Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While organisations have become central for thinking and structuring contemporary social action, existing perspectives on what they are and how to deal with them are still rooted in modern ideas about the foundations of society. The chapters in this volume take critical narrative inquiry -- inspired by post-modern or post-human approaches to organisations -- as a broad range of research and development strategies that challenge the dominant perspectives prevalent in the organisational literature. The purpose of the volume is three-fold. Firstly, a critical reading of organisations foregrounding notions of power and ethics is presented. Secondly, a new framework for understanding and analysing organisational action based on critical notions of storytelling and sustainability is unfolded. Thirdly, the framework is deployed through innovative concepts and learning methodologies for leadership, organisational, or community development. The authors engage in philosophical and theoretical reflections on the ways contemporary organisations work. They also present and analyse case studies of power, storytelling and learning in organisations. As a whole the book provides examples of what can be done to make organisations work in more appropriate ways in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The literature on narrative inquiry has been, until now, widely scattered and theoretically incomplete. Clandinin and Connelly have created a major tour de force. This book is lucid, fluid, beautifully argued, and rich in examples. Students will find a wealth of arguments to support their research, and teaching faculty will find everything they need to teach narrative inquiry theory and methods."--Yvonna S. Lincoln, professor, Department of Educational Administration, Texas A&M University Understanding experience as lived and told stories--also known as narrative inquiry--has gained popularity and credence in qualitative research. Unlike more traditional methods, narrative inquiry successfully captures personal and human dimensions that cannot be quantified into dry facts and numerical data. In this definitive guide, Jean Clandinin and Michael Connelly draw from more than twenty years of field experience to show how narrative inquiry can be used in educational and social science research. Tracing the origins of narrative inquiry in the social sciences, they offer new and practical ideas for conducting fieldwork, composing field notes, and conveying research results. Throughout the book, stories and examples reveal a wide range of narrative methods. Engaging and easy to read, Narrative Inquiry is a practical resource from experts who have long pioneered the use of narrative in qualitative research.

This book is a critical tool for educators seeking to refine their teaching practice and author their own development.

Book Synopsis Representation and the Text by : William G. Tierney
Download or read book Representation and the Text written by William G. Tierney and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1997-07-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on authorial representations of contested reality in qualitative research. This book focuses on representations of contested realities in qualitative research. The authors examine two separate, but interrelated, issues: criticisms of how researchers use "voice," and suggestions about how to develop experimental voices that expand the range of narrative strategies. Changing relationships between researchers and respondents dictate alterations in textual representations--from the "view from nowhere" to the view from a particular location, and from the omniscient voice to the polyvocality of communities of individuals. Examples of new representations and textual experiments provide models for how some authors have struggled with voice in their texts, and in so doing, broaden who they and we mean by "us."

Download or read book Narrative Inquiry in Music Education written by Margaret S. Barrett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret S. Barrett and Sandra L. Stauffer We live in a “congenial moment for stories” (Pinnegar & Daynes, 2007, p. 30), a time in which narrative has taken up a place in the “landscape” of inquiry in the social sciences. This renewed interest in storying and stories as both process and product (as eld text and research text) of inquiry may be attributed to various methodological and conceptual “turns,” including the linguistic and cultural, that have taken place in the humanities and social sciences over the past decades. The purpose of this book is to explore the “narrative turn” in music education, to - amine the uses of narrative inquiry for music education, and to cultivate ground for narrative inquiry to seed and ourish alongside other methodological approaches in music education. In a discipline whose early research strength was founded on an alignment with thesocialsciences, particularlythepsychometrictradition, oneofthekeychallenges for those embarking on narrative inquiry in music education is to ensure that its use is more than that of a “musical ornament,” an elaboration on the established themes of psychometric inquiry, those of measurement and certainty. We suggest that narrative inquiry is more than a “turn” (as noun), “a melodic embellishment that is played around a given note” (Encarta World English Dictionary, 2007, n. p. ); it is more than elaborationon a position, the adding of extra notes to make a melody more beautiful or interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the final chapter of this volume, the authors refer to the pedagogical vantage points offered by narrative inquiry, an apt comment that encapsulates the volume s purpose and its spirit. As an increasing number of people throughout the world and from a broad range of disciplines are turning to narrative as a research methodology, this volume is timely in its focus on the learning and teaching of this approach. The contributors to the volume, all narrative scholars themselves, write about the creative and challenging pedagogical activities that they use in order to enable others to learn about and do narrative research. The volume will be of particular interest to those teaching narrative research methodologies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in the social sciences, medical sciences and the humanities. The contributions from Hong Kong, Israel, Europe and North America, all reflect critically on the rich complexities of using and teaching narrative in those contexts and attend closely to the diverse constituencies of their learning communities."
