 2011 Lobster Festival Cooking Contest. Photos and a story of the winning recipe is included described as, "The best seafood I ever ate" Have you ever wondered if it were possible to setup a lobster aquarium in your own home? Well it is possible, and this book shows you exactly how to do it, from one who's done it for years. Includes his notes, photos, observations, setbacks, and triumphs. You'll also find little known historical facts including insightful details about the 1999 Long Island Sound lobster die-off mortality event. What caused it, and can it happen again? Also a futuristic view of the lobsters in days to come. This book details many interesting personal accounts and encounters with lobsters at the bottom, where they live. A Connecticut Yankee who'd spent over 50 years with New England lobsters in some form or another tells this story. Where they came from 511 million years ago, up until today, and where they might be tomorrow. Lastly, read about Noofie, an 8-pound American lobster from the deep waters of the Canadian Maritimes. He lived with the author for about a year. In that time, he showed the author things that he could never have imagined. You'll read about this incredible story, one that has a surprise ending. One reader's quote: "Wow! I'm not the best with words but after reading your book, this is what comes to mind: Entertaining and fun while being educational and making you reflect on life. Awesome job, Thank you!"
