Book Synopsis Post-Metropolitan Territories by : Alessandro Balducci
Download or read book Post-Metropolitan Territories written by Alessandro Balducci and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes of multi-scalar regional urbanization are occurring worldwide. Such processes are clearly distinguishable from those of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries due to the shifting concepts of both the city and the metropolis. International literature highlights how what we have historically associated with the idea of cities has long been subjected to consistent reconfiguration, which involves stressing some of the typical features of the idea of "cityness". Post-Metropolitan Territories: Looking for a New Urbanity is the product of a research project funded by the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research (MIUR). It constitutes a thorough overview of a country that is one of Europe's most diverse in terms of regional development and performance: Italy. This book brings together case studies of a number of Italian cities and their hinterlands and looks at new forms of urbanization, exploring themes of sustainability, industrialization, de-industrialization, governance, city planning and quality of life. This volume will be of great interest to academics and students who study regional development, economic geography and urban studies, as well as civil servants and policymakers in the field of spatial planning, urban policy, territorial policies and governance.
Book Synopsis Saracen Tales by : Giuseppe Bonaviri

Book excerpt: Fiction. Short Stories. Translated from the Italian by Barbara De Marco. In SARACEN TALES, Italian-born Giuseppe Bonaviri brings a wild newness to the tale of the life of Jesus. In this succession of stories, Bonaviri explores all manners of the known and unknown, the archetypal, the mythological, the symbolic--the life of Jesus is both his material and his point of departure. Part surrealism, part folklore, readers will be amazed at the originality and creativity with which a long-familiar tale is presented. "Bonaviri is a myth-maker, looking simultaneously to the historical past and to the future, to arrive at the a-historical, at cosmic universality"--Franco Zangrilli. Giuseppe Bonaviri was born in 1924 in Sicily. He began writing when he was ten and continued through high school, college, and in his professional life as a doctor, health official, and cardiologist. His work has been widely translated.
Book Synopsis Sacrifice and Redemption by : S. W. Sykes
Download or read book Sacrifice and Redemption written by S. W. Sykes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays explore the role sacrificial metaphor has to play in theological interpretation of the death of Christ, and ask whether such a metaphor makes sense today. They make clear that the political and psychological connotations of sacrificial language have in modern times given rise to great unease, and examine, in particular, the Catholic tradition of the eucharistic sacrifice, a tradition that was vigorously challenged at the Reformation. Looking at the various controversies from a variety of perspectives, the contributions to the book have a pronounced ecumenical slant, and illuminate sacrifice at the major, formative moments in history, from Old Testament times to contemporary theology.

Book Synopsis Dante and the Victorians by : Alison Milbank
Download or read book Dante and the Victorians written by Alison Milbank and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milbank (English, U. of Cambridge) argues that an understanding of Victorianism's reception of Dante is essential for understanding its notions of history, nationalism, aesthetics, and gender as well as the often strange intersections between any two or more of them. She offers a new genealogy of literature in modern times, substituting a continuous Dantism for the conventional tale of Victorian realism and historicism challenged by modernist symbolism. She also finds Dante to be the first writer to historicize, fictionalize, and humanize the eternal realm, and therefore the route through which history, secularized fiction, and positivist humanism can be traced to a lost transcendent. Download or read book Gusto for Things written by Renata Ago and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a material world—our homes are filled with things, from electronics to curios and hand-me-downs, that disclose as much about us and our aspirations as they do about current trends. But we are not the first: the early modern period was a time of expanding consumption, when objects began to play an important role in defining gender as well as social status. Gusto for Things reconstructs the material lives of seventeenth-century Romans, exploring new ways of thinking about the meaning of things as a historical phenomenon. Through creative use of account books, inventories, wills, and other records, Renata Ago examines early modern attitudes toward possessions, asking what people did with their things, why they wrote about them, and how they passed objects on to their heirs. While some inhabitants of Rome were connoisseurs of the paintings, books, and curiosities that made the city famous, Ago shows that men and women of lesser means also filled their homes with a more modest array of goods. She also discovers the genealogies of certain categories of things—for instance, books went from being classed as luxury goods to a category all their own—and considers what that reveals about the early modern era. An animated investigation into the relationship between people and the things they buy, Gusto for Things paints an illuminating portrait of the meaning of objects in preindustrial Europe.

Book Synopsis Queen Christina of Sweden and her Circle by : Susanna Åkerman
Download or read book Queen Christina of Sweden and her Circle written by Susanna Åkerman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1991-07-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and works of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) have often been obscured behind a haze of Iurid myths and legends. This book looks again at her notorious abdication of 1654, seeing it against the background of her reputation as a "libertine", a heterodox religious thinker. Her subsequent conversion to Catholicism is therefore understood as a consequence of messianic and millenarian expectations during those turbulent years, and her bizarre attempt in 1657 to become the ruler of Naples is revealed to be the political wing of a comprehensive religious and intellectual philosophy.

Book Synopsis Empire Without End by : Kathleen Wren Christian
Download or read book Empire Without End written by Kathleen Wren Christian and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early fifteenth century, when Romans discovered ancient marble sculptures and inscriptions in the ruins, they often melted them into mortar. A hundred years later, however, antique marbles had assumed their familiar role as works of art displayed in private collections. Many of these collections, especially the Vatican Belvedere, are well known to art historians and archaeologists. Yet discussions of antiquities collecting in Rome too often begin with the Belvedere, that is, only after it was a widespread practice. In this important book, the author steps back to examine the "long" fifteenth century, a critical period in the history of antiquities collecting that has received scant attention. Kathleen Wren Christian examines shifts in the response of artists and writers to spectacular archaeological discoveries and the new role of collecting antiquities in the public life of Roman elites.
