Book excerpt: The critical success factors for Knowledge Management (KM) within project-based organizations have been rarely explored through a multi-case study research. A majority of the studies have emphasized on the success factors of a single company and not considered all the factors in an integrated way through several cases from various industries. The aim of this paper is to study the critical success factors through a multi-case approach. The grounded theory approach was chosen to segment and analyze the data accordingly. The extracted results gave the critical success factors for KM in project-based organizations. The overall project output represented the appropriateness of the proposed critical success factors which provide guidelines to organizations adopting KM from different perspectives. Several concepts were extracted from the findings and a conceptual framework was formed to show how to adopt and manage KM in project organizations in order to benefit from its advantages. The execution of KM inside project organization requires a detailed and precise alignment of strategies and operational procedures. Therefore, the current study is among the few multiple case studies in KM of project-based organizations which helps the executives to construct comprehensive and efficient plans for yielding better results at lower costs.

Book excerpt: Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify and examine various factors that influence the success or failure of knowledge management (KM) initiatives in project-based companies. Design/methodology/approach - Following a literature review, the study proposes a conceptual model of six factors of potential importance to the success of KM initiatives. The model is then examined through an online survey of project managers and assistant managers from project-based businesses in Finland. Findings - The study finds that a lack of incentives and the absence of an appropriate information system are the most significant barriers to successful KM initiatives in projects. Research limitations/implications - The findings of the study may be restricted in terms of generalisability because of the limited empirical study. Practical implications - Project managers should formulate an attractive incentive package to encourage project members to participate in KM initiatives and to suggest ideas for new KM opportunities. Managers should also ensure that an effective user-friendly information system is in place before introducing KM initiatives. Originality/value - The study proposes a new model of critical success factors for KM initiatives in the context of project-based business.

Intellectual properties are the main resources for survival of organizations in nowadays competitive world; therefore, increasing number of companies are investing on knowledge management (KM) and its implementation. The project-oriented organizations undoubtedly have the same situation. Furthermore, these kinds of organizations also have inherent temporariness, short-term oriented, complexity and non-routine activities which make them special. The separation of project team members after reaching the project goals is the biggest barrier for implementing KM. Therefore, project-oriented organizations have many difficulties in KM implementation and KM management. Using the past researches techniques and ISM methodology, in this paper, researchers have tried to identify and rank the critical implementation factors. Results show that management factor has the most determination and persuasive power among other factors. Consequently, it can be the first critical KM implementation factor in project-oriented organization.

Book excerpt: The rapidly changing business environment and the constant challenges it poses to organizations and businesses makes it imperative to continuously enhance knowledge and skill sets across the organization. Knowledge Management involves several strategies that an organization may use to educate, train, share experiences, document processes and procedures, distribute information, and keep that information up to date. However the success of knowledge management lies in the role played by the organization, the developers and the users themselves. A critical success factor is a performance area of critical importance in achieving consistently high productivity and sustainability. There are at least two broad categories of key success factors that are common to virtually all organizations: business processes and human processes. Both are crucial to building great companies. The focus of this paper is on the human process areas. Compared to the work on explicit knowledge, the management of tacit knowledge is relatively unexplored. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of how some factors are critical for the successful application of Knowledge Management (KM). This paper makes an exploratory study about Knowledge Management in practice at various organizations in Chennai and tries to identify the critical success factors. Based on various literatures review key factors for tacit knowledge management have been identified and the positive impact of tacit knowledge on organizational sustainability is analyzed. A survey was done among 160 stakeholders of various organizations in Chennai and based on their responses a factor analysis was carried out. The outcome of this empirical research provides indications on the leverages for the effective development and management of KM through Critical Success Factors (CSFs). The evaluation confirms the critical success factors, as dependent on both tacit and explicit knowledge sharing and interaction which play a significant role for Knowledge Management to thrive in an organization to enhance its sustainability.

Book excerpt: This book explores whether knowledge management makes a positive contribution to organisational success in financial service institutions. In addressing this aim, the study develops the twin objectives of identifying the critical success factors for knowledge management and then establishing which of these factors have an impact on organisational success. Adopting a mixed methods approach, the key findings of this research are that there is a significant difference in perceptions of organisational success for organisations operating in a knowledge management environment compared with organisations operating in a non-knowledge management environment. Furthermore, this research has also established that the portfolio of factors associated with perceptions of organisational success are different for the two groups of organisations. Thus, this research makes an important contribution to knowledge management theory by developing a unifying framework of critical success factors for knowledge management in financial service institutions. The practical implications of this study mean that managers can focus on the factors that make most impact on perceptions of organisational success

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: very good, University of East London, 96 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Most organisations are aware that in today's highly competitive environment managing effectively their knowledge is the only way to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. One of the primary areas to which knowledge management can be applied is the field of project management. An increasing number of business sectors are adopting a project approach to carry out a range of essential activities where valuable knowledge is gained. Knowledge from projects is an important resource for further projects, because projects solve innovative and interdisciplinary tasks. However, the majority of organisations do not manage the information gained through past projects. Failure to transfer knowledge from past to future projects leads to wasted activity and unnecessary expenses by 'reinventing the wheel'. Therefore, knowledge management is a critical success factor for many projects. The purpose of this Management Report is to approach knowledge management from the perspective of project management. The main objective is to define how knowledge management can be enhanced within a project by analysing suitable tools and relevant theories. The research is based on the high-speed train project XY of the company XXX. This project is an important milestone for XXX to improve its market position in Spain. The knowledge gained through the XY project will be the key factor for the success of the further high-speed train projects. The main finding of the case study highlights that there is a lack of formal knowledge management activities at the project. The project team focuses mainly on personal interaction for transferring knowledge and information technology is not used to its full potential. A hybrid approach to knowledge management for project environments is su

Book excerpt: Purpose: To date, critical success factors for design and implementing knowledge management system in a multi-case study research have not been systematically investigated. Most of existing studies have derived their critical success factors from single company perspectives and have not considered all factors in an integrated way in a multi-case study research. This paper is aimed to bridge this gap. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative case study technique has been used in this paper for data collection to gain insights into the topic being investigated. For that, 'grounded theory' research approach has been selected by which the collected data from real case studies (successful organizations in KM adoption) are categorized and analyzed through specific stages. The extracted concepts can demonstrate critical success factors of knowledge management system within organizations. Findings: The overall results from the real case studies were positive, thus reflecting the appropriateness of the proposed critical success factors. Also 16 concepts and a conceptual framework are the other findings of this research that clarify how to design and implement a knowledge management system in an organization. The conceptual framework presents a road map for success of KM programs in the organizations. Practical implications: The set of critical success factors can act as a list of items for organizations to address when adopting knowledge management. This helps to ensure that the essential issues and factors are covered during design and implementation phase. For academics, it provides a common language for them to discuss and study the factors crucial for the success of knowledge management program in an organization. Originality/value: This study is probably the first to provide an integrated perspective of critical success factors for implementing KM through a multi-case study research. It gives valuable information and guidelines which hopefully will help the leaders to accomplish knowledge management through their organizations in an effective way.
