Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors chart a middle course in our war over religion and public education, one that builds on a developing national consensus among educational and religious leaders. While it is not proper for schools to practice religion or proselytize, neither is it permissible to make them religion-free zones. Schools do not take religion seriously, as the authors' review of textbooks and the new national content standards makes clear. In Part One, they outline the civic, constitutional, and educational frameworks that should shape the treatment of religion in the curriculum and classroom. In Part Two, they explore major issues relating to religion in different domains of the curriculum in elementary education and in middle and high school courses in history, civics, economics, literature, and the sciences. They also discuss Bible courses and world religions courses and explore the relationship of religion to moral education and sex education. This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines and describes the orientations of two Religious Education curriculum documents, being used for the development of senior secondary courses in Melbourne Catholic schools. These are the Guidelines for Religious Education for Secondary Students in the Archdiocese of Melbourne (Guidelines) (Catholic Education Office, 1984), and the Religion and Society Study Design (VCE Religion units) (VCAB, 1989), which will be part of the Victorian Certificate of Education from 1991. The study shows that these documents have differing intentions and orientations. A case study of 13 Religious Education coordinators in a range of schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne was undertaken. The study showed that respondents were aware of the two differing orientations, but that generally they did not perceive this to be an important issue, either because they believed that they could develop Education in Faith courses from the VCE Religion units, or because they believed that opportunities for personal reflection and growth already exist within these units, or because they believed that they could provide for faith development in other courses and activities. The study shows that these three courses of action are directly linked to the approach in Religious Education taken by the individual respondent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a number of fundamentally challenging perspectives that have been brought to the fore by the national tests on religious education (RE) in Sweden. It particularly focuses on the content under the heading Ethics. It is common knowledge that many teachers find these parts difficult to handle within RE. Further, ethics is a field that addresses a range of moral and existential issues that are not easily treated. Many of these issues may be said to belong to the philosophical context, in which “eternal questions” are gathered and reflected upon. The first chapters highlight the concepts of ethical competence and critical thinking. In the following chapters the concept of ethical competence is analyzed with regard to teachers’ objectives and to students’ texts, respectively. These chapters pursue a more practice-related approach and highlight specific challenges identified from both teacher and student perspectives. Next, the book raises the issue of global responsibility. What kind of critical issues arise when handling such matters at school? Further, can contemporary moral philosophers contribute to such a discussion? In turn, the book discusses the role of statistical analyses with regard to national tests, while the closing chapters present international perspectives on the book’s main themes and concluding remarks. The book’s critical yet constructive approach to issues regarding assessment in ethics education makes a valuable contribution to an ongoing debate among researchers as well as to the everyday communication on testing in schools and classrooms. As such, it will appeal to scholars in ethics education and researchers in the field of assessment, as well as educators and teachers interested and engaged in the task of testing ethics in school contexts where curricular demands for valid and authoritative evaluation may provide important guidelines, but may also pose challenges of their own.
