Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incident response is a key component in safeguarding the integrity and security of the nation's critical infrastructures. Critical infrastructures are crucial components in maintaining the prosperity and security that this nation provides its citizens. The growing reliance on technology, in conjunction with the increasing interdependency of each infrastructure on one another, requires the ability to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of various types of incidents. Any disruption to one or more of these critical infrastructures can have a devastating effect on the security and economic stability of this nation. Current incident response plans have been put to the test by various naturally occurring events that have underlined both the strengths and the weaknesses of existing response frameworks. The research findings indicate that some of the same vulnerabilities may exist in newly developed response frameworks targeting cyber incidents. Evidence also indicates that these infrastructures will face a new vulnerability. The increase reliance on technology has now unlocked new weaknesses, primarily the vulnerability to a cyber-attack. Continued evaluation and training of key entities and personnel in cyber response tactics is a necessary step to ensuring the effectiveness of these response frameworks. The research findings suggest that a more proactive approach to cyber incident response is required to sustain an effective response capability equivalent to the rapid innovations in technology. Partnerships among all entities involved in a response need to be strengthened and continually amended to ensure the preparedness of all response personnel in protecting the security of this nation's critical infrastructures.

Book excerpt: Sometimes, I hate being right. Not all the time mind you. Just sometimes. There are things that you know you shouldn’t get into, and you do anyway, and it turns out bad. That’s what I am going to tell you about today. Why? Because for some reason they wanted an official report, and well, I don’t do official reports much. So, this is the best you get. Here we go then, into a story about bad choices, guns, travel, and stuff that I still can’t believe happened honestly. I was there, and I still don’t buy some of it myself. It’s still going in the report because it is what I saw, and somehow, it happened. Sometimes being bored is not so bad. Stephanie Macintyre's world is about to change. one minute she's doing her doldrum PI job, the next she gets the phone call that changes everything. First, there's the dead body, the missing scientist, and the mysterious machine. Then, she's getting shot at, infiltrating a multinational corporation's headquarters, and entering new dimensions. Yes, really. She's in over her head, and she knows it. Help comes in the form of a hyperactive hacker and her misfit group of friends. Before they know what they've really gotten themselves into, they're neck deep in trying to stop a madman from carrying out his apocalyptic terrorist plot, running across the country, and driving straight into a danger they could never have conceived. Though the story contains depictions of characters of various talents, abilities, gender identities, and sexualities, what we learn is that good people protect the innocent and evil people create evil. Can the group stop the plot? Its a roller coaster ride with a bumpy stop, but the ride will be worth it and leave you craving more.

Book excerpt: Critical infrastructure sectors are those whose assets, systems, and networks, whether physical or virtual, are deemed so important to nations that their incapacitation or destruction would have a crippling effect on national security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of these. Each country might define their unique critical infrastructure. In this book, we compiled nine critical infrastructure sectors: Emergency Services, Energy, Finance, Food, Government, Health, Telecommunications, Transport, and Water. The continuity of services in these sectors is vital for the daily lives of societies and economies. This study introduces 49 case studies from various parts of the world. This book investigates Cyber Resilience in Critical Infrastructure by paying attention to recommending a national-level cyber resilience framework for all nations to use. Furthermore, we present sectoral analysis and case studies for each infrastructure by going through an in-depth analysis. As military tensions grow in many parts of the world, nations are alarmed and focused on their national cyber resilience, especially the reliability of their critical infrastructure. We believe this book will be a popular reference and guidebook for a wide range of readers worldwide, from governments to policymakers, from industry to the finance sector, and many others.

Book excerpt: An operational risk management system designed to prepare programs that work in remote environments effectively respond and resolve Critical or Catastrophic Incidents in a sustainable manner.Every organization hopes that they will be able to effectively respond to a critical or catastrophic incident, but hope alone, is not a strategy. Does your administration know what to do when a field staff calls in to report a critical or catastrophic incident? Have you adequately trained your office staff to deal with that phone call? What about the phone calls from the media, or the family, or the attorneys? One of the hard lessons that we have learned over the last 30 years is that while critical or catastrophic incidents are usually begin in the field, it is the administrative response to the incident that most often leads to crisis escalation. When a Critical of Catastrophic incident occurs in a remote environment immediate answers are not always available, yet the primary stakeholders still require answers. The purpose of this system is to assist Adventure based programs rapidly and efficiently respond and resolve Critical or Catastrophic Incidents. Whether you have an existing crisis response plan or none at all, this system is designed so that it can be quickly customized to your needs. Organized into one package is the Organizational Crisis Response Folder that contains a series of forms that outline a comprehensive set of questions that need to be asked during a crisis, the Organizational Crisis Response book that outlines how to integrate the system into your organization, and a CD-ROM containing electronic copies of response forms and documentation that can be modified to your specific needs..

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • “A tour de force . . . a comprehensive and suitably furious guide to the political landscape of American healthcare . . . persuasive, shocking.”—The New York Times America’s Bitter Pill is Steven Brill’s acclaimed book on how the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, was written, how it is being implemented, and, most important, how it is changing—and failing to change—the rampant abuses in the healthcare industry. It’s a fly-on-the-wall account of the titanic fight to pass a 961-page law aimed at fixing America’s largest, most dysfunctional industry. It’s a penetrating chronicle of how the profiteering that Brill first identified in his trailblazing Time magazine cover story continues, despite Obamacare. And it is the first complete, inside account of how President Obama persevered to push through the law, but then failed to deal with the staff incompetence and turf wars that crippled its implementation. But by chance America’s Bitter Pill ends up being much more—because as Brill was completing this book, he had to undergo urgent open-heart surgery. Thus, this also becomes the story of how one patient who thinks he knows everything about healthcare “policy” rethinks it from a hospital gurney—and combines that insight with his brilliant reporting. The result: a surprising new vision of how we can fix American healthcare so that it stops draining the bank accounts of our families and our businesses, and the federal treasury. Praise for America’s Bitter Pill “An energetic, picaresque, narrative explanation of much of what has happened in the last seven years of health policy . . . [Brill] has pulled off something extraordinary.”—The New York Times Book Review “A thunderous indictment of what Brill refers to as the ‘toxicity of our profiteer-dominated healthcare system.’ ”—Los Angeles Times “A sweeping and spirited new book [that] chronicles the surprisingly juicy tale of reform.”—The Daily Beast “One of the most important books of our time.”—Walter Isaacson “Superb . . . Brill has achieved the seemingly impossible—written an exciting book about the American health system.”—The New York Review of Books
